Chapter 38Â
The hallway was a mess of severed limbs, headless bodies, and random heads, some with eyes frozen wide open in terror. A biting wind blew snowflakes through the corridor, raising goosebumps on Emily and Chloe’s skin.Â
Emily clung to her crossbow, trembling so hard that her teeth chattered. “Why are we even here, Chloe? Can’t we just get out of this creepy place?”Â
Chloe shot her a sharp look, and Emily immediately shut up.Â
“Let’s keep moving. Maybe there’s something useful we can grab,” Chloe said.Â
They headed straight to the 12th floor, the bloodiest and most horrifying part of the building. Emily’s heart hammered in her chest. She swallowed hard, her hands shaking around the crossbow.Â
“Stay here if you’re too scared,” Chloe offered.Â
“No way. I’m sticking with you,” Emily squeaked, ducking behind Chloe like a frightened chick, nervously eyeing every shadow,Â
Chloe moved quickly through the guys‘ dorm rooms. All she found were dirty sheets, smelly blankets, and old clothes that nobody wanted.Â
Even though it was mostly junk, Chloe didn’t want to leave empty–handed. She stuffed everything into her spiritual space, piling it up like trash.Â
By the time they finished, the sun was going down. The hallway grew dim and shadowy, making everything feel even spookier.Â
Finally, they made it back to the girls‘ dorm. They picked a random room on the third floor, tossed down their bedding, and got ready to crash. Emily collapsed onto the bed, looking totally wiped.Â
“You really are something, all scared like that,” Chloe said.Â
“Aren’t you scared at all?” Emily asked.Â
Chloe shrugged. “Dead bodies? See enough of them and you stop caring.” She pulled out three portable stoves, lit them up, and soon the room felt almost cozy. She threw some potatoes on the stove, then set a pot of water to boil.Â
“Look at you, sweating like crazy. Go clean up and get some rest,” Chloe told Emily.Â
The next morning, the sun finally broke through. Snow was melting, but somehow the air felt even colder.Â
Chloe stood on the balcony, watching the sunrise. There was no joy in her eyes, only a deep sadness. She murmured, “One heavy snow has wiped civilization right off the map. Maybe…”Â
“Chloe, the snow’s melting. It’s finally melting,” Emily exclaimed, her voice full of hope. But when she saw Chloe’s grim expression, she went quiet. Something felt off, like the whole world had fallen into an uneasy silence.Â
When they stepped out of the dorm, they realized the city had turned into a ghost town. Eerie silence everywhere. Not even a zombie in sight.Â
Sitting in the car, Emily got chills. No zombies in the alleys, none on the streets, something wasn’t right.Â
Then they saw a horde of zombies running in panic, like something terrifying was chasing them. The undead didn’t even pause as they rushed past.Â
Chloe hit the gas, but suddenly the whole car shook violently. Two level 2 Red–Eye Zombies had grabbed her car, with oneÂ

on the front, one on the back. They were shaking it like a toy.Â
In a flash, Chloe stored the Hummer in her spiritual space, leaving them both exposed.Â
Emily started to use her spirit power, but Chloe stopped her. “You’re not strong enough yet. Push it too far and you’ll hurt yourself.”Â
So Emily backed away and raised her crossbow, aiming carefully at one of the zombies‘ heads.Â
“Just distract one of them. Wait till I finish the other,” Chloe ordered.Â
“Got it,” Emily replied.Â
Chloe activated her wind power to zip behind one of the zombies. She went for the kill, but the zombie dodged at the last second. Chloe’s eyes narrowed.Â
She thought, ‘Fire and speed? A double–powered mutant zombie? Back in my previous life, I’d go years without seeing something like this. What kind of messed–up luck is this?‘Â
The mutant zombie shot a blast of fire toward her. Chloe dodged back, summoned an ice shield, and coated her body in a layer of ice.Â
Pushing through the flames, she swung her ice sword but missed. The zombie smacked the shield away, sending Chloe stumbling back.Â
Meanwhile, Emily fired her crossbow. The bolt hit the other zombie right between the eyes, but it only pissed it off.Â
The zombie charged at her wildly. Emily had no choice but to use her spirit power to fight back, but she overdid it and collapsed, mentally drained.Â
Chloe’s heart leaped into her throat as the mutant zombie rushed her in a blur, jaws wide open.Â
She gritted her teeth and thrust out her left arm. The zombie bit down hard, but at the same time, she pressed a sharp ice blade against its throat.Â
With a nasty tearing sound, the zombie dropped dead, with its head still attached to her arm, teeth dug deep into her skin as blood poured out.Â
Moving on instinct, Chloe snatched Emily back just as the other zombie lunged for her head.Â
A whirlwind caught the zombie’s fire blast and hurled it aside. An ice blade materialized and sliced clean through its throat. It was lucky for them that this one only had fire power.Â
Chloe’s blood was driving the nearby zombies crazy, but they were too scared of the mutant to come closer.Â
Chloe crushed the zombie’s skull with a hammer, pulled its teeth out of her arm, and dug out the zombie core. Barely staying on her feet, she dragged Emily toward the nearest department store.Â
The doors were locked tightly. Just as zombies started closing in, Chloe pulled Emily into her spiritual space and jumped inside.Â
The moment Emily entered, the big clock overhead spun wildly, showing time slipping away fast.Â
Bringing Emily in just wiped out all Chloe’s saved–up time.Â
Chloe rushed about 30 feet forward, grabbed Emily, and leaped back out. They reappeared inside the department store, away from the entrance.Â
Chloe sighed heavily and shot Emily a tired look. She thought, “Ten seconds in my space costs a whole hour of stored time.Â

Any longer and she would’ve been kicked out automaticallyÂ
Chloe scanned the store. Even in daylight, the place felt dark and unnervingly quiet. The first floor was full of luxury brands, cosmetics, and skincare. This stuff will be worth a fortune later, Chloe thought. ‘Better grab them now!Â
