Every time Chloe looked at Filip, she couldn’t resist pinching his cheeks.

Filip looked at Chloe, feeling amused and helpless. “Is this your weird little habit or something, Chloe?” 

“Your face is just too cute. You’re always so icy and serious. You should smile more,” Chloe said with a grin. 

Filip wasn’t much of a talker. Whenever people were chatting, he’d just stand quietly in the corner, keeping to himself. 

It wasn’t always like this; he used to be the chattiest kid around. 

“Chloe, Emily said there’s a bunch of zombies over there. I want to go out and take them on,” Filip said. 

Every time they went zombie hunting, Chloe would always hold him back, saying he wasn’t strong enough yet. 

This time, when the group headed to Lakeside, Filip stayed behind in Riverside. By the time they met again, he had already advanced from a Level 2 powered human to Level 5. 

It just showed how tough and determined he was. 

“Okay,” Chloe replied. 

“Really?” Filip’s eyes lit up, and for once, there was something other than his usual calm on his face. 

Chloe nodded, but added, “Just so you know, I’m not stepping in.” 

Filip got even more excited and planted a loud kiss right on her cheek. 

He was overjoyed. 

Everyone was left speechless. 

“Chloe, this is not fair. I want to join the fight, too,” Chiara said, putting her hands on her hips in protest. 

“Alright, you can join in, but make sure you stick with the team, okay?” Chloe replied. 

“Okay, got it,” Chiara said with a grin. 

Filip and Chiara stuck their heads out, eyes wide and hopeful, using their powers to try and catch a glimpse of zombies storming the city. 

However, they were bound to be disappointed. 

Chiara pulled her head back in through the window, looking confused as she glanced at Emily in the passenger seat. Emily didn’t you say the zombies were surrounding the city? How come I haven’t seen them?” 

Emily shrugged. “What zombie would dare stick around since a badass like you is here? 

Chiara immediately caught Emily’s meaning, her eyes blinking in surprise. Emily, do you mean the zombies sensed how 

strong we are and decided to bail?” 

Emily nodded, chin held high with pride. “And don’t forget, Phantom and I deserve some credit, too 

Chiara looked totally lost, and Chloe couldn’t help but laugh. She took a sip of her smoothie and started to explain.

“Spirit–powered abilities are special. Once you reach a certain level, you can control lower–level zombies. If you’re even stronger, you might even be able to control the minds of mutant beasts,” she said. 

Emily had just reached Level 5; she still didn’t have full control over zombies yet. 

The real reason the zombies backed off was that they could sense the terrifying aura of the Zombie King. 

Phantom was the Zombie King herself, and with her spirit powers, it was no surprise she could control other zombies. 

In Chloe’s previous life, whenever zombies besieged the city, Phantom was always there, making things even messier. 

As Chloe thought about it, a sudden realization hit her. She thought, ‘Why not keep some zombies in the Botanic Gardens? 

“That way, the powered humans at the base would have a place to train and fight, and it would give the base an extra layer of defense. 

With that in mind, Chloe gave Phantom her orders. 

The vehicles rolled steadily down the road, everything going smoothly. Out of nowhere, things took a wild turn. 

The grass suddenly shot up like it had been pumped full of growth hormones, growing bigger and longer at a crazy speed. 

To everyone’s horror, it actually started sprouting tentacles. 

The lead vehicle was completely stuck, its four wheels tightly entwined by the winding vines, making it impossible to move forward. 

Gray spikes started sprouting from the ground one after another. 

Suddenly, one of the tires exploded. 

William’s voice crackled through Chloe’s walkie–talkie. “Captain Yates, the mutant plants just blew out our tires. Looks like we’ll have to camp out for the night and head out tomorrow.” 

“Sure, Chloe replied. She got out of the car, and Filip followed right behind her. 

Sure enough, up ahead, there were thick patches of gray thorns, each one sporting sharp spikes that were a good 4 inches long. 

Countless vines snaked forward through the gaps like serpents. The vines were dark red, with large, plump green leaves shaped like hearts. 

Chloe’s eyes suddenly sharpened, and she called out urgently, “It’s Bloodvine. Quick, everyone, get ready to fight.” 

Her voice rose instinctively as she grabbed Filip and pulled him with her, retreating swiftly. 

At that moment, the Bloodvine lashed out like lightning, shooting straight at a soldier who couldn’t escape in time, arabbing right through his chest. 

The Bloodvine started making loud slurping noises, as if it were hungrily sucking up blood. 

The soldier didn’t even get a chance to scream before he turned into a dry, shriveled corpse. 

Gasps and shocked cries broke out all around the crowd. 

Someone screamed, freaking out, “What the hell is that thing?”

“Mindy, now. Hit it with fire,” Chloe yelled.

Mindy and the other fire–powered humans sprang into action, flames erupting all over their bodies. 

The moment the fire appeared, the Bloodvine recoiled, sensing the threat, then started tentatively lashing out again. 

However, except for Mindy, none of their flames had any effect on the Bloodvine. 

If Chloe hadn’t jumped in, someone would have been snatched and sucked dry right then and there. 

“That’s odd. Bloodvine is supposed to grow in dark, damp swamps. How could it show up here?” Chloe said. 

While everyone was busy fighting off the Bloodvine, Chloe took a moment to check out the area around them. 

Her eyes landed on a patch of ruins, charred and blackened by fire. 

Bones were scattered everywhere, piled up in heaps across the ground. 

A gust of wind swept through, peeling back a patch of Bloodvine from the ground. Everyone gasped, stunned by what was revealed. 

Underneath, there was nothing but bones. Some belonged to beasts, some to humans. 

“No wonder the Bloodvine is here. Could it have drained the blood from every single person in this town?” Chloe whispered. 

Chloe conjured a massive ice blade, nearly ten feet long, and with a few swift swings, she hacked down over a dozen Bloodvine tendrils in an instant. 

Blood poured out from the broken vines. 

She instinctively stepped back, her gaze filled with malice and killing intent rising through her. “Damn Bloodvine.” 

It was all soaked with the blood of humans. 

Everyone’s eyes burned with fury. William roared, “Kill them.” 

All the powered humans acted in perfect sync, unleashing everything they had and blasting the Bloodvine with their 

powers. 

Chloe wielded her ice sword; wherever it struck, blood gushed like rivers, and nothing could stand in her way 

Phantom, who had been sipping her “milk“, picked up the bloody scent in the air. It overwhelmed her, making her lose control of her body. 

She suddenly leapt into the air, heading straight for the broken part of the Bloodvine 

The taste of blood set every nerve in her body ablaze with craving. From her mouth came that eerie, guttural laugh only zombie could make. 

Jagger had somehow gotten a tube, its other end connected to a large tank. It was not filled with water, but with fresh blood. 

“Don’t let all this blood go to waste. Save it all for Phantom,” he yelled, practically bouncing with excitement. 

Jagger hooked the severed Bloodvine to the tube, looking pleased. 

He thought, Phantom won’t have to worry about food for days.”
