Frankie’s eyes nearly popped out of his head in fury as he hurled his fist at Chloe. “You fucking bitch! You dare mess with me? I’m gonna fucking kill you!”Â
As he shouted, his fist was already swinging toward her gut, with a fierce rush of wind trailing behind.Â
Chloe sneered, just about to make her move, when suddenly the sky twisted and a streak of purple lightning cracked across the heavens. Frankie’s hair shot straight up, his whole body scorched black, and a wisp of white smoke escaped his lips.Â
He hit the ground with a heavy thud, sending up a cloud of dust.Â
Three figures slowly walked over.Â
“Chloe, how about that? Isn’t Noah awesome? He just saved your life, you know,” Hector said, flicking his hair with a playfulÂ
smirk.Â
Chloe rolled her eyes and said coolly, “Mind your own business.”Â
Without those teammates, and with Frankie already poisoned, she could’ve handled him all by herself.Â
“Chloe, come on, that’s pretty ungrateful. Noah just saved your life. Not saying you have to throw yourself at him or anything, but a simple thank you wouldn’t hurt,” Hector teased.Â
Chloe ignored him, gripping her ice sword and ready to finish Frankie off. But in the blink of an eye, he and Rosalie had vanished.Â
That was Frankie’s signature move–teleporting at will. But it drained a massive amount of his abilities, leaving him weak for half a month.Â
In this apocalypse, being left alone and helpless was basically a death sentence.Â
But he had no other choice. Staying here would mean dying on the spot.Â
That was probably why he took Rosalie with him.Â
He needed someone to look after him.Â
Chloe lowered her ice sword, looking genuinely disappointed. “You let my prey get away. So, how are you going to pay meÂ
back?”Â
“What? We just saved your life, okay? Why are you acting like we’re the bad guys here?” Hector protested.Â
Chloe rolled her eyes and turned to leave. “Don’t follow me. You’re not getting the mutagenic herb from me, so don’t even think about it.”Â
When Chloe saw Noah again, she didn’t feel that old disappointment anymore. Now, she could look at him with a clear mind. Men only got in the way when she was ready to draw her sword.Â
Besides, he was already taken–engaged, even. That just made her even less interested.Â
Next time they crossed paths, they’d just be strangers going their separate ways.Â
Hector still wouldn’t give up. “Seriously, no room for negotiation? We’ve got state–of–the–art weapons, loads of supplies, andÂ
But Chloe was already long gone.Â

He shot Noah a playful grin. “Guess your charm doesn’t work on her after all, Noah.”Â

Noah kept staring into the distance, so Hector waved a hand in front of his face. “Snap out of it, man. She’s already out of sight.”Â
Chloe tore through the landscape like a sports car doing a hundred on the highway, fast enough to leave the wind behind.Â
She finally made it out of Riverside before nightfall.Â
The further she went, the more people she ran into.Â
Every gang kept a wary eye on each other.Â
With so many powered humans around, the mutant creatures didn’t dare make a move.Â
Chloe was dressed in a tracksuit, her face smeared with dirt to look like a refugee, blending in with the crowd.Â
She picked up plenty of gossip along the way.Â
“Hey, did you hear? All those teams that came to Riverside before–they’ve all vanished,” someone whispered.Â
A group of people in tattered rags trudged forward, their faces and bodies marked with scrapes and scars, looking absolutely filthy and beaten down.Â
Their hair looked like it hadn’t been washed since the apocalypse started. Greasy clumps stuck together, with tiny bugs crawling all over their scalps.Â
The mix of sweat and grime was enough to make anyone gag.Â
The survivors were pale and sickly, lips cracked and dry, dragging their feet and barely hanging on.Â
Long–term malnutrition had left them barely able to stand.Â
Their shoes were falling apart. Some had toes poking out, others were missing half their soles. They looked every bit the refugees.Â
They were swapping stories about what went down in Riverside.Â
“You heard about it too? When I came through, I saw a bunch of bones by the side of the road. Man, it freaked me out,” one of them said.Â
Someone nearby couldn’t help but laugh.Â
“Bones? Please. If I saw those, I’d break them up and make soup out of them,‘ he scoffedÂ
Everyone went quiet.Â
Eating human flesh was something everyone here had done.Â
After a long silence, a burly woman finally spoke upÂ
“Rumor has it there’s treasure in Lakeside. Is that true? Think we could score some food if we go there?” she asked.Â
“Yeah, right. Lakeside’s been turned upside down. Word is, all those top–tier mutant beasts in Riverside actually came from there, someone scoffed.Â
“Man, surviving these days is just way too hard, someone sighed.Â
Chloe was really into the gossip when someone bumped her arm.Â

“Hey, kid, you one of the scavengers who came along too?” the guy asked.Â
These survivors had come from all over, thrown together into a ragtag crew.Â
Anyone who’d made it this far probably had some kind of power, but none of them were exactly top–tier.Â
At best, they were just scavengers.Â
Basically, they picked up the scraps left behind by the powered humans.Â
Chloe nodded vigorously.Â
“With the world this messed up, how about we team up for now?” the guy suggestedÂ
He looked Chloe up and down, a gentle smile on his face.Â
The burly woman beside him jabbed his arm, baring her yellow teeth in a clear look of rejection.Â
“Are you nuts? A little runt like that will just drag us down,” she scoffed.Â

The guy looked annoyed. “More people means more muscle. Who cares? The bigger the group, the better, right?”Â
The burly woman didn’t say anything, which meant she was on board.Â
Chloe just kept walking, silent as ever. Nobody bothered to ask her opinion. She just got lumped in with the scavenger gang by default.Â
Gavin flashed a grin and said, “Hey, I’m Gavin. What about you? What’s your name?”Â
He was on the skinny side, maybe 5’7” tops, with two slightly pointed canine teeth that gave him a playful, boy–next–door vibe.Â
When Chloe didn’t answer, Gavin quietly scooted a bit closer.Â
He lowered his voice and asked, “You’re a girl, aren’t you?”Â
Chloe froze mid–step, her eyes cold and practically radiating killer intent.Â
Gavin quickly tried to calm her down. “Hey, don’t take it the wrong way. I’m not being creepy or anything. I just wanted to give you a heads–up. Even with just your eyes showing, it’s pretty obvious you’re a girl.Â
“Just try not to make eye contact with anyone.”Â
Up ahead, someone called out for the group to take a break, so Chloe just plopped herself down on a random rockÂ
She remained extremely wary of Gavin.Â
In an apocalypse where people ate each other, there’s no such thing as an innocent, cheerful guy like him.Â
If something was out of the ordinary, there was always trouble lurking.Â
Gavin noticed Chloe’s guarded look, but didn’t seem to care. He just sidled over, found a rock nearby, and sat down next toÂ
her.Â
After a while, he broke the silence in a low voice.Â
“Your eyes look just like my sister’s,” he murmured.Â
“She… went missing,” Gavin said, his voice thick with emotion.Â

Just talking about it made his voice tremble. In a world like this, a girl without any powers who disappeared probably didn’t make it.Â
Chloe didn’t say a word.Â
Gavin took a quick look around, then quietly pressed half a piece of bread into her hands.Â
“That’s rye bread. It can recharge your abilities and keep you going. Pretty tasty, too,” he whispered.Â
