As for those powered humans, no one knew what they were really thinking, trying to help, or just looking for some expendable pawns. 

Just then, Frank walked over. He was tall and burly, with a fierce look on his face that made it clear he wasn’t someone you wanted to mess with. 

Before he could get too close, the powered human with the gun fired a warning shot. “Stop right there.” 

Frank froze, putting on a fawning smile. “Hey, uh, sir, we’ve got our own ride. Mind if we tag along behind you?” 

“Are you a powered human?” the guy with the gun asked. 

Frank nodded. “Yeah, I’m a second–level powered human, earth–type and strength–type.” 

The guy with the gun looked surprised for a second, then his face lit up with excitement. Even his tone softened. 

“You’re a second–level powered human with two abilities?” he asked. 

Frank nodded again. 

He always believed that if one wanted respect, one had to show their true strength and abilities. 

Chloe liked to play dumb to fool others, so he’d just be the shield for her. 

The armed powered humans whispered among themselves for a moment, then one of them turned to Frank and said, “Wait here for a sec.” 

Then they headed for the center of the convoy. 

Parked in the center was a seriously fancy RV. One of the guys hopped in and soon came back out with a middle–aged man following behind. 

Short and sharp, with perfectly parted hair and a sharp suit, the middle–aged man looked arrogant and serious. 

He gave Frank a quick once–over. “So, you’re a second–level powered human with two abilities?” 

Frank nodded, keeping it cool. 

The man nodded, finally cracking a real smile. 

“Name’s Wade Kingston. We’d be honored to have you join our powered human squad,” he said. 

Frank frowned. Just like Chloe said, this squad was definitely not military. 

“I’m Frank Hunter,” he introduced himself. 

After their handshake, Wade flashed a friendly grin. “On behalf of the Kingston Awakened Group, I’m inviting you to join 

us.” 

Frank was about to turn them down, but then he saw snipers surrounding him. He felt a chill run down his spine. 

It seemed that this was mandatory. 

“Fine, but I’ve got two female friends. I want to stay with them,” he said. 

Emily, hiding in the alley, glared and spat out, “Son of a bitch. Looks like Frank just won’t leave us alone.”

Since they were tagged as powered humans‘ friends, Emily and Chloe got ushered onto the main bus in the middle of the 

convoy. 

Thanks to Frank’s stubbornness, all three of them got to ride together. The bus was now packed with four armed snipers and four other powered humans. 

Frank sat right in front of Chloe, glancing back at her with a grin. 

“See how good I am to you two? We didn’t have to hand over a single thing, and we still got the prime spot in the convoy. All because of me,” he said, showing off. 

Emily smacked him, cheeks puffed out in annoyance. “Like I’d ever believe you.” 

Frank didn’t get mad. He shot Chloe a sly look and whispered so only she could hear. 

“Boss, you weren’t just trying to get rid of me and sneak off, were you?” he teased. 

Chloe’s mouth twitched. “No.” 

Then she closed her eyes, clearly frustrated. 

‘This guy looks all rough and burly, but he’s actually pretty sharp, sly as a fox,‘ Chloe thought. 

Frank chuckled and patted his chest, “Good, I thought you were gonna ditch me. 

Emily’s eyes went wide, and she smacked him on the head again. “Frank, you totally did this on purpose.” 

He’d purposely announced he was a powered human, using those snipers to make sure they couldn’t shake him off halfway. 

‘What a sneaky jerk, Emily thought. 

Ten minutes flew by, and soon the armed guy outside shouted for everyone to hear. “Those who handed over supplies get first pick of the vehicles. If you didn’t, you’re stuck in the front or back buses. Powered humans get priority.” 

Two more minutes passed, and as the lead vehicle started up, all the others followed suit, engines roaring to life. 

As the convoy pulled away, the slow, the disabled, and those weighed down with bags and bedding chased after the buses. shouting desperately. 

“Stop. Wait. I’m not on yet.” 

“Please, stop.” 

But the buses just sped by without a second glance. 

Those survivors were abandoned for good in Hevenseale. 

As soon as the vehicles roared to life, zombies flooded in like a tidal wave, cutting off every way out. 

Most got crushed beneath the wheels, but some second–level zombies scrambled up the sides of the buses, their grayish heads dangling outside the windows, sending the passengers inside into a panic. 

Chloe and Emily sat together, both with their eyes closed, just trying to catch a break. 

Suddenly, an old lady with white hair nudged Chloe’s shoulder. 

“Hey girl, I’m starving. Got anything to eat?” the old lady said. 

She looked like she hadn’t eaten in ages; her face was yellow and skinny, and her whole body seemed frail and weak.

Chloe just shot her a quick, indifferent glance, then closed her eyes again. 

They were sitting right in the middle of the bus, the safest spot. For this old lady to be here, she either had some supplies or was with a powered human. 

Either way, there was no way she hadn’t eaten for days. 

When Chloe didn’t answer, the old lady kept at it. “You look like such a kind girl. You wouldn’t just sit by and watch an old lady starve, right?” 

She shot a sneaky look at the black backpack by Chloe’s feet, her eyes glinting with greed. 

It was stuffed full, no doubt loaded with supplies. 

After all that begging and whining, Chloe still didn’t give her the time of day. 

She’d nearly talked herself dry, but Chloe just kept sleeping, acting like she hadn’t heard a word. 

The old lady rushed over, wailed, and collapsed right next to Chloe. 

“Please, girl, have some mercy and give me just a little food. Everyone’s got elderly at home. You wouldn’t want your own parents out here begging and being left empty–handed, would you?” she pleaded. 

Chloe was fed up. She replied coldly, “I don’t have any elderly at home, and I don’t have any food for you.” 

The old lady glanced hungrily at the backpack by Chloe’s feet. “I don’t believe you Come on, open it up. I bet you’ve got food in there.” 

Chloe suddenly gave a cold, mocking smile, finally turning a chilly stare on the old lady collapsing before her. 

“Why should I let you look through my bag?” she replied flatly.

Seeing Chloe wasn’t giving in, the old lady lost her patience. She sprang to her feet and reached straight for the black backpack. 

“You’re so heartless. There’s so much food in your bag. Why won’t you share even a little?” she screeched. 

Just a moment ago, she’d seemed weak and barely able to stand, but now her face was fierce, and her grip was surprisingly strong, almost like a middle–aged woman. 

No one on the bus tried to help. Some watched for entertainment, some looked excited, a few were greedy, but most just didn’t care. 

Everyone was waiting to see if the old lady could grab the backpack; maybe then they’d get a piece of the loot, too.
