Chapter 26Â
The look in the girl’s eyes was pure fear, like she’d been through something horrible. There was something oddly familiar about her, too.Â
In Chloe’s previous life, there had been a powerful spirit–powered human who was small, skinny, and covered in freckles. Her name was Emily Kline.Â
“What’s your name?” Chloe asked before she could stop herself.Â
The girl flinched, then looked up and muttered in terror, “I–I’m Emily Kline.”Â
Chloe’s eyes widened in disbelief. ‘No way. Is this really happening?‘ she wondered.Â
She stared hard at Emily, trying to make sense of it. The tough, spirit–powered Emily from her previous life and this timid, fragile girl seemed like two completely different people. But the name and the freckles were spot–on.Â
Just as Chloe was about to ask more, she felt a sharp, burning gaze on her. It was Gerardo, her homeroom teacher from freshman year.Â
They locked eyes for a moment before Gerardo quickly looked away, sneering as if he’d just seen something revolting.Â
Emily curled into a corner, doing her best to make herself invisible. She sneaked a glance at Chloe, biting her lip, clearly wanting to say something but too scared to speak.Â
Chloe moved toward her, and out of nowhere, she slipped a piece of chocolate into Emily’s hand. “Eat it quickly before anyone notices,” she whispered.Â
Emily stared at her, confused.Â
“What are you looking at? Hurry up and eat. I’ll cover for you,” Chloe urged.Â
Chloe was able to block her from view since Emily was so small and thin. Emily gobbled up the chocolate in a few quick bites, then reached out with her dry, cracked hands and gently tugged at Chloe’s sleeve.Â
“Thank you,” she whispered, her eyes glistening with tears. Chloe was one of the few kind people she’dÂ
met.Â
She glanced around, saw everyone else distracted by gathering snow, and quietly warned Chloe, “Hey, Chloe, be wary of Jason? He’s already harassed a bunch of girls. Watch out, okay?”Â
Chloe glanced down at her, whispering back, “Want me to help you get out of here?”Â
Emily’s eyes lit up for a moment, full of hope, but then the light dimmed. It was dangerous here, but out there, it was even worse. She dared not go out.Â
Maybe everyone was just exhausted from gathering snow all day, but Jason actually kept quiet for once and went to bed early.Â

In the middle of the night, Chloe suddenly felt a cold hand creeping across her face. She shot her eyes open and found herself staring right into Gerardo’s, filled with malice.Â
His voice was low and twisted. “Last time you got away, Chloe. Let’s see you try now.” He grabbed her, pulled her close, and leaned in, about to force a kiss.Â
But then, with a heavy thud, Gerardo’s eyes shut, and snow sprayed everywhere as his head dropped. His lips brushed Chloe’s cheek as he collapsed.Â

Emily stood there, holding a brick, her eyes wide with terror. She was frozen in place, her breath shaky like she might scream any second.Â
Chloe quickly shoved Emily aside and covered her mouth. “Shh, don’t make a sound.”Â
Emily’s warm tears dripped onto Chloe’s hand as she nodded quickly, her lips pressed shut.Â
The two of them looked around, the darkness so thick that they couldn’t see their hands in front of their faces. The only sound was the soft snoring of the others. Thankfully, no one woke up.Â
They crept over to the cafeteria doors, crouching low. The entrance was blocked with tables and chairs, and the back door was sealed, too. Luckily, the windows weren’t sealed, but the only way out was to break the glass.Â
They huddled under the window, and Chloe whispered in Emily’s ear, “When I break the glass, you crawl out first. We’ll run together.”Â
Emily fought back tears, her whole body shaking as she nodded hard.Â
With a loud crash, the glass shattered under the force of the axe.Â
Jason was the first to react, jumping out of his sleeping bag. As soon as he flipped on the lights, Chloe had already helped Emily through the window.Â
“Chloe!” Jason’s eyes burned with rage, and he looked completely different from the calm guy in the day.Â
The others were jolted awake, staring at Chloe in shock.Â
“You’ve got a death wish!” Jason lunged forward, and with a wave of his hand, a wall of earth shot up over the window.Â
At the same time, another guy threw a fireball.Â
But Chloe was too fast. As soon as the earth wall went up, she vanished. The fireball crashed into the wall, blasting a hole through it.Â
“What are you all staring at? Move. Go after them!” Jason shouted.Â
Chloe could’ve outrun them all easily with her wind–powered speed, but with Emily slowing her down, she couldn’t.Â
Still, Emily was going to be a big shot with spirit powers someday. There was no way Chloe was leaving her behind. She dragged Emily along, both of them stumbling and falling as they ran.Â
But the other guys had longer legs. After Emily tripped again, they were quickly surrounded. Flashlights shone right at them, and Emily squeezed her eyes shut, trembling in despair.Â
Clutching the brick, Emily gritted her teeth and charged at Jason, shouting, “Chloe, go. I’ll hold them off. And thanks for the chocolate.”Â
But Chloe grabbed her and pulled her back behind her.Â
Emily stomped her foot, frustrated. “You’re so fast, and I’m just slowing you down.”Â
Before Emily could say another word, a sudden whirlwind kicked up right in front of her. Ice blades spun wildly inside it.Â
Jason quickly stepped back. “You’re a powered human?”Â
“Aren’t you, too?” Chloe retorted.Â
Jason’s sharp look faded. His voice dropped. “So, you’re not just some regular person anymore.”Â
The guy who had thrown the fireball stepped up, too. “Hey, come join our team.”Â
Chloe raised an eyebrow. “You think I’d join some random lame squad?”Â

Suddenly, a sharp blade was thrust right at Chloe’s heart.Â

Everyone stared in shock as a thin layer of ice crystals spread over Chloe, forming a tough armor that couldn’t be broken. The blade hit it with a crisp clang that rang out in the dead of night.Â
“What kind of power is that?” Jason gasped, backing away. His whole body tensed as the cold hit him.Â
“You won’t live long enough to find out,” Chloe snapped. She hurled the whirlwind straight at him.Â
But Jason was a powered human, too. He moved fast, grabbing someone nearby and pulling them in front of him like a shield. The poor guy didn’t even have time to scream. The ice blades shredded him on the spot, pieces flying everywhere.Â
The crowd sucked in a breath, horrified.Â
Jason barked fiercely, “Get her. Tear that bitch apart!”Â
With that, everyone lunged at Chloe.Â
Chloe hadn’t expected there to be four powered humans in the group. She couldn’t take them all on at once. Quickly, she pulled a blood pack from her spiritual space and waved it around. “Let’s all go down together, shall we?”Â
“Shit!” Jason yelled, raising an earth wall to block the blood spray. But his teammates still got covered in it.Â
There was already a dead body in the cafeteria, and with all this new blood, the smell spread fast.Â
The nearby zombies went crazy at the scent, their senses sharper than ever. In the dark, they started to swarm in. The first to show up were the two security guards from the school entrance.Â
