The Day Love Betrayed Me and Never the Plan 49

The mutant Spider King kept backing away. After all, it was a third–level mutant. Its speed and power were nothing to scoff at. 

It quickly spun a thick web, trapping the leading mutant birds and stripping them of the ability to fight. 

Countless smaller spiders crawled over the Spider King’s body and swarmed the birds, devouring them whole. 

A horde of mutated rats scurried up, gnawing on anything they could reach. 

The people fighting over zombie cores instantly paled, dropped everything, and bolted for the door. Once everyone was inside, Chloe sealed the entrance with a thick layer of ice. 

Caden, gasping for breath, handed all the cores he’d gathered to Chloe. 

“You need to absorb these and regain your strength,” he urged. 

He realized Chloe’s abilities far surpassed everyone else’s. Their only chance of survival was sticking with her. 

Chloe didn’t move. Emily quickly stuffed all the cores into her backpack and then glanced at Damir. 

Damir hesitated for a moment before decisively tossing his bundle over as well. 

“It’s a crisis right now, so I’ll hold onto these for now. Once the mutant beasts are gone, you can take whatever you want, except the Spider King’s core,” Chloe said. 

Everyone gave bitter smiles, thinking, ‘Who cares about the Spider King’s core? We might not even live to see 

tomorrow.‘ 

The room was sealed off by thick ice walls, so no one knew what was happening outside. Every so often, screams echoed through the air, sending chills down everyone’s spines. 

Damir pressed his face against the ice, trying to see outside. Suddenly, he came face–to–face with a pair of basketball–sized eyes. He staggered back in terror and crashed to the floor, scrambling backward in panic. 

“What happened?” Caden asked, moving closer out of curiosity. But as soon as he saw what was outside, a jolt of pure terror shot through him. 

Staring back was a giant toad, nearly six feet tall, with massive milky–white eyes, no pupils, just blank and eerie. 

Its dark brown body was covered in bulging pustules oozing slime. Its tongue could stretch several feet, covered in nasty spikes. 

Even Chloe couldn’t help but step back. 

She wondered, ‘Another third–level mutant beast! What’s going on? Why are there so many high–level mutant 

beasts all of a sudden?‘

Fortunately, the mutant beasts were busy tearing each other apart. To them, humans were just insignificant bugs. 

Only the last one standing would get to enjoy the feast, including all these tasty humans. 

Right now, the Spider King led its swarm in an all–out brawl with the mutant birds overhead, while a horde of rats clashed with the giant mutant toad. 

Everyone watched, terrified, through the clear ice wall. 

“Chloe, how is there a toad out there in this freezing weather?” Emily blurted, her voice shaking. 

Chloe just shook her head. She had no idea either. 

Finally, the chaos died down. 

The mutant rats tore through the endless spider swarm but perished together with the birds above. 

In the end, only the mutant toad remained. 

It rolled its white eyes, fixing its gaze on the ice wall. Suddenly, it lashed out its tongue, which stuck to the ice for a few seconds in the freezing cold. 

Then, in a flash, the wall shattered, leaving everyone exposed to the mutant toad’s hungry stare. 

Its tongue shot out like lightning, snatching one of the powered humans standing next to Damir and swallowing him whole. 

The mutant toad let out a satisfied sound. 

“Chloe, what do we do?” Shawn, a grown man, hid behind Chloe like a coward. 

With everyone watching in disbelief, Shawn suddenly shoved Chloe forward, his eyes filled with venom. “Go to hell.” 

Chloe was forced right in front of the mutant toad. It instantly lashed out with its tongue, trying to snatch her. 

But Chloe reacted fast, rolling away and leaving Shawn completely exposed. 

Shawn’s face went ghostly with terror. Luckily, the mutant toad only snagged his putter jacket. He tore it off and tumbled toward the stairs, not caring which way he went. 

As Chloe dodged, an ice sword flashed into her hand. Without hesitation, she slashed fiercely at the mutant toad’s tongue. 

With a sickening squelch, the tongue was sliced clean in two. Blood sprayed through the air, freezing into crimson shards before hitting the ground. 

The mutant toad let out a grating screech, its eyes burning with fury as it glared at Chloe, itching to crush this pesky human.

Chloe knew she couldn’t win head–on, so she used her wind power to keep dodging, barely staying out of reach. 

Without its tongue, the mutant toad had lost its best weapon. It was still fast, but Chloe always slipped away just in time. 

She stole a glance at her watch, only an hour left until midnight. 

Just then, the dense webs in the corner rustled, and a flood of spiders poured out. To everyone’s shock, even more mutant rats appeared in the hallway, seemingly out of nowhere. 

As if on cue, they all swarmed toward the humans at once. 

Maybe, to them, humans were just tasty snacks and if they didn’t grab some now, someone else would. 

“No. Stay away. Get back,” someone in the crowd screamed. 

Panic erupted. Most powers were still too weak, and people were quickly overwhelmed. 

“Chloe, help me,” Sophie screamed desperately. 

Chloe was surrounded by three mutant beasts. She could barely fend for herself. 

Suddenly, Dustin threw a punch, taking out a mutant beast next to him. 

His bold move fired everyone up. They all rushed in, ready to fight for their lives. 

Someone shouted, “Come on. We’re dead either way. Take one down, and it’s worth it. Take two, and you’re ahead.” 

The other agreed, “Hell yeah, let’s do this.” 

Chloe was forced into a corner, cut off from her team. A swarm of mutant beasts packed the space between 

them. She was on her own. 

Just as the Spider King, Rat King, and giant mutant toad all lunged at her at once, Chloe vanished without a 

trace. 

When she reappeared, she was behind them, unleashing a storm of wind blades aimed at their heads. 

The blades were powerful, leaving the beasts badly injured, but it only sent them into a frenzy. 

The mutant toad struck first, whipping out its bloody tongue and snagging Chloe around the waist, yanking her off the ground. 

Chloe didn’t miss a beat. She shoved the nozzle of her makeshift gasoline squirter straight into the mutant toad’s mouth and flicked a lit match in after it. 

The whole building shook with a deafening blast as the mutant toad exploded into pieces, spraying pus everywhere like deadly acid rain.

Anything it landed on sizzled and melted instantly. 

Chloe was closest to the blast. Instinctively, a layer of ice formed around her as a shield, and she raised her physical barrier at the same time. 

Even so, the explosion slammed into her, sending her flying several feet. She hit the ground hard, coughing up blood. 

Her shield couldn’t cover her legs. The mutant toad’s corrosive slime splattered across them, instantly eating through flesh and leaving massive acid burns. 

The Spider King and Rat King shot nervous glances at the mutant toad’s remains, and then fixed fearful eyes on Chloe, hesitating. 

After a moment, they began to creep forward, still wary. 

Chloe tried to push herself up, but her limbs felt useless, her whole body falling apart. The stabbing pain in her legs was so intense that cold sweat drenched her face. 

Just as she wondered if she should escape into her spiritual space, a thick green vine shot out from the distance, wrapped tightly around her waist, and dragged her past the mutant beasts, pulling her straight into the room.
