He struggled hard, finally freeing one arm and stretching it desperately toward Phantom. 

“Babe, wait up for me!” Jagger shouted. 

Chloe was speechless. 

She never would’ve guessed that Jagger, the bandit who could stir up storms in her previous life, would fall so deeply for the Phantom 

Zombie. 

Suddenly, Chloe remembered something. 

Back in her previous life, Jagger was thriving as a bandit, but for some reason, he suddenly joined an obscure team. 

That team later shot to fame, even making it onto the rankings. 

As far as Chloe could recall, they were the only team that ever survived an encounter with the Phantom Zombie.

Jagger was a powerful level–six powered human, and his buddies couldn’t hold him back at all. He sent them flying with a single kick. 

He stumbled over to Phantom, grinning like an idiot. 

“Babe, can I join your team?” Jagger asked. 

Everyone gave him weird looks. 

Emily snickered. “You sure you like her?” 

Jagger nodded vigorously, flexing his biceps for everyone. “I’m a level–six powered human. I can fight, I can take a beating. Come on, take me in! 

“I can handle all the heavy work at the base, take care of zombies and mutant beasts, and I can even whip up meals and do the laundry. Jagger kept rambling on. 

Chloe cut him off, “Wait, wait, do you even know who she is?” 

“She’s my babe! She didn’t say no, so that means she agrees, right, Phantom?” Jagger said. 

Jagger stared at Phantom with heartfelt devotion, but she just looked confused, like she only half understood what was happening. 

Chloe confessed, “You need to think this through. She’s the Zombie King.” 

Her voice was barely above a whisper, but she spoke with deliberate emphasis, making sure only Jagger could catch her 

words.

Jagger paused for a moment, then chuckled softly. 

“You’re lying to me,” he said. 

With that pure and innocent face, how could she possibly be a zombie?‘ he thought. 

Chloe didn’t say a word, her eyes solemn and serious. 

Jagger glanced at the others, and they all nodded solemnly. 

Chloe took the milk carton from Phantom and handed it to Jagger. 

“You got beat up just now, not because the milk was expired, but because she only drinks blood,” Chloe said. 

Jagger stood there, stunned, his face just dropped and his eyes started to well up. 

‘Man, I finally fall for a girl, and all that passion was for nothing,‘ he thought, feeling utterly defeated. 

He looked completely crushed. 

“Then… why is she different from other zombies?” Jagger asked.

“That’s a secret of our base, so I can’t spill it. All I can say is, once I hit level ten, she’ll be able to fully think like a human,” Chloe replied. 

Jagger didn’t totally get it, but he understood enough, and his eyes lit up. 

“So you’re saying Phantom might really turn into a human?” Jagger asked, hope shining in his voice. 

Chloe paused for a moment, then said, “It’s not that she’ll become human, but she’ll think and look just like one. What’s going on inside her? No clue.” 

“Still into her after hearing all that?” Chloe asked. 

Jagger gazed at Phantom, caught in a battle between his heart and his head. 

His buddies rushed over, just in time to hear what Chloe said, and their faces went white as a sheet. 

“Boss, don’t go losing your mind! Being bandits is awesome–we eat good food, drink good booze, rough up anyone who pisses us off, and if we fancy a girl, we just grab her for ourselves,” one of them blurted out. 

Jagger took a deep breath, like he was about to make the biggest decision of his life. 

He turned to his crew and said, “Guys, this is the first time in my life I’ve ever fallen for a girl. I’m joining that base. You can come with me and we’ll stay brothers, or we part ways right here–your call” 

Everyone was stunned, eyes popping out in disbelief. 

‘Boss is seriously dumping us for a zombie? For real?‘ they thought, totally floored. 

“We wanna join the base too!” the whole crew chimed in. 

Honestly, they had no choice. Without Jagger, their gang was just a bunch of nobodies–a motley crew that’d get steamrolled 

sooner or later. 

Chloe could hardly believe it. “You’re really going to join Blaze Haven because of her?”

Chapter 268 

“Blaze Haven? That name’s awesome. I like it!” Jagger said, flashing a big grin. 

So, the team just got a whole lot bigger. 

From eight people, they were now a crew of forty. 

They tagged along with the other factions and made their way toward Lakeside. 

Emily watched Jagger trailing after Phantom, always at her beck and call, and couldn’t help but feel suspicious. 

“Chloe, I just don’t get it. Doesn’t Jagger seem kind of sketchy?” Emily whispered.

“He’s bad, but at least he’s honest about it. He’s not a backstabber, and he’s never eaten human flesh,” Chloe replied. “That’s enough for me,‘ she thought. 

In her previous life, even though Jagger was a bandit leader, he still held onto the last shred of humanity. Plus, he was totally love–struck. Someone like that was definitely worth having as a friend.. 

Emily finally felt reassured, but a mischievous grin spread across her face. She walked over to Jagger and leaned in close. 

“Hey, Jagger, you know Phantom loves eating people and drinking their blood, right?” Emily teased. 

He hesitated for a second, but then his expression eased up. 

“Phantom’s so cute and pretty. Anyone she eats must’ve been a bad guy anyway.” Jagger shrugged it off. 

Emily was left speechless. She waved at Chloe and mouthed, “Total love–struck fool.” 

Each team had it’s own captain, leading their squad smoothly forward. 

Chloe noticed that while her group was rocking whatever clothes they felt like, the powered humans from the big bases were all sporting identical battle suits. 

Frank cracked a big grin. “We hunted a ton of mutant beasts this time and scored some awesome loot. Once we’re back, I’ll hook everyone up with a custom battle suit.” 

“Frank, can I have a dress instead?” Chiara asked, her eyes wide with hope. 

“Sure thing, Chiara. I’ll make you a special one just for you,” Frank replied with a warm smile. 

This time, the powered humans were nothing like the ones they’d met a few days ago. These guys were well–trained, suited up in matching battle uniforms, and armed to the teeth. 

Emily and the others followed right behind Chloe, not daring to leave her side for even a second 

The crews were crammed together, shoulder to shoulder, eyeing each other warily–everyone on edge, ready for trouble 

A deadly, eerie tension hung in the air 

Despite the crowd, the silence was downright creepy. 

They made their way back to the coastline, staring across the 100–feet–wide channel at Lakeside–now completely cut off a lonely island. Chloe squinted, her gaze sharpening. 

Over just a few days, the monstrous beasts lurking in the water had already swallowed up countless people.

By now, not a single powered human even dared to go near that island anymore. 

Just then, Chloe suddenly felt a hostile gaze locked onto her; someone kept shooting her dirty looks. 

Chloe glanced in that direction. 

Someone was openly glaring at her, making no effort to hide their hostility. 

When Chloe looked over, the guy just flashed her a taunting grin.
