As he spoke, Jagger’s fists were clenched so hard they looked like they could crush iron, and he was about to rush out. Thankfully, his buddies held him back just in time.Â
“Jagger, hold on! Don’t do anything rash. We gotta listen to Chloe now,” one of them urged.Â
Chloe’s lips twitched awkwardly. Having a bunch of guys in their thirties and forties treated her like this was just plain awkward.Â
Emily shot him a sideways glance. “Don’t go looking for trouble.”Â
Jagger thought Emily was scared, so he thumped his chest and promised, “Hey, as long as I’m around, nobody’s gonna mess with you.”Â
Jagger was already huge–bigger and bulkier than Frank–and his booming voice was loud enough to make a bunch of powered humans turn to look.Â
Chloe couldn’t help but facepalm, feeling totally speechless.Â
“Don’t bother with them right now,” she said.Â
With all the major bases gathered here, the main thing now was figuring out how to get across this deep sea.Â
With Chloe calling the shots, Jagger shot Jaliyah and her crew a fierce glare before finally backing off.Â
Jaliyah sneered, “Looks like she’s scared now. Wasn’t she acting all tough before?”Â
Jacob, right next to her, just smiled quietly.Â
“That’s right. Who wouldn’t give the Linville family from Starlight Base some credit? And as for a tiny base like theirs, if the boss says the word, they’ll be gone in a flash,” he said.Â
Jaiden shot Chloe a suspicious look, doubt flickering in his eyes.Â
“Ishaan, is that the girl you mentioned–Chloe–the one bundled up from head to toe?” he asked.Â
Ishaan nodded quickly. “Yeah, Dad, she’s super tough–and really gorgeous, too.”Â
“A tiny squad of just a few dozen people thinks they can fight for the prize against one of the top bases? They really don’t know their place, Jaiden scoffed.Â
He gave their little forty–person team a once–over, with nothing but disdain in his eyes.Â
If Jacob hadn’t sworn up and down that Chloe was actually tough, Jaiden would’ve thought his son was just head over heelsÂ
for her.Â
Jaiden spoke in a tone that was just loud enough for both sides to catch every word, and when he glanced at Blaze Squad, his eyes were clouded with menace.Â
Suddenly, heavy, perfectly synchronized footsteps thudded from behindÂ
A group in military gear, each packing a submachine gun, strode in, looking serious.Â
“Oh my god, it’s the Ebony Base guys, someone whispered.Â

“Is that Noah up front? I heard he’s already a level six powered human, and he’s only in his twenties. Man, that’s impressive!” another person said.Â
The powered humans from Ebony Base were dressed way more upscale than everyone else.Â
Noah, especially, caught everyone’s eye–tall, upright, and full of confidence, with a stern expression and a face so captivating that plenty of women couldn’t help but fall for him.Â
Jaliyah sneaked a glance back.Â
Her face went bright red in an instant.Â
Jaiden couldn’t help but grin. “So, what do you think? Not bad, huh? Noah’s pretty impressive.”Â
Jaliyah blushed even harder. “Dad!”Â
“Alright, alright, I’ll stop teasing. But when Noah comes over, don’t let the chance slip by,” Jaiden said, still smiling.Â
Jaliyah nodded eagerly, like a chick pecking at grain. “Mm–hmm, got it, Dad!”Â
The moment Noah arrived, he caused a stir–heads turned everywhere.Â
Compared to Chloe’s pitiful forty–person squad, the Ebony Base team was absolutely jaw–dropping.Â
Three hundred strong, marching in perfect formation, and every single powered human was at least level five.Â
The other bases‘ people couldn’t help but gasp in awe.Â
Everyone scrambled to chat them up, hoping to cozy up to the Ebony Base crew.Â
Noah’s eyes swept over the crowd, his cold, distant gaze landing on each person like a blade across their skin. Everyone felt a chill run down their spine.Â
But when his eyes landed on a small figure dressed head–to–toe in black, face completely covered, a faint smile tugged at his lips.Â
The icy killing intent around him softened, as if touched by a spring breeze.Â
Jaliyah squealed, “Dad, is he looking at me?”Â
‘Of course he is. Our Jaliyah’s the prettiest girl in the whole place,” Jaiden said with a proud grin.Â
Everyone else, no matter if they were guys or girls, looked like they’d been through hell, but Jaliyah stood out in her pink dress, looking like a breath of fresh air–totally impossible to miss.Â
Behind her, Chloe looked away and fixed her eyes on the misty island off Lakeside, her face seriousÂ
Noah walked up to the shoreline, and whether it was intentional or not, he found himself walking right next to ChloeÂ
“Thanks for coming, everyone. Ebony Base has received word that a mysterious substance has appeared in Lakeside… Noah began.Â
After Noah finished his official speech, everyone started discussing how they were going to get across that 100–foot–wideÂ
shoreline.Â
Eventually, each base leader took turns introducing their team’s strengths, making it easier to divvy up the tasks.Â

“Radiant Base–two level six powered humans…”Â
“Highland Base–one level six powered human…”Â
Most bases had one level six powered human and a handful of level fives.Â
Nobody even bothered to mention Blaze Squad. They were so few, it was like they didn’t exist.Â
‘Good, that’s just what I wanted,‘ Chloe thought. ‘It’s not the time to stand out yet..Â
But some people just couldn’t let it go.Â

Jaliyah watched as all the big bases finished their intros, and right as Noah was about to speak, she suddenly flashed a sweet smile.Â
It was like she’d only just noticed Chloe standing there.Â
“Huh? Which base are you guys from? Only forty people? That’s pretty sad,” she teased.Â
“Did you even mention how many people you’ve got or what level your powered humans are?” she added.Â
Then she covered her mouth, pretending to be shocked.Â
“Wait, don’t tell me you don’t have a single level six powered human? That won’t work. If you don’t have a level six leading your team, you’re not allowed in,” she said, her voice full of mockery.Â
With that, she delivered a sharp stomp to the foot of a woman standing next to Jaiden.Â
The woman had a sweet, innocent look. She was Jaiden’s new companion.Â
She shot Jaliyah a nervous glance and said, “Jaliyah, don’t make things hard for them. Maybe they’re just scavengers hoping to get lucky.”Â
She spoke carefully, her voice trembling as if she was scared to say the wrong thing.Â
Chloe’s head shot up, and when she spotted that familiar face, a cold, wicked grin curled at her lips.Â
‘Figures. Fate just loves throwing my enemies in my way. Didn’t expect you to survive, and now you’ve latched onto some big shot, Chloe thought.Â
Jaliyah, furning, slapped the woman hard across the face. “What did you just say?”Â
Sophie covered her face, tears streaming down as she stammered, “Ms. Linville, I…”Â
Jaiden wrapped Sophie in his arms and glared hard at Jaliyah. “She’s your mother, for crying out loud. Have some respectÂ
Jaliyah screeched, “Ugh, as if! That bitch could ever be my mother?”Â
“She’s your elder, you know. How can you act so rude?” Jaiden shot back.Â
Jaiden had a soft spot for Jaliyah, but honestly, most of it was because she was Noah’s fiancée.Â
So even with everyone watching, she could talk back all she wanted. He’d just let it slide.Â
He gently soothed Sophie in his arms. “Sophie, are you alright? Jaliyah’s just been spoiled by me.Â

Sophie trembled, collapsing weakly in Jaiden’s embrace. As he held her, she stole a glance at Noah, her eyes shining withÂ
awe.Â
“It’s okay. Jaliyah’s still young. I won’t hold it against her,” she said softly.Â
“That’s my sweet Sophie,” Jaiden replied, his voice gentle.Â
With everyone watching, Jaiden and Sophie were openly flirting, and Jaliyah was so furious she looked like she might explode. Ishaan tugged at her sleeve.Â
Ishaan gave her a quick wink.Â
That’s when Jaliyah realized Noah was still standing right there, and she immediately put on her best innocent act.Â
“Noah, please don’t take it personally. I just got way too angry,” Jaliyah said.Â
