Chapter 259Â
Chloe looked at the half palm–sized piece of rye bread in her hand, her lips twitching in disbelief.Â
The edges of the bread were covered in tiny bite marks, as if someone had nibbled at it bit by bit.Â
Gavin saw Chloe staring blankly at the bread, and gave an embarrassed smile.Â

“I ran into a group earlier. They had food and water, so everyone traded their cores for supplies. But I was too weak, only had a single level–three core, so all I could get was this.Â
“Hope you don’t mind,” Gavin said.Â
Chloe pushed the bread back. “I don’t want it.”Â
Gavin’s eyes widened. “This is rare bread! I barely got my hands on it. Why don’t you want it?”Â
Chloe’s head was pounding from all the noise.Â
She asked, “When did you buy the bread? Which way did that group head off to? And when they were selling supplies, didn’t anyone try to rob them?”Â
Everyone was short on supplies now. Selling so openly would just push people over the edge. Those who couldn’t afford it might snap.Â
“Yeah, people definitely tried to rob them.” Gavin realized he was talking too loudly and people were starting to notice, so he quickly covered his mouth and spoke in a hushed tone.Â
He continued, “You have no idea. Yesterday, a real brute led his crew to snatch their supplies, but he got his brains blown out with a single shot.”Â
He glanced around nervously. “Those guys were monsters, especially the one they called vice–captain. He just smashed a guy’s head open with one punch.”Â
Just thinking about it made Gavin shiver all over again.Â
“So what happened after that?” Chloe pressed.Â
He said, “Well, the man said someone tried to rob them, and it really pissed them off, so they decided not to sell anything anymore.”Â
As Gavin spoke, his eyes were locked onto the rye bread in Chloe’s palm. It looked like a dog had chewed on it. He kept gulping, unable to tear his gaze away.Â
But finally, he forced himself to look elsewhere.Â
He thought, “This girl, with eyes so much like my sister’s, must be starving as well.”Â
Gavin offered her the bread, thinking, ‘If my lost sister is out there, I hope someone kind would give her something to eat, just like I’m doing now.’Â
Gavin urged, “Hey, eat it already! Why aren’t you eating? If someone spots it, you’ll lose it for sure.”Â
Chloe ignored his question and shot back, “Do you know which way they went?”Â
Gavin’s eyes popped open. “Wait, you’re not seriously planning to track them down and trade for supplies, are you?”Â
He waved his hands at her, trying to stop her. “Those guys are crazy dangerous! If you go over there, you’ll get yourselfÂ

Chloe’s eyelids twitched, thinking, “What did Frank do this time? Word’s already out about how ruthless Blaze Squad is, and it’s only been a day!Â
She took off her last, nearly empty backpack, reached inside, and actually took out a bottle of mineral water from her spiritual space, though it looked like she was just rummaging in her bag.Â
“Thanks,” she said.Â
But Gavin hurried to block her with his body, like she was about to unleash something terrifying.Â
Through gritted teeth, Gavin hissed, “Are you crazy? Pulling out such precious water in front of everyone? Everyone will be after you.”Â
Chloe handed him the water bottle and bread without a second thought, then stood up to leave.Â
“Hey, kid. Where are you going?” Gavin called out, worried.Â
He followed her, still uneasy.Â
“You should stick with the main group. Otherwise, it’s too risky,” he urged.Â
Just then, chaos erupted in the crowd. A few elderly people and children were being tied up.Â
They stared at the bandits holding them, fear etched in their eyes.Â
“What are you doing? Let us go! Let us go!” voices cried out desperately.Â
The kids‘ sobs got louder. “Don’t kill me! We didn’t do anything, please.”Â
All the while, they were crying as several burly men dragged them around, rough as if they were animals. If anyone fell, they were just hauled across the ground without a care.Â
The scavengers around them either stared with blank, indifferent faces, rubbed their hands together eagerly, or were literally salivating at the scene.Â
It was like they’d seen this happen a thousand times. Not a single person lifted a finger to help.Â
Gavin’s face flushed with rage, his neck thickening and his eyes turning red.Â
“You bastards! Let them go!” Gavin finally exploded, unable to hold it in anymore.Â
But a burly man gave him a brutal kick, sending him sprawling onto the gravel. His legs ended up bruised all over.Â
“You again, always sticking your nose in where it doesn’t belong! Tie him up and throw him in the pot!” one of the bandits shouted.Â
A mix of sorrow and relief crossed Gavin’s face as he closed his eyes heavily.Â
“Just eat me, but please, don’t hurt the kids,” he pleaded.Â
He glanced at the girl who looked so much like his sister. She watched him with interest, as if she were just observing a show.Â
There was no sadness and no joy, just a blank, emotionless stare.Â
Gavin gave a bitter, self–mocking smile. ‘Maybe it’s better this way. If she doesn’t get involved, at least she might make it out alive, he thought.Â

Some of the burly men had already set up a huge pot, and a water–powered human was busy filling it with water. Now all they needed was something to throw in.Â
Gavin was shaking all over, squeezing his eyes shut in terror.Â
Just when he thought his throat was about to be slit and his blood drained, the burly man who had been right in front of him didn’t move for what felt like forever.Â
Gavin cracked one eye open, his mouth dropping in shock.Â
Wait… how did this guy die?‘ Gavin wondered, stunned and confused.Â
The people nearby looked just as puzzled at first, but then their expressions shifted to fear as they pointed toward something in the distance.Â
“Hey, look! Is that a tornado?” a scavenger yelled.Â
A raging tornado suddenly erupted out of nowhere, whipping up clouds of sand and dust all over the place.Â
Everyone bolted in all directions, freaking out.Â
Gavin grabbed Chloe’s hand and bolted, almost tripping as he dragged her along. “Let’s go,” he said.Â
They didn’t look back, just ran and ran until they finally slumped down, gasping for breath, against a big rock in the ruins.Â
“Man, where did that tornado come from? It totally saved my ass,” Gavin panted.Â
Then it hit him. “Wait, did you lose your bread and water back there?”Â
When Gavin saw Chloe take out the bread and water, he finally breathed a sigh of relief.Â
Suddenly, Chloe flashed a grin, showing off a row of sharp white teeth.Â
“You’ve never eaten human flesh?” Chloe asked, sounding almost nonchalant.Â
“Of course not. Wait, don’t tell me you have?” Gavin recoiled, eyes wide in disbelief.Â
For Gavin, not eating human flesh was his absolute bottom line,Â
If this girl had ever eaten human flesh like those people, no matter how much she looked like his sister, Gavin could never forgive her.Â
“No,” Chloe said.Â
She tossed her backpack over. “Take it. It’s yours now.”Â
Since Gavin had held onto his bottom line and never eaten human flesh, Chloe gave him some compressed biscuits and a few bottles of water.Â
“Hey, you were looking for that group selling supplies, right? I can show you where they are,” Chloe offered.Â
Gavin’s voice from behind made Chloe stop in her tracks.Â
He limped after her, and then right before her eyes, he morphed into a big golden dog.Â
Chloe’s mind was blown. ‘What kind of power is this? People can actually shapeshift into animals?‘ she thought, completelyÂ
stunned.Â
Chloe was speechless.Â

“My power? I can shapeshift into a dog. You want to find those people to trade supplies, right? I can track them down by their scent,” Gavin explained.Â

Chloe quickly accepted his mind–blowing ability, though she couldn’t help but twitch her lips a little.Â
“Lead the way,” she said.Â
The huge golden dog, easily 6 feet tall, kept sniffing around as it lumbered ahead.Â
The further they went, the more people they ran into.Â
Everyone kept to their own crew, watching strangers like hawks. Robbery and murder happened so often that nobody even blinked anymore.Â
