A pair of greedy eyes pressed against the glass, glued to the inside. When they spotted the snacks and chilled watermelon on he table, drool smeared across the window, making it look absolutely gross. 

The moment they realized it was all girls inside, their hands got even more shameless. 

Chloe, want me to run them off?” Filip asked, frowning. 

Chloe popped a grape into her mouth. The cool sweetness exploded on her tongue, and she let her eyes flutter shut in omfort. 

Don’t bother with them. We’ll head out soon,” Chloe replied. 

That was high–strength bulletproof glass, upgraded by Frank himself. Not even a cannonball could crack it, let alone a fist. 

Wasting time here was pointless. By the time they gave up, all the other vehicles would be full, and they wouldn’t even have 

corner left to cry in. 

But an old woman, Ruth, was still stubbornly clawing at the window, her wrinkled face squished right up against the glass. She gripped a rock in her hand, banging it over and over while muttering curses nonstop. 

Open the door! Hurry up and let me in, you little brat!” she yelled. 

But the rock didn’t even leave a scratch on the glass. 

The man with a nasty glare dragged Ruth away from the window. 

‘Step aside, I got this,” he said. 

He grabbed a fire axe and swung it hard at the bulletproof glass. 

Not only did nothing happen, but the sound was barely a whisper. The glass just absorbed all the impact, as if it were enchanted. 

The force bouncing back made his arm go numb, and his hand slipped. He fell right off the Base Truck. 

He looked sallow and frail, barely able to stand after going so long without food or water. 

That single swing with the axe had drained what little strength he had left. 

He pressed his hands to the ground, needing several tries before he finally managed to slowly haul himself upright. 

“What the hell are you guys doing?” A sharp, angry voice cut through the air. 

It was Mindy, just back from behind the Base Truck. 

She’d gone to check out some mutant plants in the back. After handling them, she returned to find the Base Truck surrounded by a bunch of people. 

The four gaunt folks all turned to stare at Mindy. 

She was rocking bright, spotless clothes, and even had a faint, fresh scent about her. The way her outfit hugged her curves made her look like she’d just stepped out of a fashion magazine, not a wasteland. 

She actually had makeup on her face.

They were completely dumbfounded. 

Is she really from the apocalypse? they wondered. 

The four scrawny guys just stared, mouths hanging open, drool practically dripping down their chins. 

“Is she an angel?” one of them whispered.

But now, seeing Mindy, their eyes nearly popped out of their heads. 

The skinny woman beside them was instantly on high alert, stepping forward to block the men’s shameless stares. 

Mindy rolled her eyes, barely holding back a laugh. She took a few steps forward, and the woman across from her immediately tensed up. 

“What do you want?” the woman asked nervously. 

Mindy understood exactly what the woman was thinking. In this apocalypse, women without powers had no way to defend themselves. Their only way to survive was to depend on men. 

The guy behind her was probably her only hope for survival. 

Mindy flashed a smile and said, “I’m not here for trouble. You’re just blocking my way.” 

With that, she walked right past the woman and stepped into the Base Truck. 

Just as Mindy reached for the door, a wrinkled old hand grabbed the handle. Ruth’s bony face loomed right up close, almost touching hers. 

“Well, girl, are you the owner of this truck?” Ruth asked. 

With her high cheekbones and sharp eyes, she looked like trouble from the get–go. 

Ruth grinned, showing off a mouthful of yellow teeth that reeked so bad it made Mindy gag. 

Mindy pinched her nose and stepped back a few paces, her face blank. 

She pointed at the big truck nearby. “There’s still space over there. Hurry up and get over there. We’re leaving in a few minutes, so don’t miss your chance.” 

Ruth’s smile stiffened, her tone turning cold. “I’ve got my eye on this truck. I saw all that fruit inside. Come on, open up, I’m parched.” 

She said it as if she had every right to demand it. 

Mindy couldn’t help but let out a laugh of disbelief. Just as she was about to fire back, the door swung open from the inside, 

It was Emily. 

Emily bumped right into Mindy, catching her off guard while she was still tangled up with Ruth. “Finally! Took you long enough, Mindy.” 

Before Mindy could get a word in, Ruth slipped right through the crack in the door. She might have been nothing bur skin

The moment Ruth stepped inside, the blast of cold air hit her, and she felt her whole body relax.

Her eyes, sunken from months of malnutrition, suddenly bulged like brass bells. 

Her mouth dropped open so wide it looked like she could swallow a goose egg whole.

“The room is spotless, the air conditioning humming away, and the table is loaded with all sorts of fruit, veggies, and snacks. 

Ruth’s mouth was practically watering as she made a beeline for the table, barely able to contain her excitement. 

She was just a hair’s breadth from snatching that chilled watermelon when someone suddenly yanked her back by the collar. 

Emily’s furious voice shot out from behind. “What the hell is wrong with you? Didn’t they already set up a truck for you? 

“Scram! Get out, now!” 

Ruth lunged forward, reaching desperately for that chilled watermelon. She was so close that she could almost taste it, but no matter how hard she strained, she couldn’t get any closer. 

She spun around, plastering a groveling, pathetic smile on her face. 

“Please, honey, I haven’t eaten in three days. Just let me have a bite, I’m begging you. Bless you, you’re a saint!” Ruth begged. 

Emily wasn’t about to put up with her. She grabbed Ruth by the collar, ready to haul her out. 

Ruth’s fake smile vanished in a flash. She dropped to the floor and started throwing a full–on tantrum, rolling around and making a scene. 

Ruth cursed, “I can’t go on! You damn soldiers, stuffing your faces while I starve! Won’t even spare an old woman a bite? May lightning strike you down! May your children be born ugly as sin!” 

Her curses got nastier and nastier, so filthy that it was hard to even listen. She was practically foaming at the mouth, and Emily looked like she was about to be sick. 

A wind blade appeared out of nowhere. Chloe was ready to deal with Ruth once and for all, but then she noticed a hint of sympathy flicker across Chiara’s face. 

Chiara twisted her hands together, nervously tugging at the hem of her pants. “Chloe, maybe we should just give her something to eat?” 

Filip’s voice was sharp with annoyance. “Chiara, don’t be ridiculous.” 

Chloe cut Filip off before he could say more. She didn’t get angry, just asked gently, “Are you sure?” 

Chiara looked down, unsure what to say.
