Chapter 37 

Jason was giving Chloe a super shady look, like he was already plotting something. 

Chloe stuffed the mutant core into her backpack quickly. Right then, she felt a weird little buzz from her spiritual space. This was the third time it had happened. First with that fire–powered zombie core, then with the mutant kitten. 

Chloe was starting to think these powered cores might be a big deal for her spiritual space. The problem was that it was still early days in the apocalypse. Most zombies were just basic ones, without cores. 

She’d only managed to get a few, and she needed to use them to level up her own powers first. 

Chloe brushed off Jason’s nonsense and called out to the balcony, sounding totally wiped, “Emily, get out here and break down this mutant cat. If it freezes solid, we’re screwed trying to move it.” Then she just slumped to the floor, wiping cold sweat off her forehead. 

Jason’s glaring daggers at Chloe, pissed. “What’s that supposed to mean?” 

Chloe looked up with these wide, innocent eyes, like a confused little bunny. “Huh? What’s wrong?” 

“Wrong? We had a deal. You take the core, I get the cat’s body,” Jason snapped. 

Emily stumbled out, still looking pale and weak. She let out a scoff, lips curled in a sarcastic smirk. “I’ve seen some shameless people, but you? You’re something else.” 

“Who are you calling shameless?” Jason’s face darkened, but honestly, he was feeling pretty smug. Emily and Chloe looked completely drained; their powers must be toast. 

He thought it was time to push a little harder. “Emily, remember our deal. If you wanna keep everything for yourself, you gotta get past me and my blade first,” Jason said, swinging his shiny machete around. 

The other guys behind him raise their weapons, too. They conveniently forgot that Chloe was the one who gave them those blades in the first place. Now they were all eyeing that dead mutant cat; they had nothing to eat besides it. 

Emily shrank a little but fired back, “You guys are unbelievable. We agreed to take down the cat together, but you all hid inside like cowards. Now that Chloe and I actually killed it, you show up trying to steal the prize? Forget it.” 

Jason grinned, evil as hell, slinging his machete over his shoulder as he closed in on Emily. “Oh yeah?” 

Emily was forced back into the dorm, her face tense. She had nothing left in the tank; there was no way she could fight Jason now. Suddenly, it hit her what he was really after, and her expression dropped. “What do you want?” 

“What do you think? You two are clearly running on empty,” Jason said, glancing at Chloe still sitting on the floor, pale as a ghost. Then he laughed, fully showing his true colors, “Boys, let’s go. Grab these two.” 

“You got it,” they replied, leering as they moved toward Chloe. 

One guy taunted, “Hey, ice queen, where’s all that power now? Thought you were tough. Why don’t you make a run for it?” He rubbed his chin with leer. 

Another creep added, “Damn, she’s fine. Never had a girl like her before. Jason, when you’re done, save some for us, yeah?” 

“Hell yeah. If I eat, you all eat,” Jason said, swaggering like he owned the place.

Chapter 37 

It was Emily. Backed into the dorm, she snatched the crossbow off the table and now had it aimed right at Jason and his crew. “Touch her and I won’t miss next time.” 

Jason ducked just in time, the bolt scraping his scalp. “You bitch, you’re dead,” he snarled, spinning around to go after Emily. 

But before he took another step, a sharp, icy pain shot through his back. He looked down and saw an ice sword sticking straight out of his chest, blood dripping off the blade. 

Jason’s eyes go wide. “You-” was all he got out before he dropped dead.. 

Chloe stood up slowly, her eyes sweeping the room coldly and mercilessly. Zero weakness left. “Hand over everything you’ve got, and I might let you live.” 

The guys scrambled backward like they had seen a ghost, tripping over themselves to get away. 

Another ice arrow shot out, hitting one guy right in the forehead. Chloe twirled her ice blade, flashing a wicked grin. “Thought you wanted a piece of me? Come and get it.” 

Some of the guys were crying now, shaking their heads frantically. “No. We wouldn’t dare…” 

Another ice arrow shot out and this time, it took a guy’s head clean off. Blood sprayed everywhere, painting the white walls red. 

Chloe’s voice dropped, cold as death, creeping closer like a demon crawling out of hell. Every step she took felt like a boot crushing their chests. 

Total chaos broke out. Someone tripped, and they all went down like dominoes, legs shaking so badly that they couldn’t even stand. They were crawling backward, begging, “Please, don’t kill us. Take everything and just let us live.” 

Soon, a pile of junk, junk to Chloe, was dumped at her feet. Her voice is ice. “No cores?” 

The guys shook their heads miserably. “Jason had all the cores. You already took them from him yesterday.” 

“Pathetic. You’re all worthless,” Chloe spat. 

Emily, still wobbly, went through and frisked every guy. She scored a handful of cores, plus a couple more hidden on Jason’s body. 

Through the cracked door, Simone was watching everything and she got terrified. Earlier, she was shooting venomous looks. at Chloe and Emily, thinking, ‘If I’m gonna be these guys‘ toy, those two should suffer with me. But she never expected things to flip this hard. 

Chloe kicked the door open, slamming it right into Simone’s face. Blood gushed from her nose. 

“Well, well. Another little chick hiding out?” Chloe mocked. 

Simone dropped to her knees instantly, sobbing and begging. “Please don’t kill me. I don’t wanna die. I’m only nineteen.” 

Chloe didn’t even hesitate as she kicked Simone out of the way. “Get lost,” she snapped, stepping past Simone to poke through the bedding with her ice sword, looking for anything useful. 

The second Simone heard “get lost,” she was so relieved that she was practically weeping as she crawled away. 

After a quick search, Chloe came out with a handful of zombie cores. She tossed them to Emily and said, “Head to the tenth floor and find a spot to power up.” 

With everyone staring, Chloe moved in a blur, carving up the giant mutant cat and dragging it away without a second glance.
