Chapter 31
Chapter 31
Chloe wasn’t sure if it was because of the time travel or if the power lines in the university town had been damaged by zombies. Either way, surviving just got a lot harder.
“Chloe, what are we supposed to do?” Emily’s voice trembled in the dark.
“Go to sleep,” Chloe answered.
With no power, the AC was out, and the temperature in the dorm dropped quickly. Emily was shivering under her blanket, her whole body shaking.
Chloe, however, didn’t feel the cold at all. In fact, she found it quite comfortable. The chill in the air seemed to make her ice powers stronger. The slow but undeniable feeling actually made her enjoy the cold a little.
Suddenly, Emily crawled under Chloe’s blanket. She wanted to get warm, but the moment she touched Chloe, she pulled back like she’d been shocked. “Why are you so cold?” Her voice was shaking, her teeth chattering so loudly that it echoed in the quiet room.
“I’m an ice–powered human,” Chloe said, shrugging.
“Oh, right. So that’s what it feels like to have ice powers,” Emily said.
She suddenly perked up, her ears twitching as she listened closely to the four girls next door. A mischievous grin spread across her face.
“Those four girls are crying,” Emily said, shaking her head and clicking her tongue. “Simone actually made someone else warm her bed. That’s pretty shameless.”
Since discovering her spirit powers, Emily’s favorite thing to do was eavesdrop on her neighbors.
Chloe sighed and summoned a small stove from her spiritual space. The flames crackled happily, with sweet potatoes and regular potatoes roasting on the side.
Emily’s jaw dropped, her eyes lighting up with pure joy. If she weren’t worried Chloe might hit her, she would have kissed her cheek right there. “Oh, my God, Chloe. You actually brought a stove? You’re a lifesaver!”
“Just keep the stove by your bed, but not too close. Wouldn’t want to burn the place down,” Chloe said.
“Got it!” Emily replied.
With the stove crackling nearby, Emily finally drifted off to sleep, the delicious smell of roasted sweet potatoes in the air and a smile on her face.
Sure, the apocalypse was dangerous, but honestly, for Emily, normal life had been much worse. She’d endured endless curses, mounting debts she could never clear, and relentless bullying at school.
Now, with Chloe by her side, everything finally felt like it was getting better.
Late at night, Chloe was sound asleep when a hand reached out and gently shook her awake. She sprang up, grabbed the hand, and pinned the person down in one smooth motion.
“Chloe, it’s me!” Emily said in a low, urgent voice from the darkness.
“What’s going on?” Chloe asked, relaxing her grip.

Chapter 31
Emily pointed quietly at the door and whispered in Chloe’s ear, “There are about a dozen guys outside.
Seeing the confusion in Chloe’s eyes, Emily muttered under her breath, “They probably climbed over from the twelfth floor of the guys‘ dorm.”
The two dorm buildings were close enough that, with a rope or a long pole, they could easily cross from one to the other. But they’d need someone inside to help. Otherwise, it wouldn’t work.
“Chloe, they just went into the room next door,” Emily whispered, her ears straining to catch every sound. The more she listened, the angrier she got, her face twisting in fury.
“What are they saying?” Chloe asked.
“Those girls are unbelievable. They’re teaming up with those guys to take us out!” Emily hissed.
“What now?” Chloe asked quietly.
The next second, Emily’s cheeks flushed. “Well… um…”
Chloe caught on immediately. “Got it. Let’s get ready.” She summoned a crossbow from her spiritual space and handed it to Emily. “Don’t waste your shots.”
“W–What about you?” Emily asked, sounding nervous.
Chloe explained patiently, “We’re a team. You don’t have much attack power right now, so stay behind me. When the fighting starts, you handle the long–range shots.”
“B–But…” Emily hesitated, feeling unfair with the idea of Chloe facing danger alone.
Chloe growled, “No buts. I’m a wind–powered human. I’m faster than those speed types. Just don’t hit me by mistake.”
Emily lowered her head. “Like I ever would.”
Chloe and Emily had no idea how many powered humans were in that group. If it were only two or three, they could probably handle it. But if there were more, things could get dangerous fast.
Finally, the noise next door faded away. After a while, voices started jumbling together, and the four girls began talking about what was in Chloe’s room.
“Are you sure their room is full of supplies?” Jason asked.
Simone nodded eagerly. “Yeah, they’ve taken everything from the whole building.”
Another girl, who had just finished buttoning her shirt, added, “I saw it myself. Chloe was carrying a bunch of sacks, and Emily was dragging a huge duvet stuffed with supplies.”
Jason grinned with excitement. He’d already cleaned out the guys‘ dorm, but apart from a few clothes and shoes, there was barely any food left, and he’d eaten what little there was over the past few days.
He didn’t expect to hit the jackpot like this. Just thinking about Chloe’s stunning face made him lick his lips with anticipation. “Chloe, tonight, you’ll be begging for mercy in my bed.”
His crew snickered, their faces twisted with sleaze as they tried to flatter Jason.
Jason, after you’re done with her, how about letting us have some fun, too?” one of them asked.
Another guy rubbed his hands together, practically drooling. “Jason, we’ve never had fun with a girl this fine before.”
Jason’s eyes gleamed in the dark, but he just said with a grin, “Hell yeah. What’s mine is yours, boys.”

Chapter 31
Even though they were whispering, Emily caught every word. Her fists clenched, knuckles turning white with anger.
Chloe could guess exactly what was being said next door just by Emily’s reaction. She didn’t bother asking. Instead, she leaned in and whispered, “Emily, you probably have two types of powers.”
“Huh?” Emily blinked, confused.
“You’re a spirit–powered human, and your hearing is off the charts,” Chloe said with a grin. ‘No wonder Emily pissed off so many big shots in her previous life without getting caught, she thought.
Before Emily could get excited, every doorknob in their dorm started to turn.
Emily quickly ducked onto the balcony, her crossbow poking out as she aimed at the door.
Chloe slipped behind the door, her eyes so sharp that they seemed to swallow the night.
With a soft click, the door unlocked quietly, and a shadowy figure slowly poked his head inside.
In the dim light, the guy noticed that both beds had blankets puffed up, as if someone was hiding underneath. But when he looked around and found no supplies anywhere, his face soured.
Then he slowly closed the door and turned to glare at Simone, his eyes burning with anger.
Simone, completely clueless, urged him on from behind. “What are you waiting for? Get moving!”
The guy whispered something to Jason, who shot Simone a death glare. If it weren’t for the fact that they were desperate for women, he would’ve killed her right then and there. “Didn’t you say there were supplies? Where the hell is everything?” Jason asked.
