Ishaan’s face was full of disbelief.Â

Usually, people would do anything just to get on their good side, but now that they were offering her a favor, she was actually refusing it.Â
“I can’t stand her, so I’m not going to help,” Chloe said, her voice icy.Â
“How can you act like this? Don’t you know saving a life is worth more than anything? Do you even have a heart?” A disheveled woman, covered in dust, angrily accused her.Â
As soon as she spoke up, the powered humans who had just squeezed into the room jumped in, piling on the guilt.Â
“Who would’ve thought someone so gorgeous could be so cold–blooded? You’ve got healing abilities, but you just stand there and let someone die,” one of them scoffed.Â
“You’ve got the antidote right there. Why didn’t you hand it over sooner? Do you even know how many people we’ve lost because of you?” another shouted.Â
Chloe just shrugged. “Not my problem.”Â
The woman’s face twisted with anger. “The apocalypse is already brutal enough. If we don’t help each other, just imagine how much worse it could get.”Â
Chloe laughed, “Help each other, huh? Well, I’m hungry and thirsty right now. Why don’t you be a good person and hand over your backpack to help me out?”Â
The woman immediately hugged her backpack tighter. “This is mine.”Â
Chloe sneered, “How about this, dump out all your supplies and share them with everyone, and I’ll save her. Sound fair?”Â
Everyone was eyeing her backpack like a pack of hungry wolves. They were clearly wondering if they should just snatch it.Â
She took a few steps back, fear written all over her face.Â
Emily curled her lip in disdain. “People never care until the knife’s at their own throat,” she sneered.Â
Jacob was sweating bullets, his eyes pleading with Chloe. “Miss, what will it take for you to save Ms. Linville?” he asked.Â
Chloe flashed a sly smile and held up a finger. “A hundred fourth–level cores, and ten fifth–level cores.”Â
Even Jacob, who’d seen just about everything, let out a low whistle at such an astronomical price. His gaze hardened.Â
“Do you even realize what you’re asking for? Fourth–level mutant beasts are already rare, and fifth–level ones are almost nonexistent. How could anyone possibly have that many cores lying around?” he snapped.Â
Chloe just shrugged. “Then there’s nothing to talk about.”Â
She glanced around. Mutant beetles were circling the edge of the white powder, but none dared to cross it.Â
“That powder only lasts about twenty minutes before it stops working.” Chloe said, sounding casual. But I’ve got plenty more. If anyone needs some, you can trade cores for it”Â
As soon as she said that, the powered humans rushed over. “Can I trade supplies for some?‘ one called out.Â

“What about my armor? Will that work?” another asked.Â
“I’ve got energy ore. Can I swap that for some powder?” a third chimed in.Â
Everyone was clamoring, and in no time, the whole box of powder was emptied.Â
William felt his heart ache. This powder was supposed to be for Chloe’s team, and now it was all gone.Â

“This is yours,” Chloe said, amusement in her voice. Out of thin air, a basket appeared in front of him, filled with thumb- sized glass bottles. Each bottle was packed with white powder.Â
William was over the moon. “Thanks, Captain Yates!”Â
From the side, someone snapped, their tone dripping with resentment. “So, turns out you’re a captain after all.”Â
Jacob looked like he could spit fire as he handed over a package. “Inside are a hundred fourth–level cores and ten fifth–level cores,” he said.Â
Chloe brushed the dust off her clothes and snatched up the package without a hint of politeness.Â
She pulled out a bottle of liquid and unceremoniously forced Jaliyah’s mouth open, ready to pour it in.Â
Jacob jumped in, blocking her way, his voice anxious. “What are you giving her?”Â
“If you don’t trust me, then I won’t bother saving her,” Chloe shot back, her tone icy.Â
Jacob was so furious that he looked like he might hit her.Â
“Enough! Are you letting me save her or not?” Chloe snapped.Â
One of the powered humans next to Jacob spoke up, his voice tight with worry. “Jacob, at this point, we might as well try anything”Â
Jacob looked like he was making a difficult decision. “Fine, but if anything happens to Ms. Linville because of you, you’ll have the Linville family coming after you.”Â
Chloe paused, her hand hovering “Since I’m risking my life to save her, these cores aren’t enough. Add ten more.”Â
What? Why don’t you just rob outright?” Jacob shouted, stomping his foot in frustration, his bloodshot eyes practically popping out of his head.Â
acob thought, I could strangle this woman right now!Â
Chloe blinked, her tone deadpan. I’m literally robbing you, aren’t PÂ
Jacob and the rest of the group all frozeÂ
fis face dark with rage, Jacob pulled out ten more cores and tossed them over Hurry up and save her?Â
He didn’t want to say another word, afraid he’d drop dead from rage.Â
After a few drops of the liquid, Jaliyah started to come back to life, and her face no longer looked so pale and bruised.Â
‘She’s alive! Ms. Linville’s alive!‘ someone shoutedÂ
Over a dozen powered humans in the group were bawling their eyes out, thankful they escaped the punishment.Â

Chapter 247Â
People around started to waver, lost in thought.Â

“Please, can you save my friend? He got bitten, too, but I don’t have enough cores to pay you,” someone pleaded.Â
“Please, save my husband! I’ll give you all my supplies, just help him, please!” a woman begged.Â
Chloe pulled out a basket full of bread. “These can restore some of a powered human’s abilities, plus they heal wounds and detoxify. Two fourth–level cores for one bread, fair trade, no cheating.”Â
Someone piped up with a question. “Seriously? Is this palm–sized bread really that magical? Can it cure the mutant beetle’s poison?”Â
“Yes,” Liana answered quickly.Â
Emily, always sharp, grabbed a palm–sized bread and handed it to someone who’d been poisoned but was still awake. The effect was immediate, like magic.Â
After just one bite, the haze lifted from their mind, and their legs felt steady again.Â
“Damn, the poison’s gone? And my powers are halfway back? Is this bread for real?” the person blurted out.Â
Normally, recharging with cores took ages, but with these breads, one bounced back fast.Â
The Blaze Squad was instantly surrounded by powered humans, while Jacob and his crew, looking pissed off, got pushed to the outskirts. It was clear they were being singled out.Â
Ishaan’s face was stormy. “You just made us cough up a ton of cores, but you only want two from them? Why?”Â
“Because I feel like it,” Chloe shot back, her tone icy.Â
“You’ve really piqued my interest,” Ishaan drawled.Â
Chloe almost choked on her own spit. She rolled her eyes, thinking, ‘Seriously? Has this guy lost his mind?”Â
Someone took a bite of the bread, chewed it into mush, and gently fed it to their unconscious friend with their finger.Â
Others crushed the bread, mixed it with water, and poured it into the mouths of those who’d been poisoned.Â
Before long, most of the people were awake again.Â
The air was heavy with the scent of medicine, and the mutant beetles had no choice but to retreat back into the fissures below.Â
Things finally calmed down for a bit, and everyone could breathe easy.Â
Hendrix was the first to step up, flashing Chloe a cheeky grin. “Thanks for saving me. Honestly, I got nothing to repay you with. Guess the only thing left is to offer myself, huh?”Â
“Ugh, please! Chloe wouldn’t even look at you,” Emily shot back, standing protectively in front of Chloe.Â
