The leader wasn’t sure if he should believe Emily, and his gaze suddenly turned sharp. “Emily, didn’t you say you checked the first floor and found nothing?” 

Now it hit him that she’d seemed pretty nervous when they ran into each other earlier. He’d simply assumed Emily was scared at the time. 

“Abdiel, go downstairs and see if you can find the entrance to the warehouse,” Caden said. 

“Y–Yes, Caden.” Abdiel shuffled away, his oversized rear jiggling with every step. 

Emily forced a laugh, trying to play it cool. “Yeah, exactly. When we left, the first floor was like that. Maybe it was the other 

team?” 

She mumbled the last part under her breath, so the other powered human squad didn’t hear a thing. 

Her words managed to shift Caden’s suspicious gaze toward the other team. 

The leader of the other squad shot a vicious glare at Caden. “What the hell are you staring at? Careful, or I’ll rip your eyeballs 

out.” 

Caden glared back, unflinching. “Bring it on. Let’s see who gouges whose eyes out first.” 

At the same time, he whipped out a pistol, the cold barrel aimed straight at Damir Dunn, the chubby leader from the other 

group. 

Everyone sucked in a sharp breath, panic written all over their faces. Even Damir’s eyes flickered with uncertainty, and he shut up. 

Guns and bullets might not be very effective against zombies, but in a world where food, clothing, and medical supplies were all scarce, getting shot means one was as good as dead. 

When Chloe spotted the pistol, her gaze darkened and her sexy red lips pressed into a firm line. 

‘Holy crap, he’s got a gun,‘ Chloe thought, her nerves instantly on edge. 

Sophie suddenly slipped up beside Chloe, her voice a soft whisper in Chloe’s ear. “Want it?“. 

Her words were gentle, but to Chloe, they sent a chill down her spine. 

Sophie reached for Chloe’s right hand, but Chloe jerked her hand away again. 

Sophie’s face fell, and she struggled to hold back her anger, her voice thick with tears as she said angrily, “Why are you treating me like this, Chloe? What did I ever do to you?” 

Chloe came back to herself, her expression innocent and apologetic. “Sorry, I’m just not used to talking to strangers. If I made you uncomfortable, I apologize.” 

Sophie’s hands shook with anger, but when she caught a glimpse of the emerald bracelet half–hidden on Chloe’s wrist, she clenched her jaw and forced herself to swallow her fury. 

She glanced at Shawn, and he immediately moved closer to Chloe. “Chloe, everything before was my fault. Can you forgive 

me?” 

“No,” Chloe said, not missing a beat. 

The two of them kept up their little act, but their eyes couldn’t tear themselves away from the emerald bracelet on her wrist.

Chapter 43 

‘Do they really think I’m a fool?‘ Chloe thought to herself. 

“Chloe, are you still upset with me?” Shawn persisted, not willing to let it go. 

Emily couldn’t take it anymore and snapped, “Shawn, are you so shameless? She’s ignoring you, and you’re still pestering her. Can’t you take a hint? Have you got no self–respect?” 

Humiliated in front of everyone, even Shawn, who was usually thick–skinned, was pissed. “Emily, are you trying to get yourself killed? I’ll fucking kill you.” 

He was about to kick Emily, when suddenly it felt as if his brain had been struck. The pain was so intense that it seemed like his head was about to explode. Clutching his head, he writhed on the ground, groaning in agony. 

In the end, Caden snapped, his face stone cold. “Enough. If you idiots don’t shut up, then get the hell out.” 

Chloe pulled Emily down to sit beside her and gave her a quick shake of the head. 

They still had no idea what was really going on, so it was best to keep a low profile and not draw any attention to themselves. They settled into a corner, eyes scanning the room, and Emily leaned in, her voice barely above a whisper. 

“Chloe, the sixth floor used to be a food court. The storage room is still packed with ingredients. The department store upstairs has all its snacks and drinks piled in one corner,” said Emily. 

Following Emily’s gaze, Chloe spotted several powered humans standing guard over something covered with a black cloth. 

“That must be the supplies from upstairs, Chloe thought. 

“Most of the supplies are still up there, but it’s all raw ingredients, pasta, flour, frozen meat, along with various spices and daily necessities,” Emily whispered. 

Chloe quietly nodded. According to Emily, these people only hauled down the ready–to–eat food. Everything else was still stashed upstairs on the sixth floor. 

While both sides were busy staring each other down, Chloe wondered if she should sneak out and check the seventh floor. 

Chloe was just about to make a move when Sophie piped up again. 

“Chloe, where are you going?” Sophie called out. 

Chloe didn’t even look back. She just grabbed Emily and found a new spot to sit, but Sophie was like a leech, trailing right behind them. 

“Chloe, that bracelet on your wrist is gorgeous. Show it to me,” Sophie said, her voice sugary sweet but her eyes practically glued to the emerald bracelet. 

Before Chloe could react, Sophie just reached out and tried to yank the emerald bracelet right off her wrist. 

Chloe smirked, her lips twisting with sarcasm. ‘I knew she’d crack sooner or later, she thought.

it?” Chloe said, her lips curling into a mocking smirk. 

She stretched out her arm, showing off the shimmering emerald bracelet on her wrist, waving it teasingly right in front of Sophie. 

This was just something she’d grabbed from the jewelry shop. The real bracelet had turned into a birthmark on her wrist, hidden from everyone’s eyes. 

Sophie’s eyes brimmed with excitement, her eyes going red as she nearly teared up. “You really mean it? You’ll give it to me?”

“Of course… not,” Chloe replied, her tone dripping with sarcasm. 

“You’re messing with me?” Sophie shot up, her eyes round and blazing. 

Everyone turned to stare, confusion flickering across their faces. 

Chloe just shrugged, smirking. “Obviously.” 

Sophie was so pissed that her chest was heaving, and not even that thick down jacket could hide the dramatic waves underneath. 

Suddenly, she raised her voice, loud enough for everyone to hear. “When we first got here, there was a lot of stuff on the first floor, but after you showed up, it was all gone. Why is that?” 

She glanced around at everyone, and then cranked her voice 

up even 

higher. 

“Don’t tell me you’ve got something good stashed on you?” Sophie sneered. 

Then she gave Chloe a full once–over, only now realizing that Chloe was dressed in nothing but a tracksuit. She’d been so obsessed with figuring out how to get her hands on that emerald bracelet, she hadn’t even noticed before. 

Her eyes grew greedy as she stared at the emerald bracelet. ‘That treasure from my dream must really be magical. Otherwise, how could she not feel cold?‘ Sophie thought. 

Sophie put on a show of surprise, pointing at Chloe’s outfit and raising her voice. “It’s freezing. How come you’re just wearing a tracksuit? Don’t tell me you’ve got some magic item stashed on you? 

“We’re all survivors here. If you’ve got something good, don’t think you can hog it all for yourself. Everyone gets a cut if they see it.” 

With those words, every head in the room whipped around to stare at Chloe, even Caden looking frown. 

Chloe locked eyes with Sophie, a faint, mocking smile curling at the corner of her lips.

“I’m not bothered by the cold. I’m an ice–powered human, you know. Didn’t you realize ice–powered humans are basically walking freezers?” Chloe said, her voice laced with sarcasm. 

She suddenly widened her eyes in feigned surprise, covering her mouth as she shot Sophie a smile that was all insincere apology. 

“Oops, my bad. You’re just a regular person, huh? No wonder you wouldn’t get what it’s like to have powers,” Chloe said. 

She really put emphasis on “regular person“, making sure everyone caught the shade she was throwing. 

Sophie stared in utter disbelief, her jaw clenched so tightly that it seemed her teeth might shatter. Her jealousy.
