The Day Love Betrayed Me and Never the Plan 45

Chapter 45

At the corner, Emily moved quietly up to the seventh floor.

She turned and whispered. Chloe, I’ll keep watch here. Try to be quick.”

I have a bad feeling about the first floor. Let’s go together, just in case,Chloe said.

Emily closed her eyes, sensed the area, and then listened intently. A puzzled look crossed her face. There’s nothing on the first floor.”

Tonight won’t be quiet. Let’s hurry.” Chloe insisted.

They quickly made their way up. The seventh floor was a large supermarket. Most of the food had already been taken by others, but plenty still remained.

Chloe only gathered some inconspicuous items.

Chloe, over here. There’s a whole lot of pasta and flour here,” Emily called out.

In the grain section, various types of pasta were stacked. Since it was all raw, the survivors hadn’t taken any.

We can’t take these,Chloe said. She didn’t want to reveal she had a spiritual space.

Look here.Emily opened the cabinet under the sacks of pasta. It was packed with even more pasta and flour.

Chloe gave her a thumbsup. No wonder you’re a spiritpowered human.”

It was the first time Emily had been praised. Her cheeks flushed. Finally, she could contribute.

Suddenly, Emily’s expression twisted. The first floor. A huge wave of mutated spiders just rushed in from outside.”

Her face shifted from worry to sheer terror.

How many?Chloe froze.

I have no idea. Thousands, and maybe tens of thousands. They’re still pouring in, and they’re climbing to the second floor. They’re not stopping. They’re coming higher,Emily stammered, panic rising in her voice.

They rushed down to the sixth floor. Everyone was still asleep. Caden was shaken awake, his eyes red and bleary. He looked ready to snap, but when he saw Chloe, he swallowed his anger.

What’s going on?he muttered.

Trouble downstairs. Wake everyone up. We need to get ready to fight,Chloe said urgently.

What?Caden scrambled out of bed just as Abdiel ran up from downstairs, breathless and terrified.

CCadenssomething’s wrong. Spiders. So many spiders,he stammered.

His eyes were wide with fear, and he reeked of urine.

Abdiel was so loud that most survivors jolted awake. The timid ones huddled back, scared stiff.

Many looked dismissive. Just spiders? What’s there to be afraid of? Haven’t you seen spiders before?”

Seriously, what a fuss, someone grumbled, annoyed at being woken up.

Chapter 45

One guy sneered, You’re supposed to be powered humans, and you’re scared of spiders? Bunch of cowards.”

Chloe smirked coldly. These survivors probably hadn’t seen a mutated insect yet. They were way worse than zombies.

Damir stood up, squinted at Abdiel, and burst out laughing. Abdiel, really? A few spiders and you’re pissing yourself? And you call yourselves powered humans?”

The survivors behind him all laughed.

To them, spiders were just tiny bugs no bigger than a fingernail.

Seeing Abdiel being mocked, Caden shot the crowd a look that was halfsmirk, halfglare.

Abdiel was honest. He wouldn’t make something up.

They were part of the powered human squad from the base, unlike Damir’s group, who knew nothing about real danger.

Caden said, Damir, since you’re so confident, we’ll leave the spiders to you guys.”

No problem,Damir laughed and then glanced at Chloe. Hey sweetheart, why not stick with me? Stay with that coward Caden and you’ll starve sooner or later,he said, giving her a sleazy look.

Chloe shot him a cold glare, barely holding back her urge to kill him. Survive first, and then talk, she sneered.

Damir shouted, Everyone, grab your weapons.”

With that, over sixty survivors marched down from the sixth floor, looking tough and confident.

They’d been hiding here since the apocalypse and had never seen a mutated insect, so they strutted down to the third floor like they owned the place.

But then, a tsunami of red spiders crashed in, millions of them. Wherever they went, the place was covered in webs.

Fistsized spiders scurried at lightning speed, but one stood out, a massive spider over six feet tall, like a giant among dwarfs.

It seemed to catch the scent of humans and slowly lifted its head, locking eyes with Damir. Its mouth split open, and green slime oozed from the corners.

The slime hit the floor, and within seconds, the marble corroded, leaving a nasty pit.

Damir’s swagger vanished. Faced with millions of writhing spiders, plus that giant one, it felt like his heart was being squeezed.

Help!a woman shrieked.

Her scream shattered the tense standoff.

Everyone panicked and scrambled back upstairs.

They’d come down cocky, but now they were fleeing in total chaos.

Anyone who tripped or moved too slowly got trampled as others climbed over them.

The giant spider shot a web from its mouth, snagging the last person around the waist and trapping him tightly.

The guy screamed as the web yanked him straight into the spider’s jaws. His cry cut off as he vanished into its maw.

Damir was the leader and stood in front, but now he was lagging behind everyone else.

He saw the spider devouring the guy alive, and his knees nearly buckled.

The giant spider locked eyes with him, and his legs shook so badly that his machete trembled in his hand.

DDon’t come any closer,he stammered.

A web shot straight at him. Damir panicked, threw up an earthen wall, and shoved someone in front of him as a human shield.

The web blasted through the wall, speared the man’s chest, wrapped him up, and hurled him into the writhing spider

swarm.

Instantly, he was buried under a horde of fistsized red spiders.

Damir, help me.Lily, who always thought she was special and had stuck close to Damir, ended up at the back as she tried to

escape.

She started bawling, clutching Damir’s arm and refusing to let go.

Once the spiders tasted human flesh, they went into a frenzy, attacking with even more savage force.

Their webs might not have been as deadly as the Spider King’s, but they were insanely sticky. With so many spiders piling on, not even a scrap of bone was left.

Damir, slowed down by Lily, viciously flung her off. Get the hell off me.”

Lily was sent flying, landing right in front of the endless spider swarm.

Lily, run,her mom, Donna Caldwell, shouted, reaching out to pull her up. But Lily panicked and shoved Donna back instead.

The Spider King shot out a web, wrapped Donna up, and gulped her down whole.

It spat webs at insane speed, never missing, like a frog snapping up flies.

The tables had turned completely. Humans were nothing but prey now.

Damir desperately shoved his way up, grabbing anyone in front and hurling them behind just to save his own skin.

Each time someone was tossed to the spiders, the swarm would stop for a split second, and then keep charging.
