Chapter 61Â
Everyone was just watching, waiting for something to happen.Â

If Chloe handed the food to the old lady, the whole crowd would swarm in, begging for food, or just straight up try to grabÂ
- it.Â
After surviving more than a month in this brutal weather and the apocalypse, nobody’s hands were clean.Â
Just as the crowd was getting all riled up, there was a sickening crack. Chloe wrenched the old lady’s wrist until it broke, and she screamed.Â
“You bitch, are you trying to get yourself killed? My son’s a powered human, and he’s in the next car. I’ll have him kill you,” she shrieked.Â
As soon as everyone heard that the old lady’s son was a powered human, they were scared out of their wits.Â
They couldn’t help but feel relieved they hadn’t tried anything.Â
Chloe curled her lips into a cold smirk. “A powered human, huh? Well, my friend’s a powered human, too, and he’s in this bus.”Â
She shot a look at Frank sitting up front, enjoying the show. “Isn’t that right, Frank?”Â
Frank nodded, shooting a deadly glare at the old lady. “You mess with my friend, and I’ll end you.”Â
She hit the floor, screaming her head off, “My son’s a powered human too. If you kill me, he’ll come for you.”Â
Her screaming attracted even more zombies nearby. The guy with the sniper rifle looked pissed and shouted, “Get back to your seat. Make another sound, and I’ll toss you out to the zombies.”Â
The old lady was obviously scared of the guys with guns. She pulled her head in, spat in Chloe’s direction, and snarled, “JustÂ
wait.”Â
As she was leaving, someone slyly stuck out a leg and tripped her. She went down hard, face–first, and when she scrambled up, blood was streaming from her nose.Â
“You bitch,” the old lady spat.Â
Just as she tried to grab Chloe, one of the guys with a gun sent her flying with a brutal kick, and she finally shut up.Â
If this kind of mess had happened to a regular person, they’d have been dead meat ages ago.Â
The only reason the guys with guns didn’t finish her off was that she kept shouting about her son being a powered human; they were just cutting her some slack for his sake.Â
There wasn’t a single empty seat on the bus, but the place was so quiet it was almost creepy. Faces were drained of color, and whenever someone glanced out the window, you could see the fear in their eyes.Â
Every now and then, people couldn’t help but steal greedy looks at the backpack sitting by Chloe’s feet.Â
The bus was inching forward, barely making any progress. Most of the road ahead was blocked by wrecked cars, and on top of that, zombies were lurking around, making things even worse.Â
Every so often, one of the armed guys would take turns getting off the bus to clear away the debris.Â
Even after an entire day, they still hadn’t managed to leave Hevenscale.Â

As night fell, the group pulled up to a luxury villa district. The guys with guns started hunting for survivors and searching for loot.Â
This was a posh neighborhood, barely any people, and even fewer zombies, thank god.Â
Chloe, Emily, and Frank traded looks. Emily’s power was pretty unique, so she took the first night watch while Chloe and Frank crashed for some sleep.Â
Frank would take over the watch for the second half of the night.Â
Since Chloe was the strongest out of the three, she had to get enough rest so she could go all out when things got real.Â
Just as dawn was breaking, the guys with sniper rifles finally returned, escorting a group of survivors behind them.Â
Each one looked exhausted and haggard, faces weathered by the apocalypse. It had only been a month, but everyone was already gaunt and skeletal.Â
The bus was packed to the brim, so the newcomers had to squeeze in wherever there was space.Â
Some ended up sitting right in the aisle.Â
Chloe opened her eyes and told Frank to get some sleep.Â
She cast a casual glance outside the bus, and in that moment, spotted a few familiar faces.Â
‘Figures. Enemies really do have a way of showing up when you least expect them; Chloe thought. ‘Those guys are still alive?”Â
Outside the bus, Sam was being driven back with his entire family trailing behind him.Â
“Move it. This bus is reserved for the families of powered humans. Go find a seat in the back,” one of the armed men barked.Â
Sam stumbled as he was shoved, and Vanessa stepped forward, her voice shaking. “Please, officer, let us on this bus.”Â
She was crying so prettily that it could melt anyone’s heart.Â
The guy with the gun hesitated for a moment. He wasn’t some tough soldier. He was just a security guard pushing fifty, who’d never even had a shot at marriage.Â
He’d never even touched a woman in his life.Â
When he saw Vanessa looking all helpless and throwing flirty glances his way, his self–control snapped instantly.Â
“Alright, but,” The guy’s eyes gleamed with desire as he spoke.Â
His gaze lingered on Vanessa, then shifted to Rosalie, who was shrinking behind Sam.Â
Rosalie felt a chill run down her spine under his blatant stare, pressing herself closer to Sam, shaking with fear.Â
The armed man wasn’t interested in her at all. ‘Why bother with a kid who hasn’t even grown up yet, when there’s a mature woman with real allure right here?‘ he thought.Â
“You can get on, but you have to sleep with me,” he said, his voice dripping with sleaze.Â
Vanessa hesitated, disgust flickering in her eyes as she stared at the man’s sleazy face.Â
The man was clearly losing patience. He started shoving them, snapping, “If you haven’t handed over any supplies, get to the last bus already.”Â
Seeing Vanessa still hesitating, Sam hurriedly shoved her, pushing her right into the arms of the armed powered human.Â

He bowed and groveled, all dignity gone. “Officer, this is my wife. Do whatever you want with her. I’m begging you just let me on this bus.”Â
Vanessa was floored by how Sam just bowed, groveling on the ground like a total loser.Â
She’d been ready to take one for the team, but she never thought Sam would actually throw her under the bus like that. Rage shot through her instantly.Â
Her eyes blazed with fury.Â
“Sam, what the hell is wrong with you? I’m your wife,” Vanessa yelled.Â
Sam bowed in front of Vanessa, clutching her hands, tears streaming down his face.Â
“Honey, please, you’ve got to save our whole family. If we get stuck on that last bus, we’re as good as dead. Rosalie and Niko are just little kids. How can you just let that happen?” he cried.Â
Niko was holding onto his grandma for dear life, crying his lungs out in terror. “Mommy, I’m scared,” he wailed.Â
Rosalie bit her lip and lowered her head, staying silent.Â
‘If Mom goes, does that mean I’m off the hook?‘ Rosalie thought, trying to comfort herself.Â
‘She was the mistress who took over anyway. Sleeping with one guy or ten doesn’t make a difference for her. It’s all the same,‘ Rosalie told herself, feeling numb.Â
‘Not like me. I’m still a virgin, never even had a boyfriend, she reminded herself.Â
Even Kiera, who was usually all bluster and attitude, kept her mouth shut for once, basically giving her silent approval.Â
Vanessa felt ice in her veins. She latched onto the old guy, putting on her best seductive act, her voice syrupy and fake.Â
“Officer, why don’t we head over to the villa? I promise I’ll blow your mind,” she purred.Â
As soon as she said that, the old man with the sniper rifle lit up as he’d just hit the jackpot, scooped her up, and strutted off toward the villa.Â
Sam and his family finally managed to squeeze onto the bus, with Kiera trailing behind. Now that the bitch was gone, Kiera finally let loose with her nasty ranting.Â
“Didn’t I tell you she was a shameless whore? You never believed me. Look at her. She can’t wait to jump into bed with some other guy. Pathetic,” Kiera spat.Â
Rosalie’s eyes shimmered with tears as she looked up. “Grandma, Mom only did it to save us.”Â
