Chapter 245Â
Jacob narrowed his eyes, his vigilance deepening.Â

‘No way an ordinary person could make it here,‘ Jacob thought. ‘Her looks are so deceiving. Everyone just gets distracted and forgets she’s actually powered.Â
“So you’re one of those rare space–powered humans, huh? That’s impressive,” Jacob said.Â
Chloe smiled and nodded, skipping the chit–chat. She walked right past him and joined the Blaze Squad.Â
“Alright, everyone, get your stuff together. We’re moving out in five minutes,” she called out.Â
Jaliyah’s expression soured when Chloe brushed off Jacob. She stepped up, pointing right at Chloe, and snapped. “Hey, have you got any manners? Jacob was talking to you, you know.”Â
She crossed her arms and looked Chloe up and down, acting all high and mighty, like she was above everyone else.Â
She continued, “So what if you’re a space–powered human? We’ve got one in our squad, too. Starlight Base is crawling with them. You can find a bunch anywhere. Don’t go thinking you’re some big deal”Â
“Jaliyah,” Jacob cut her off.Â
Jacob offered Chloe a gentle, apologetic smile. “Ms. Linville has been a bit spoiled. Please forgive her.”Â
Jaliyah had never been scolded before. She stomped her foot in anger. “Jacob, why are you apologizing to—”Â
Before she could finish, Jacob gave her a fierce glare and muttered threateningly, “What did you promise me before we left? Don’t stir up trouble.”Â
No one knew how tough their powered humans really were, and they had way more people on their side. The real headache was that space–powered girl right in front of him, and her squad seemed fiercely protective of her.Â
She looked clean and tidy, with bright, clear eyes. Anyone could tell she’d never suffered in the apocalypse.Â
People like her either had a powerful elder backing them up, just like Jaliyah’s family, or they were special themselves, either crazy strong or with some rare ability.Â
Jacob had a squad that had a dozen fifth–level powered humans, but the other side had over a hundred, plus they had some pretty advanced weapons.Â
If things really went south, there was no way he could make sure both Ishaan and Jaliyah got out safely.Â
Jaliyah had just shut up when she felt a sharp pain in her foot. She looked down and nearly lost her mind from frightÂ
There was a palm–sized, bright red mutant beetle, and its antennae pierced her toe. It stuck out a long tongue, slurping up her blood like it was a feast,Â
Whether it was fear or pain, Jaliyah’s face went very pale. She kicked the beetle off and stomped on it with all her mightÂ
But instead of getting squashed as she expected, the beetle lashed out with its antennae, stabbing right through her shoe and leaving a gaping bloody wound in the middle of her foot.Â
“Ah!” Jaliyah was shrieking and flailing, while Chloe and the others just covered their cars.Â
‘Man, what a racket, Chloe thought.Â
Jaliyah barely managed a couple of frantic jumps before her eyes rolled back and she stilly collapsed backward.Â

Jacob moved quickly, but was just a moment too late. He caught her as she fell, but she was already unconscious. He called out behind him, “Doctor, get over here now!”Â
A man in his fifties or sixties rushed over with a medical kit. After a quick examination, he looked worried and unsure what to do.Â
“Don’t just stand there! Hurry up!” Jacob barked.Â
Watching as Jaliyah grew weaker by the second, Jacob grew frantic.Â
The doctor was just as anxious. If Jaliyah died out here because they failed to protect her, the consequences would be unthinkable. No one could shoulder that kind of responsibility.Â
He wiped the cold sweat from his brow. “Jacob, it looks like Jaliyah’s been poisoned. There’s nothing in our database about this toxin, and I don’t have any antidote.”Â
“What now?” Jacob asked, his voice tight with worry.Â
The doctor stammered, “R–Right now, the only thing we can do is try to figure out the toxin from this mutant beetle and make an antidote.”Â
His voice faded, and he knew deep down that by the time they actually made an antidote, it’d be way too late.Â
The doctor looked around, desperate for help. “Ms. Linville is Noah’s fiancée from Ebony Base. Is there any healing- powered human? Please, help us!”Â
“Seriously, is there anyone among you who is a healing–powered human? If you can save her, the Linville family will owe you big time,” Jacob chimed in.Â
Most folks might not know the Linville family, but Noah’s name was everywhere.Â
Too bad healing–powered humans were the rarest powers around. If anyone had one, the base would guard them like treasure. One would never see a healing–powered human just roaming around out here.Â
Chloe pretended not to hear anything. She frowned, staring at the long crack in the ground, watching as red mutant beetles kept crawling out every so often.Â
Some earth–powered humans tried to block the crack, but it was pointless. The red mutant beetles just broke through again and again, no matter what they did.Â
At first, only one or two showed up, then dozens, and soon hundreds started swarming out. More and more kept coming.Â
Chloe’s pupils shrank in alarm.Â
As more beetles emerged, their dark red shells shifted to a bright, blood–red, and their soft, almost see–through rear ends, grown that way from drinking blood, looked even more disturbing.Â
After Jaliyah’s scream, several squads had already surrounded the area. With the mutant beetles launching their attack, nobody had time to watch their backs; everyone just unleashed their abilities in a panicÂ
The red mutant beetles kept erupting from the ground like a geyser. At first, they only targeted people on the surface, so they were still easy enough to handle.Â
Ten minutes in, the nightmare escalated, mutant beetles with wings burst out of the crack, launching a full–on aerial assault against the humans.Â
Each squad pressed back–to–back, forming tight circles, desperately fighting off the swarming beetles.Â
Faces twisted in panic, eyes bloodshot, everyone was on the verge of a mental breakdown.Â

“Where the hell are all these mutant bugs coming from? Why won’t they die?” someone yelled.Â

One powered human, eyes rimmed red with hopelessness, kept unleashing his powers to fight off the mutant beetles while leading his squad away from the fissure in the ground.Â
Soon enough, the whole area was overrun by thousands of mutant beetles. They weren’t all that strong. Most were just the second–level, but their numbers were insane, like an endless tide you could never wipe out.Â
The worst part was their venom. Get bitten, and one wouldn’t die on the spot, but you’d be paralyzed instantly, left totally helpless.Â
Once one couldn’t move, the beetles would pile on, and one would be devoured until not even a scrap of bone remained.Â
Abilities were going off left and right, everyone fighting for their lives, but there was one group that stayed totally chill, like the chaos didn’t even touch them.Â
That was the Blaze Squad, together with the Bluehaven Squad.Â
William and James shot each other bewildered looks, blinking hard, then blinking again, like they just couldn’t believe it. They even rubbed their eyes, wondering if they were seeing things.Â
All of them turned to Chloe, jaws dropped, struggling for a moment before someone finally managed to speak. “We’re not being attacked?”Â
Yeah, the Blaze Squad and Bluehaven Squad were just chilling together, and not a single mutant beetle even tried to mess with them.Â
Instead, any beetle that got shoved their way would freak out and run off, as they’d just bumped into their worst nightmare.Â
The whole scene was split in a bizarre way; one side was utter chaos, while the other was eerily calm.Â
Where Chloe stood, it was so quiet that not a single mutant beetle attacked them.Â
Meanwhile, everywhere else was filled with terrified screams, desperate cries for help, and the sound of people in agony.Â
Beetles packed the air, their wings beating furiously, and supernatural powers were flying everywhere.Â
It was like Chloe and her crew were protected by some kind of invisible shield.Â
