Chapter 75Â
After saying that, the old man’s indifferent gaze swept over the three of them, his eyes meeting Chloe’s in the air for past a second before he looked away.Â
His tongue unconsciously ran over his cracked lips. Even though he was smiling, Chloe couldn’t help but feel a shiver run down her spine. But he was just a regular guy.Â
Now that she thought about it, there was something off about every corner of this village.Â
It was right next to the highway, packed with abandoned cars and roaming zombies, but it was like none of that even fazed the villagers. And they were almost suspiciously friendly to outsiders.Â
When they got to the second floor, the old man opened a door and said, “This used to be my daughter’s room, but she had died. Hope that’s not a problem for you.”Â
Emily quickly replied, “Not at all. We’re really grateful you’re letting us stay.”Â
“Glad you don’t mind,” the old man said.Â
Inside, the room was pretty basic, but it was obvious that it was a girl’s space.Â
Emily gave an approving nod, just about to say something, when suddenly the door clicked shut and locked behind them. “Why are you locking the door?” Emily asked.Â
The old man called from outside, “It’s not safe at night.” Then his footsteps clattered down the stairs.Â
Emily was just about to say something when Chloe grabbed her arm and gave her a quick shake of the head. She leaned in and whispered in Emily’s ear, “Have you really not noticed anything strange about this village?”Â
Emily shook her head. “No, I’m sure everyone here is just living, breathing humans. No supernatural power.”Â
Chloe thought for a moment, still feeling uneasy. “You go get some sleep. I’ll keep watch tonight.”Â
“Alright, I’ll take over for the second half of the night,” Emily replied. She was absolutely wiped out today. She flopped onto the soft bed and was out like a light in seconds.Â
Chloe walked over to the bed and looked out through the white curtains, staring into the distance. Outside, there wasn’t a single glimmer of light. It was so dark that she couldn’t even see a shadow outside.Â
But she just couldn’t shake the weird feeling that someone, or something, was watching her.Â
She stared out at the yard, and through the endless darkness, it was like her gaze met something lurking out there. Instantly. a chill ran down her spine, and goosebumps prickled her skin.Â
She blinked, but still saw nothing, like it was just her imagination, because that unsettling feeling of being watched was gone.Â
She sat down and let her mind slip into her spiritual space. To her frustration, she found that the milky–white core of the mutated tiger had been completely absorbed by spiritual space.Â
All the cores she’d collected these past few days were nothing but a pile of dark gray dust. But that milky–white core turned out to be a real game–changer for her. Her spiritual space had just leveled up.Â
Before, the ground was jam–packed with cars and all the supplies Chloe had hauled out of Hevenseale. There was barely any room to move. Now, everything was spread out everywhere.Â
The ground had grown at least ten times bigger. And when Chloe looked closer, she realized it wasn’t just gravel and rocks anymore. It was real earth. Sure, it was so barren that she couldn’t grow a weed, but Chloe was absolutely over the moon.Â
Chapter 75Â
‘Could it be that someday, when my spiritual space levels up enough, I’ll actually be able to grow crops herer ChloeÂ
wondered, her heart pounding with excitement. ‘Guess I’ll have to slay more zombies and collect more emeralds to upgrade my spiritual space.Â
After locking the door, the old man made his way downstairs. He came face–to–face with his two sons and the frail old woman. They stared at him, eyes wide and almost buzzing with excitement. None of them looked the least bit fired.Â
“So, how did it go?” the old woman asked, stepping forward and rubbing her hands together as soon as the old man reached the bottom of the stairs.Â
The old man was clearly in high spirits, and for once, he actually bothered to reply to the old woman. “No one got suspicious.”Â
Both young men relaxed instantly. “That’s good.”Â
Their eyes were glued to the table, where a can of meat and two roast chickens sat waiting. Even though the food was frozen solid, harder than stone, that didn’t stop them from craving it.Â
“Dad, how about we crack open the can and dig in?” Andy said, practically drooling. He couldn’t help licking his lips. After eating nothing but human meat for so long, he was totally fed up with it.Â
“Alright, you all did well today. Let’s treat ourselves to something nice,” the old man said.Â
It took the whole family forever, but they finally wrestled the can of meat open.Â
The old woman hurried over, practically drooling. “It’s been ages since I had canned food. Can I just have a taste? Just a lick. I promise I won’t eat any.”Â
The old man shot her a glare and then dragged a box out from under the table. It was stuffed full of hacked–up chunks of meat. He grabbed a piece and shoved it at her, sounding annoyed. “Just take it and get lost.”Â
The old woman bit her lip, frustration written all over her face, but in the end, she didn’t dare say a word.Â
She hunched over in the corner, clutching the chunk of meat, and started gnawing away at it. Well, at least she managed to get some food in her belly today.Â
Meanwhile, upstairs, Emily wasn’t really asleep. She filled Chloe in on everything she heard from the family downstairs.Â
“Chloe, do you think there’s something wrong with them?” Emily whispered.Â
“No,” Chloe replied.Â
Before Emily could even start to relax, Chloe added, “It’s the whole village that’s got something wrong with it.”Â
After spending so long scraping by at death’s door, Chloe’s danger radar was always on high alert.Â
It was the dead of night. The north wind howled, snow was coming down hard, and the temperature had dropped to a brutal -76 F, pushing the limits of what any human could survive.Â
If anyone was still out there, they’d be frozen solid in no time.Â
The zombies‘ blood was starting to freeze up, making them even slower and dumber as they dragged themselves through the darkness. A horde of zombies, drawn by the unmistakable scent of humans, tracked their way to the edge of the village.Â
But it was as if some mysterious force was keeping them out. They simply avoided the main entrance, circling the village, searching for another way in.Â

Chapter 75Â
A faint sound echoed from the stairs leading up to the second floor, sounding especially eerie in the pitch–black night. In the room, Chloe and Emily snapped their eyes open at the same time, both staring at the door.Â
Suddenly, the sound vanished, as if it had never existed at all. The two locked eyes in the darkness and then closed their eyes again. With a click, the door creaked open.Â
“Little girl, little girl…” A strange voice drifted through the darkness, carrying a bewitching, almost mesmerizing tone, like a Siren softly chanting.Â
Even though Chloe and Emily were both tense and alert, the eerie singing slowly lulled them into drowsiness. After about ten minutes, the chanting stopped, and the whole village slipped into a deep sleep.Â
A girl in a white puffer jacket stood at the foot of the bed, her hair hanging loose and hiding half her face. The eye that showed was a dull gray–brown, while the other half of her face was covered in spiderweb cracks.Â
The cracks were black, almost as if they were laced with venom. She flashed a wide grin at the two girls in bed, letting out a bone–chilling, raspy cackle.Â
With every shake of her body and burst of laughter, bits of frozen, rotten flesh broke off and scattered. There was no mistake. This girl was a mutant zombie.Â
A terrified, shaky voice came from behind the door. “You enjoy your meal. I… I’m just gonna get out of here.” Before he could even finish, the overpowering reek of urine hit the room.Â
