The Day Love Betrayed Me and Never the Plan 260

Chapter 260

After a long and exhausting journey, Chloe finally drew near Lakeside.

If Riverside was a ghost town, then Lakeside was straightup hell.

It wasn’t even a city anymore. It was more like a desolate island, cut off from everything.

The sea had flooded in, and now the towering island stood apart from the mainland.

The ground had split open, creating a chasm about 1,600 feet wide, filled with seawater. Deep within that bottomless abyss, it felt as if some giant beast was lurking, hidden from sight.

Everyone who had come was blocked by the wide stretch of water. Even though it was only about 1,600 feet across, it felt like a barrier between two worlds.

The place was wrapped in dense fog, making it impossible to see what was happening on the island.

Everyone crowded along the shoreline, hesitating. Nobody had the guts to go any closer.

A 6foottall golden dog was sniffing around the crowd, but soon looked confused. It transformed into a human, looking apologetic.

Kid, this place is a mess. Too many scents mixed together. It’ll be tough to sort them out, so just be patient,Gavin said.

Chloe ignored him, her gaze locked onto the misty mountain in the distance. Nobody knew what was on her mind.

Just then, a massive, burly man let out a booming shout, launched himself off the ground, and flew straight toward the mountain across the water.

A dozen or so blackclad figures followed close behind, moving as light as feathers. Each of them sported a pair of sleek, shadowy wings, making them look seriously mysterious.

They were like assassins straight out of a legend.

Chloe narrowed her eyes.

So all the power players from my previous life have shown up here. If I remember right, in about half a month, that’s when these guys really start rising to power, Chloe thought.

A faint smile tugged at her lips.

Looks like the chaos in Lakeside has everything to do with these people getting stronger, she thought to herself

Gavin shifted back to human form, grabbed Chloe’s arm, and pulled her back. He leaned in close and whispered as her cap

There are a bunch of toptier powered humans here. We’d better stay out of the way I just heard there are some abandoned skyscrapers over there. Let’s go see if we can score some loot,he said

As he spoke, he stood on his tiptoes, trying to get a better look at the distance.

Over there, folks like us can only pick up whatever’s left behind. Don’t get any wild ideas. Keeping ourselves alive is the real priority,he added.

They’d barely taken a few steps when Gavin realized Chloe wasn’t budging at all.

He pleaded earnestly, Kid, Lakeside is way too much trouble for people like us. The best way to survive is to keep a low profile and act weak.”

He dropped his voice to a whisper. Relax, I haven’t even shown my real skills yet. Trust me, I can totally take care of you.”

Even though his power level only went up to four, he always played the part of a newbie powered human, blending in with the scavenger crews, and managed to pick up quite a few treasures that way.

Playing dumb and hiding your claws is the real trick to staying alive out here,he added.

Chloe couldn’t help but roll her eyes. Gavin was definitely wellintentioned, but the guy just kept rambling on, and it was really starting to wear on her patience.

She was just about to say something when a sudden commotion broke out nearby.

As Chloe turned around, she saw a giant sawtooth beast, nearly sixteen feet long, burst out of the water. Its gaping mouth took up almost its entire body.

When it opened wide, those jagged teeth looked wickedly sharp under the sunlight.

With one powerful snap, it snatched the burly guy who was flying out front right out of the air.

As its jaws slammed shut, blood splattered three feet away, and the levelfive powered human was devoured in a heartbeat.

Their faces drained of color as everyone instinctively backed away.

Gavin was shoved around, stumbling, but he stayed right by Chloe’s side, protecting her.

Kid, we gotta get out of here,he urged.

He grabbed her hand and desperately tried to push his way out, but the crowd was just too thick. Before he knew it, he got knocked to the ground.

People were getting trampled left and right, and a huge foot was about to stomp right on Gavin’s head.

Suddenly, a gust of wind swept through, and the crowd got shoved back all at once.

Gavin scrambled up, didn’t have time to dust himself off, and dragged Chloe with him as he bolted.

Chloe still had no clue what was happening, so she just followed his lead.

Kid, see? I told you, luck’s always got my back. Almost got stomped to death, but somehow I made it out. Thank heavens,Gavin said, still catching his breath.

Chloe couldn’t help but twitch her lips. Seriously, I’m your real guardian angel, she thought.

Nobody saw what happened in the trench comingrumor has it, all those powered humans with wings got chomped down by the sea beast.

Things went south right from the getgo, and everyone was totally bummed out.

Chloe sat at the very edge of the crowd, listening to everyone anxiously recounting their troubles.

Damn, we knew Lakeside had gone through a total upheaval, but who would’ve thought it would actually turn into an island?someone sighed.

Forget about searching for suppliesjust getting across that 1,600foot stretch of water is tough enough,” another person muttered.

Plenty of people were already starting to back out.

Especially those from the smaller bases were already leaving in a hurry.

Come on, let’s get out of here. We’re just a small group with weak powers. Forget about treasure hunting. If we make it out alive, that’s good enough for us,one of them shouted.

One group left, then another, and soon more and more people started heading out.

The big bases will probably roll in any minute now. We’re just a ragtag bunch. If we somehow make it across that 1,600foot stretch of water, we’re still just cannon fodder, someone muttered.

Before long, most of the smart ones had already slipped away.

Gavin was still trying to convince Chloe. So, when are we heading out? Most of Riverside’s a wreck, but there’s still plenty to scavenge. Let’s hurry over and see what we can find.”

You go ahead,Chloe replied.

She listened intently to the conversations around her, never once looking back.

She had her own reasons for entering Lakeside.

Gavin, frustrated, sprang up from the ground.

Why won’t you listen to anything I say? If your eyes didn’t look so much like someone from my family, I would’ve left you behind long ago,he snapped.

With that, he turned and stormed off, fuming.

Chloe let out a deep sigh of relief. Finally, my head can get some peace from all that endless nagging, she thought.

But before long, Gavin came stomping back, still fuming, and plopped down right next to her.

I give up, you win,he muttered.

Chloe frowned. I’m not your sister.”

Gavin took a deep breath. I know, but I figure if I’m good to you, maybe someone out there will be good to my sister, too.”

Chloe was at a loss. Seriously, what kind of logic is that?she thought.

Still, Gavin was a pretty decent guy, definitely good enough to bring into the base.

At Blaze Haven, people didn’t need to be powerful. They could even be just an ordinary person, but being evilhearted was absolutely offlimits.

Quality over quantity, always. That was why there were less than a hundred people at Blaze Haven.

When Gavin brought up his sister, his mood took a dip, but he quickly pulled himself together. He sneakily pulled out a bottle of water and a ration bar from inside his jacket, glancing around to make sure no one was watching, just like a thief.

Seeing that nobody was paying attention, he quickly stuffed them into Chloe’s hands.

Her hand froze.

Wait, isn’t this the water I gave you?Chloe said, her voice just loud enough for the people nearby to catch it.

Gavin was startled and quickly pressed a finger to his lips, trying to shush her before anyone else noticed.

Are you trying to get us killed? Drink it up, quick,he hissed.

Several people had already noticed the water in his hand. Crap, we need to finish this fast, he thought.

Chloe gave him a long, meaningful look, then twisted off the cap and drank half of it in one go.
