Chapter 42Â
Chapter 42Â
‘That’s him,‘ Chloe thought.Â
Word was he had a powerful mutant beast with him. It must be this spotted leopard.Â
Chloe thought, ‘No, I need to leave now. This guy is way too dangerous.Â
Chloe swallowed her fear and forced a smile, speaking softly to the spotted leopard, “Hey, little leopard, your master needs to heal up. Let me help him.”Â
The spotted leopard gave her a sidelong look, let out a low, warning growl, and finally shifted to reveal half of the man’s body.Â
Chloe saw that the man’s fever had gone down. She took out a miracle pill and fed it to him. Then she carefully guided a stream of green healing energy into his body.Â
It was barely anything, just enough to buy her some time.Â
Finally, the spotted leopard let down its guard. That was when Chloe made her move.Â
Chloe sprang up in a flash, grabbed the man, and flung him deeper inside before the spotted leopard could even blink.Â
The spotted leopard went wild, darted forward, rolled across the floor, and just in time managed to catch the man with its belly.Â
It glared furiously at the stairway, but there wasn’t a trace of Chloe left.Â
Chloe finally made it up the stairs. She could still faintly hear the angry roars coming from the warehouse, and a shiver ran down her spine.Â
Chloe thought, ‘That was way too close.Â
With a world this big, there’s no way I’ll ever see him again… right?‘Â
But when Chloe glanced up, her gaze turned icy.Â
Emily was nowhere in the corner, and even the tent had vanished.Â
Chloe thought, ‘Emily would never do something like that.Â
“There’s only one explanation. Someone must’ve caught her, and she went up to the sixth floor to hide the entrance to theÂ
stairs.’Â
Seeing there were no signs of a struggle, Chloe figured Emily must’ve managed to lead them away. For now, things seemed safe.Â
Chloe headed up to the second floor, but none of it was any use in the apocalypse, so she kept going up to the third.Â
The third floor was stocked with brand–new winter gear. To avoid raising suspicion among the survivors upstairs, Chloe only took a few military coats, thermal underwear, and old–style padded jackets and trousers from the shops tucked away at the far end.Â
She didn’t even bother with the fancy brands.Â
She turned the corner and headed up to the fourth floor. Without even glancing inside, she continued straight upstairs.Â
It wasn’t until she reached the sixth floor that she finally saw the crowd of survivors Emily had mentioned, over a hundredÂ

people in total.Â
They were all gathered together, looking defeated and exhausted, split into two groups.Â
The moment Chloe appeared, everyone’s gaze instantly fixed on her, especially Caden Burke, the man leading the group, who narrowed his eyes and looked her up and down.Â
“C–Caden, isn’t that the chick we saw more than half a month ago? Didn’t she get blown up?” one of the guys stammered.Â
The stuttering guy, Abdiel, rubbed his eyes. “A–Am I seeing things?”Â
Caden narrowed his eyes. “Nope, you’re not seeing things. That’s her.”Â
Just then, Emily, who was being held by two guys, suddenly shook them off and stood up, her voice thick with tears.Â
“Chloe, are you okay?” she called out, rushing over and throwing her arms around Chloe.Â
Emily leaned in and whispered in Chloe’s ear, “Chloe, a powered human squad went downstairs earlier. They almost found the warehouse. I had to fool them into coming back.”Â
Then she burst out, crying, “I was so scared. I thought something had happened to you…”Â
She lowered her voice again. “There are two groups here, locked in a standoff. One is a squad of powered humans from the base, and the other is a group of survivors who banded together. One of your classmates is here too…”Â
Before Chloe could respond, a woman from the powered human squad walked over. She looked a little pale, but was her best to look as graceful as ever.Â
Sophie said, “Chloe, I’m so glad you’re okay. When I saw the car explode that day, it scared me half to death.”Â
Her eyes were red, like she was about to cry.Â

Chloe sneered. ‘What a coincidence, running into her here again. Why is it that wherever I go, she always manages to show up?‘ she thought.Â
“Sophie, sorry to let youÂ
down. I’m still alive,” Chloe said, her voice icy.Â
Sophie’s pretty face drained of color as she stared at Chloe in shock, stumbling back a few steps.Â
“Why would you say that to me, Chloe?” Sophie bit her lip so hard that it nearly bled, looking like she might break down and cry at any moment.Â
Just then, a man stepped forward from the crowd, catching Sophie before she could fall. He then shot Chloe a look filled with disappointment.Â
“Chloe, how did you end up like this?” Shawn asked, his voice heavy with regret.Â
Chloe raised an eyebrow. “Shawn, wherever Sophie goes, as her loyal simp, you are never far behind.”Â
“What nonsense are you spouting?” Shawn shot back, his face darkening with anger, but Sophie quickly grabbed his arm to hold him back.Â
Sophie reached out, trying to grab Chloe’s hand, but as soon as she felt how cold Chloe’s right hand was, Chloe quickly pulled away.Â
“Chloe, don’t get the wrong idea. There’s nothing going on between me and Shawn. He’s always said you’re the one he loves. Ever since your car exploded, he’s been beating himself up for not keeping you safe…” Sophie said, her voice shaky.Â
Emily’s jaw dropped, her eyes flicking between the three of them.Â

She thought, ‘Seriously? Chloe’s actually caught up in a love triangle?”Â
Emily gave Shawn a once–over with obvious dislike.Â
‘Sure, he’s easy on the eyes, but something’s off about him, Emily thought, rolling her eyes.Â
Emily was still debating whether to warn Chloe, but Chloe’s cold voice suddenly cut through the tension.Â
“A bitch and her loyal simp. Honestly, you two were made for each other. Just leave me out of your twisted love story, thanks,” Chloe said, her voice icy and merciless.Â
Then she grabbed Emily and walked back to where she’d been sitting before.Â
Shawn shouted after her angrily, “Chloe, you’ll regret this.”Â
Chloe just scoffed, not even bothering to look back.Â
Sophie panicked, grabbing Shawn’s arm with tear–filled eyes. “Shawn, please talk to her. Tell her we’re innocent. I don’t want to be the other woman. I don’t want her to think I’m stealing you.”Â
She couldn’t take her eyes off Chloe’s right wrist.Â
She’d just touched the bracelet.Â
Sophie thought, her mind racing, ‘Everything I saw in that dream must be real. Otherwise, how could Chloe have escaped that explosion so easily?Â
‘She must have that emerald bracelet with a spiritual space.Â
‘Back in my dream, that emerald bracelet with the spiritual space was supposed to be mine.Â
‘That bitch took what was rightfully mine, and now she dares to badmouth me in front of everyone? Damn it.‘Â
Even though she absolutely loathed Chloe, Sophie put on her best innocent act, giving Chloe a timid, fearful glance, as if she was scared Chloe might snap at her.Â
She quietly slipped over and sat down on the other side of Chloe, giving her a shy smile.Â
“Chloe, when we first arrived, the first floor of the mall was stocked with supplies. But when we went down just now, it was completely emptied out. Do you know what happened?” Sophie asked.Â
Chloe’s heart skipped a beat.Â
‘Is she trying to probe me? Could she have figured out the spiritual space?‘ Chloe thought, instantly on alert.Â
“I really don’t know. I jumped out just before the car exploded, and Emily pulled me to safety. We hid in the underground warehouse for a long time before coming back up. By the time we got out, the first floor was empty,” Chloe replied.Â
Caden shot Chloe a look, eyebrow raised.Â
“So you’re saying there’s an underground warehouse here? And it connects straight to the first floor?” His tone suddenly perked up.Â
‘If there’s a warehouse, there must be supplies,‘ he thought, eyes gleaming with excitement.Â
Chloe nodded, doing her best to look clueless. “Yeah, but the warehouse is totally empty. I have no idea why.”Â
