The soldiers of the Bluehaven Squad all wore adorably clueless expressions, weapons poised in their hands, just a hair away from swinging them. 

William glanced at Chloe, his eyes sparkling with excitement. He just knew following Chloe was always the right call. 

He nudged her elbow. “Hey, did you use some kind of powder? What was that stuff? It’s seriously impressive. Can you hook me up with some?” 

As he spoke, William pulled the space–powered guy from the squad over. 

“We came from Bluehaven Base to hunt and scored a bunch of cores. Hand them all over,” William said. 

“Wait, what?” William flicked the space–powered human on the forehead to snap him out of it. 

“Quit spacing out and get moving,” William snapped. 

Then he turned to Chloe, giving her a sly, fawning grin. When the soldiers caught sight of this, their whole worldview practically shattered. 

They all stared, eyes wide in disbelief. Wait, that’s our captain?‘ they thought. 

Their once stern, unsmiling devil captain became such a shameless suck–up. 

The soldiers were tempted to cover their faces; they couldn’t bear to look at this. 

William couldn’t care less what his men thought. He just wanted everyone to survive. 

He leaned in with his big head, grinning so wide that one could barely see his eyes. “Hey, Chloe, we’ve teamed up more than 

a few times now. If you’ve got something good, you know you can share, right?” 

He rubbed his hands together, eyes darting around, and just as he expected, he spotted a bunch of fine white powder scattered all around them. 

He added, “Heh, we’re not freeloaders. How about we trade cores for it? 

‘Oh, and if you’ve got any other strange or special powders, we want some of those too. If we don’t have enough cores, just put it on our tab, we’ll pay you back with the cores we hunt down later.” 

Chloe grinned. She’d come fully prepared. These formulas were originally handed down to her by the village chief. 

She’d upgraded them over time, and now they worked even better than before. They could keep almost all bugs at bay. 

“Sure,” she replied. With a wave, a big box materialized in front of her. “All of this is my latest batch of bug–repelling powder.” 

William was over the moon and lunged for the box, but Chloe slapped his hand away. “Hold your horses! I haven’t even told you what I want yet,” she said. 

William eyed the bug–repelling powder right in front of him, swallowing hard. “Just name it. As long as you’re not asking me to drop dead, I’m game for anything” 

Chloe rolled her eyes. “Any mutagenic herbs or mutant flowers we come across during this mission are mine,” she declared. 

William hissed in surprise. He scratched his ear, like he thought he must ve misheard.

“What did you just say?” he blurted out, his voice going up a notch. 

“You heard me,” Chloe said. She shot him a relaxed, confident look.

William scratched his ear with his pinky, looking genuinely troubled. “Those things are already super rare, and we’re always running low at Bluehaven Base.” 

Mutagenic herbs and mutant flowers were pretty well–known now, but they were so scarce that whenever one showed up, the big bases snatched them up right away. 

Mostly, they were brought back for research purposes. But so far, nobody had figured out anything useful. 

“I’ve got a serum developed from mutant flowers,” Chloe said. “Drink this, and you’ll be immune to any virus. Nothing will be able to infect you.” 

Before William could even react, she kept talking. “You can take it back to Bluehaven Base for analysis. It’ll give your research a huge boost compared to just experimenting with the mutant flowers themselves.” 

“Wait, what?” Frank scrubbed at his ears, worried he’d misheard. He shot upright, his voice quivering. “Am I hearing things, or did you really just say that?” 

William reached out and pulled James, who was still stunned, over. 

“Did you hear what Captain Yates just said?” William asked, his voice trembling. 

“I–I heard her say the liquid in her hand is a newly developed antiviral serum,” James stammered, still in shock. 

William turned to stare at the clear liquid in Chloe’s hand, mumbling to himself in disbelief. “Are you kidding me? Mutant flowers are still just being studied. None of the bases have figured anything out yet, and you guys already-” 

“Stop dragging it out. Do you want it or not?” Chloe pressed. 

Before she even finished, William snatched the glass bottle from her, hugging it to his chest like she might snatch it back any second. 

“Want it? Hell yes!” William shot back. 

Chloe raised an eyebrow. “So, about the deal we just made?” 

William, James, and the other powered humans nodded so hard that it was a wonder their heads didn’t fall off. “Agreed! Totally agreed!” William blurted, his excitement barely contained. 

‘Seriously, we’ve been collecting mutant flowers just to figure out what they’re good for, James thought. Now we’ve actually got something to analyze, only a total idiot would say no to that. 

Chloe glanced at the scuffle nearby and said coolly, “I’m not trying to rip you off. Every time you hand me a mutant lower. you’ll get a piece of whatever I make from it.” 

“Deal!” William blurted out. 

On this side, things were so chill that not even a single mutant beetle bothered to show up, while everywhere else was pure 

chaos. 

“Hey, look! There aren’t any mutant beetles attacking over there! someone yelled out. 

As the powered humans fought off the mutant beetles, they sneaked a look out of the corner of their eyes.

“Damn, they’re just over there shooting the breeze? What’s up with that?” one of them blurted out.

No one cared about anything else right now. The moment they realized that side was safe, everyone’s first instinct was to make a beeline for the Blaze Squad. 

One of the red–haired guys dashed over faster than anyone 

else. 

“Hey there, gorgeous. Long time no see,” a flirty voice called out from overhead. 

Chloe glanced back and recognized Hendrix, the red–haired powered human she’d crossed paths with before. He was from Highland Base. He’d been to Bluehaven Base before, trading oil for food. 

Chloe glanced around, but didn’t see anyone else. She remembered Hendrix always had that sultry woman who never left his side. 

Chloe raised an eyebrow. 

“Why are you flying solo? Where’s your crew? Don’t tell me your whole team bit the dust,” she shot back. 

Chloe fired back with her own brand of sass, not holding back one bit. 

For a moment, worry flashed in Hendrix’s eyes, but he went right back to his usual laid–back swagger. 

“Of course not. We just got separated in the fog,” Hendrix said. 

Before he could finish, the powder zone was already swarming with powered humans. The air was filled with noisy chatter, everyone talking over each other. 

Jaliyah’s brother, Ishaan, somehow managed to squeeze his way over to Chloe’s side, shooting Hendrix a hostile glare. “Who are you?” he asked. 

Hendrix ignored Ishaan completely and shot Chloe a teasing look, raising an eyebrow. “Is this your admirer?” 

“No,” Chloe replied flatly. 

Ishaan looked a bit annoyed, but he let it go and didn’t say anything else. 

Just then, Jacob rushed over, cradling the unconscious Jaliyah in his arms. The look he gave Chloe was full of mixed 

emotions. 

“Miss, are you a healing–powered human?” Jacob asked, his tone more certain than questioning 

“What do you need?” Chloe replied. 

Chloe glanced at Jaliyah in Jacob’s arms. Her face was starting to turn blue, and her breathing was barely hanging on. If she didn’t get help soon, she’d be a goner. 

Ishaan heard that and immediately grabbed Chloe’s arm, saying urgently. “Quick, save her!” 

“No,” Chloe replied. 

Those words made Jacob and the others shoot her a frosty glare. “What did you just say? Ms. Linville is Noah’s fiancée. If you save her, both the Linville family and Ebony Base will owe you a favor”
