The group of about six hundred people was getting closer.Â

Emily leaned in and whispered to Chloe. There are about a hundred survivors in the small supermarket ahead.”Â
She listened carefully again. “Two men are fighting.”Â
Emily blinked in surprise. “They look so familiar. Oh, I remember now. There are two of them, a man and a woman. I’ve seen them at a large supermarket before. How did they end up here?”Â
Chloe frowned, clearly confused. “Your memory is insane.”Â
Emily glanced over at Frank. “Frank, looks like you finally get your chance to settle the score.Â
“Didn’t we run into Joan at your family’s supermarket before? She was giving birth and passed out, and it was all Nina’s doing. Well, she’s here.”Â
Frank remembered. The situation had been dangerous and tense back then, so after finding Joan, they left right away.Â
Later, they learned that the childbirth had been perilous and that it was Nina who had incited people to throw her out to the zombies.Â
They used to be neighbors in the same building.Â
Thinking back to how Joan nearly lost her life and their baby during childbirth, Frank was filled with rage.Â
“Good,” he said.Â
They quickly stopped outside the mid–sized supermarket. The doors and walls had been smashed to pieces by zombies, and the whole place looked ready to fall apart.Â
Renee pulled a chainsaw out of her spiritual space, walked up, and sawed open the rolling gate without hesitation.Â
As soon as they stepped inside, the reek of trash and sewage slammed into them.Â
Renee couldn’t stand it. She clamped her nose shut and spun around to escape, only to crash straight into Frank as he walked in.Â
She covered her bleeding nose and rushed out.Â
“Renee, what’s wrong?” Evan ran over, worry written all over his face.Â
With a pale face, Renee pointed inside. “It stinks so freaking bad.”Â
She wondered how those survivors managed to live in there for so long.Â
Up on the second floor, the two who’d been fighting finally slumped to the ground, panting and soaked in swealÂ
Suddenly, they heard noises coming from downstairs. They peered down the stairwell and saw a few people waving their flashlights around.Â
The sudden glare made them squint, and one of them asked, “Are you here to save us?”Â
His voice shook, barely able to contain the excitement and hope bubbling up inside.Â

His voice was quiet, but everyone on the second floor heard it. They all shot up from the floor, wide–eyed.Â
They dashed to the stairwell and peered down.Â
Are you the rescue team?”Â
Awesome, the rescue team is finally here. Does this mean we can go home?”Â
Am I saved?”Â

I thought I was gonna die here, but the rescue team actually showed up. Looks like someone up there finally took pity onÂ
ne.”Â
Iveryone tried to suppress their sobs, covering their faces as tears slid through their fingers.Â
All that muffled crying ended up waking the baby, who started bawling at the top of his lungs.Â
Nina scrubbed at her tears, her voice cracking as she yelled down to the people below. “Do you guys have any baby formula? ‘ve got a little one up here, and he’s starving.”Â
he hesitated, then realized she was asking for too little, so she shouted again, “Just give me some food. I haven’t had a single ›ite all day.”Â
he couldn’t make out anyone’s faces below, but she could see a few figures waving flashlights around down there.Â
The baby’s crying was getting on her nerves.Â
Remembering that Bob said they were soldiers, she said impatiently and a bit bossily, “Are you even listening to me? Hurry ip and bring some food up here. I’m starving.”Â
Then she shoved Peyton down the stairs to get the food.Â
Peyton pushed up his glasses. “Hold on, let’s figure out what’s going on first.”Â
Vina was getting frustrated. “Didn’t Bob just say they’re soldiers? They’re supposed to rescue us, aren’t they?”Â
it wasn’t like she was clueless. After the apocalypse, she’d always been well–protected. Peyton was a water–powered human, so wherever he went, people always welcomed him.Â
After all, water was the one thing nobody could live without.Â
Along the way, they hadn’t run into any dangerous mutant beasts. The survivors around them were either just regular people or not particularly strongÂ
People were always putting them on a pedestal.Â
If it weren’t for the baby causing such a scene, they wouldn’t dare try to kick her out.Â
Nina said, “Hey, I’m talking to you. Why aren’t you answering? My husband is a water–powered human, you knowÂ
Frank instantly picked up on Nina’s voice and clenched his fists hardÂ
The flashlight beam shot right into her eyes.Â
“What the hell? Why are you shining that in my face! Are you crazy?” Nina shouted.Â

Frank let out a cold snort. “Looks like you’re the crazy one.”Â

Nina froze, her eyes going wide as if she’d just seen a ghost. “Frank? Wow, what a coincidence. Got any food on you? My kid is starving.”Â
Even though she was scared out of her wits, she still couldn’t help but ask for food.Â
Frank snorted coldly. “Yeah, I’ve got food.”Â
Nina’s eyes sparkled. She thought, Joan must not have spilled the beans to Frank. Perfect. Maybe I can use him to get us into a base.Â
She said. “Frank-”Â
Before she could finish, Frank interrupted her. “Are all of you survivors?”Â
3ob quickly replied, “Yes, we’ve got over a hundred survivors here. Are you guys soldiers? Did you come to save us?”Â
Frank let out a sneer. “Everyone except Nina and Peyton gets to come back to Blaze Haven with us.”Â
Blaze Haven could use more hands right now. Even if these folks were old, weak, or sick, they still made for a decent laborÂ
orce.Â
Suddenly, Frank thought of a more entertaining way to deal with them.Â
He thought, ‘Killing them would be too easy. In the apocalypse, living every day in fear is real torture. That’s worse than leath.Â
Therefore, he said, “What are you waiting for? Come down and follow us. It stinks in here. I can’t stand another second of it.”Â
To those survivors, Frank was their savior, the most benevolent person alive. Even his gruff voice sounded pleasant to them.Â
Let’s go. We’re leaving right now.” Everyone crowded onto the stairs, eager to get out.Â
Upstairs, Nina and Peyton turned pale.Â
Nina screamed, “Why aren’t you taking us? My husband is a water–powered human.”Â
She grabbed her baby and pushed into the crowd with Peyton.Â
Frank had already stepped outside, finally feeling like he’d escaped hell. The supermarket’s first floor was stacked with trash and waste; it made him gag at a glance.Â
He stood outside with his arms crossed, looking like a statue, untouchable and unshakableÂ
By the faint vehicle lights, he watched the survivors rush down, all skinny and ragged, looking worse than religresÂ
He scanned the crowd and quickly spotted the couple trying to sneak through unnoticedÂ
