Chapter 33Â
Emily was totally jealous as she stared at Chloe. “Ice power is legit amazing. You don’t even feel the cold.”Â
“Your spirit power is also amazing.” Chloe said.Â
Emily wasn’t buying it. She thought, ‘Spirit power just lets me sense stuff nearby. It’s pretty useless in a real fight. I wish I could be strong like Chloe.’Â
Chloe caught Emily drift and gave her shoulder a reassuring pat. “A truly powerful spirit–powered human can control everything.”Â
“No way. That’s wild.” Emily’s jaw dropped.Â
“And that’s not all. Spirit attacks are terrifying. Once you level up, nobody can touch you.”Â
“Nobody?” Emily glanced down at her own small frame, full of doubt. She’d always been invisible and stuck in the background while everyone else had fun.Â
Now here was Chloe, someone crazy strong, telling Emily she could be powerful, too. It made Emily happy as well asÂ
nervous.Â
“You’ve gotta believe that you’re the strongest. If you don’t believe in yourself, nobody will,” Chloe insisted. She paused, and then added, “Once you hit level one, you can mess people up with your mind. Leave them dazed, or turn them into crazy idiots.”Â
Emily nodded, heart pounding. She couldn’t wait to reach level one. Maybe then she wouldn’t be dead weight anymore. Chloe had saved her life and given her a way to survive; she was deeply grateful.Â
After scouring the 12th floor, they crashed in a random dorm on the 11th. Even with multiple stoves burning, the cold cut deep. Emily couldn’t stop shivering.Â
Still, by apocalypse standards, they had it good. Most survivors were living through hell.Â
Later, Chloe finished absorbing her last core and felt her power surge. She was close to breaking through to level two.Â
Emily clutched the semi–clear zombie core Chloe had handed her, figuring out how to draw power from it. When she did, her senses sharpened instantly. Everything around her became crystal clear.Â
Just as Emily was about to tell Chloe, her face went pale. She grabbed Chloe’s arm. “Something is coming.” The footsteps were too light to be human or zombie. She didn’t know what it was.Â
They exchanged a look, then they moved. Chloe hid behind the door while Emily slipped onto the balcony.Â
A meow echoed through the room, making Emily let out a huge sigh of relief, but Chloe felt a chill run down her spine, every muscle tight with tension. ‘It’s got to be a mutant cat out there, Chloe thought.Â
Peeking through the door crack, Chloe spotted a huge shadow. It was a giant spotted cat, big as a tiger, pacing outside. Suddenly, its eyes met hers. Both of them froze.Â
The cat hissed and clawed violently at the door.Â
“It’s a mutant cat. Emily, get ready to fight,” Chloe called out.Â
Just as she finished, the door burst open. A blur shot inside at lightning speed. It was a speed–powered mutant cat, and its giant head turned, locking eyes with Chloe. Neither of them moved.Â
Chloe didn’t dare drop her guard. This thing was ridiculously fast, with venomous claws. One slip and it’d be over.Â

Chapter 33Â
Frost swirled around her, forming an ice shield. An ice sword materialized in her hand.Â
A crossbow bolt tore through the air and sank deep into the cat’s body. Emily’s hand shook and she’d missed the neck, but the shot was powerful enough to pierce straight through.Â
Blood spilled. The cat went berserk, shrieking, eyes burning red as it zeroed in on Emily. It lunged at her, claws out, ready to shred her.Â
But mid–attack, Chloe yanked its thick tail, holding on tightly. Enraged, the cat dragged Chloe across the floor.Â
Chloe gritted her teeth, pulling back with all her strength. “Emily, snap out of it! Aim for its head,” she shouted.Â
Emily jolted back to reality, loaded six bolts, and fired rapidly.Â
The cat froze just inches from Emily, its head riddled with bolts. With one last choked gasp, it collapsed.Â
Chloe dropped to the floor, hand numb from gripping the tail. Emily stood pale and trembling. “The cat…”Â
“It mutated and got speed powers. Lucky you hit it earlier and threw it off. Otherwise, we’d be dead,” Chloe breathed.Â
Emily shuddered. “A… mutant cat?”Â
Chloe nodded calmly. “Humans are at the bottom of the food chain now. Cats, dogs, bugs, anything can mutate.Â
“Just like we have powered humans and zombies, there are mutant beasts and zombie beasts. We can eat mutant beast meat, but zombie beasts are just rotten corpses.”Â
Chloe looked at Emily coolly. “Emily, welcome to the apocalypse.”Â
Emily’s face went white. She thought, ‘Yeah, this really is the end.”Â
Chloe formed an ice blade, sliced open the cat’s head, and dug out a glinting speed–powered core. It was exactly what she needed.Â
Chloe said, “Emily, I’m keeping this one. I’ll make it up to you later. If I find any spirit–powered cores, they’re yours.”Â
“Keep it.” Emily waved her off. “I barely helped. Even the crossbow bolts were yours.”Â
Chloe didn’t argue. Fair shares kept the team solid. She’d just plan to hunt more cores for Emily next time.Â
Noticing the broken hall window and remembering what Emily said, Chloe realized the cat must’ve jumped from the boys‘ dorm. ‘No way. There are mutant beasts over there?‘ Emily’s mind raced.Â
Chloe grabbed binoculars and looked across at the 11th floor of the boys‘ dorm. What she saw froze her blood. An even bigger mutant cat was going crazy. Guys were sprinting down the hall, but the cat swiped heads off or swallowed them whole.Â
Both girls gasped. “Oh crap,” Emily stammered, lips trembling. “That mutant cat over there… Don’t tell me it’s-”Â
