Chapter 30Â
“This is my stuff,” Emily said, puffing up her chest. She was a powered human now. There was no way she was going to let Chloe down.Â
But honestly, she was putting on a brave face. After being bullied for so long, running into her old tormentor again, no matter how different she was now, the old fears still lingered.Â
Chloe, watching from the corner, felt a sense of satisfaction. At least Emily had made progress.Â
The tall girl froze for a moment, clearly not expecting Emily to stand up to her. Her face twisted in anger. “Figures,” she said, crossing her arms. “Just a nobody from the sticks. I could understand your petty theft, but now you’re stealing in front of everyone?”Â
Emily’s face flushed with anger. “What are you talking about? When have I ever stolen anything?”Â
“Then what’s in your hand?” the tall girl shot back, pointing at the sack Emily was trying to hide behind her back. She’d seen plenty of people like Emily, always pretending to be something better, but in the end, they were just losers.Â
“I…” Emily was so angry she couldn’t get the words out.Â
Just then, a sharp voice cut through the tension. “If we’re thieves, then what does that make you? Bandits?”Â
The tall girl spun around, and when she saw Chloe, her tough–girl act instantly crumbled. “What’s that supposed to mean?” she said. “Everything in this dorm has an owner. I’m the floor leader. If there’s anything suspicious, it should be handed over to me.”Â
“Seriously?” Chloe stepped forward. “I’ve seen shameless people before, but you’re on a whole new level. You want us to hand over everything to you, and then what? You’re gonna go around and return it to everyone one by one?”Â
As she spoke, she walked up to them.Â
“Here’s a suggestion. Instead of wasting your time stealing from us, why don’t you raid other dorms for supplies? Don’t wait until we’ve taken everything and then come begging for scraps.” She punctuated her words by tapping the back of her machete against her palm.Â
“W–Wait and see!” the tall girl said, turning and storming off with her three friends.Â
They didn’t dare go downstairs, so they stuck to scavenging on the twelfth floor. Luckily, they found plenty of snacks and didn’t bother Emily again. But every time they crossed paths, they glared at her.Â
“What are you looking at?” Emily asked, her eyes blazing as she waved the machete. “Keep staring, and I’ll hack you to pieces!”Â
She had a weapon. She was a powered human, and she’d already killed plenty of zombies. ‘Why should I be scared of a few unarmed girls?‘ she thought.Â
After a few days of training with Chloe, Emily was finally starting to build some real confidence.Â
After absorbing a zombie core, she was able to control the glass beads for longer and even move bigger things, like plates and bowls.Â
She still thought her powers were a bit useless, but seeing the look of excitement in Chloe’s eyes every time she showed off made her feel good about herself.Â
With all the blood in the cafeteria, zombies from outside swarmed the campus. Even some first–level ones were roaming around.Â
There was a heavy iron gate at the entrance to the first floor, and Chloe and Emily worked together to lock it tight.Â
Now, the only zombies they had to worry about were the ones already inside. This made it much easier for them to search the entire dorm for supplies.Â
But the further down they went, the less they found. By the time they reached the first floor, there was nothing left to eat.Â
Outside, the snow was falling even harder, turning everything into a blinding whiteout. In just one week, the snow had piled up so high that it completely covered the first floor.Â
Outside the window, the world was so quiet that all one could hear was the whisper of the snow. It almost made people forget there had ever been zombies.Â
But they knew that beneath all that snow, danger was still lurking.Â
Chloe and Emily huddled up in their dorm, cranking up the heater to fight off the cold.Â
It was so freezing that after getting their supplies, the four girls next door couldn’t even be bothered to take those heavy water jugs back.Â
When Chloe woke up, she couldn’t believe her eyes. Emily hauled every single water jug on each floor.Â
There wasn’t enough room in their dorm, so Emily stacked all the water jugs in the room across the hall and locked them up tight.Â
Emily collapsed on her bed, letting out a satisfied sigh as she stretched. “Man, with all this stuff, we won’t have to worry about food or water for at least half a year.”Â
Chloe couldn’t help but rain on her parade. “The snow is stopping tomorrow. Once it melts a little, we’re leaving.”Â
Emily blinked, a little confused. “Where are we going?”Â
“I’m heading to Grovenwich to pick up my aunt Linda and my cousins. The national power grid is still working, but no matter how many times I’ve tried, I can’t reach them,” Chloe said.Â
Emily’s face fell. “I don’t have any family. My uncle and aunt always saw me as a burden. From now on, wherever you go, I’ll follow. We’re a team now, and you’re the leader.”Â
“Alright,” Chloe said.Â
Emily didn’t expect Chloe to agree so quickly. The surprise hit her like a ton of bricks, and she nearly jumped off her bed, her eyes sparkling. “For real?”Â
“Yeah,” Chloe replied. Over the past few days, she’d figured out that Emily was just shy, not a naive saint. With her powers as a spirit–powered human, teaming up was a win–win. Now that they were partners, there was no need to keep anything secret.Â
“I’m a powered human with four abilities, like wind, wood, ice, and… space,” Chloe said.Â
Emily’s eyes widened, and she slapped a hand over her mouth to stop herself from squealing. “Space? Like in those webnovels?”Â
Chloe nodded. “Yeah, but it’s small, only about 150 square feet.”Â
“Still amazing. I knew I was destined for greatness. I end up with a space–powered human as my leader. How lucky can I get?” Emily laughed, practically bouncing with excitement.Â
Chloe didn’t boast about the size of her spiritual space, but she had to come clean with Emily. When itÂ
came to working together, the real benefits mattered more than just feelings.Â
55 vouchersÂ
As a space–powered human, Chloe’s spiritual space was basically a portable warehouse. As long as Emily stuck by her, she’d never go hungry. Emily wasn’t dumb. There was no way she’d ever betray Chloe.Â
Emily urged, “Quick! Toss all our supplies into your space, and don’t forget those water jugs I hid across the hall. I won’t let those four girls get their hands on them.Â
“Grab some clothes and bedding, too. We’ll need them later.” Emily rambled, tears streaming down her face.Â
‘Chloe actually trusted me with her spiritual space secret. That’s the biggest trust anyone’s ever given me. I’ll go through hell and back for her, Emily thought.Â
What Emily didn’t know was that Chloe wasn’t revealing her spiritual space just because they had grown close in the past few days. It was because of everything she remembered about Emily from her previous life.Â
With a wave of her hand, Chloe stored all the supplies that had cluttered up two–thirds of the dorm,Â
making them disappear into her spiritual space.Â
Emily was so hyped that she was about to scream again when the power went out.Â
Chloe’s face grew serious. In her previous life, electricity had lasted for three months. ‘Why did it only last half a month this time?‘ she wondered.Â
