Chapter 76

The guy’s pants were soaked through, and the water hadn’t even had time to drip down before it turned to ice in the freezing air.

His eyes were wide with terror, and he was shaking like a leaf. He couldn’t tell if it was the cold or just pure fear making him tremble.

Just as he was about to turn and run, the girl’s head twisted a full 180 degrees to face him, while her body stayed perfectly still.

She bared her teeth in a creepy grin at the fleeing man and croaked, “Take… away…” Her voice rasped out the words, harsh. and broken.

The guy’s legs went weak, and the thought of that place made his mind go totally blank. “W–What?” he stammered.

As soon as he said so, the zombie girl’s eyes flashed with menace, and the guy, terrified of his wits, started nodding like crazy. “O–Okay…”

Chloe and Emily were bounced and jostled on a rickety handcart all the way up to a small hill. As soon as they were there, the guy bolted, stumbling and tumbling over himself in his desperate rush to get away.

At the top of the hill stood a huge willow tree. In this cold, with subzero temperatures and everything covered in snow and ice, all the other plants around were dead and lifeless.

But at the very top of the willow, there was a single long, vibrant green branch, the only sign of life, swaying in the wind.

Chloe’s

eyes narrowed, her pupils shrinking sharply, and for a moment, her breath caught. ‘Oh my god,‘ Chloe thought. ‘It’s only been a month since the apocalypse, and there’s already a three–level mutant plant? That’s freaking crazy!‘

In her previous life, she didn’t even see a three–level mutant plant or mutant beast for a whole year after the apocalypse, But now, they were popping up after just one month.

‘And of course, I’m the one who stumbles right into them. What the hell kind of luck is this?‘ Chloe grumbled to herself.

Obviously, every other branch on the big willow was shriveled and dead, except for the very top, where a single long willow branch drooped down, shimmering with a faint, ghostly green glow in the darkness.

That zombie girl was obviously right at the edge of level three, and with just the slightest push, she could break through to level four at any moment.

She looked like a true elite among zombies, a real king. Even at level three, she already had the intelligence of a two–year- old human and could even utter a few simple words.

No doubt, she was destined to become a major zombie overlord in the future.

Chloe tried to recall the infamous Top Ten Terrors List from her previous life, the ranking of the world’s scariest mutant beasts and zombies.

Out of nowhere, a legend hit her. The Zombie Girl, who was number ten and was the only zombie girl to ever make it onto that list.

People only knew she was a ten–level zombie, smarter than any human. Nobody knew what kind of powers she had, but anyone who saw her was basically doomed. The one thing everyone remembered was that she always had a walking willow tree tagging along.

‘No way. That willow! Chloe thought.

Chloe’s breath hitched, and the Zombie Girl caught it right away. Her eyes snapped to Chloe, glinting with an eerie, unnatural glow. She reached out, her black–gray claws lunging straight for Chloe’s vital spot.

Chloe vanished in a heartbeat, reappearing behind the Zombie Girl. To Chloe’s shock, the Zombie Girl reacted even faster than that mutant tiger. Before Chloe could even make a move, she’d already spun around to face her.

In the blink of an eye, the Zombie Girl was right next to her, moving so fast that Chloe didn’t even have a chance to fight back. She was totally outmatched.

Her mind barely registered the icy touch on her neck before, with a single thought, she dove into her spiritual space.

When the human suddenly disappeared, a look of confusion flickered in Zombie Girl’s gray–black eyes. It seemed that she’d never encountered anything like this before.

Suddenly, the Zombie Girl seemed to sense something and whipped around. Chloe’s ice sword was already at her vital spot, but in a moment of blinking, the Zombie Girl twisted her body in a creepy, unnatural way and slipped right past the blade.

The instant her hands hit the ground, she reached out, trying to grab Chloe’s calf. But the moment her fingers brushed Chloe’s leg, Chloe vanished into thin air once again.

After a brief moment of confusion, the Zombie Girl’s face contorted with a rage she’d never felt before, and she howled in fury at the empty air in front of her.

Inside her spiritual space, Chloe pressed a hand to her hammering heart. Good thing she didn’t get caught up in a fight. She immediately bailed into her spiritual space once she found that her sneak attack didn’t work. Otherwise, she’d be zombie chow by now.

The Zombie Girl was freakishly strong. Whoever got caught by her was pretty much game over.

“That Zombie Girl is seriously a pain in the ass,” Chloe muttered to herself.

Her reflexes and speed were even crazier than Chloe’s. Right now, all Chloe could do was hit and run. Strike once, then bail into her spiritual space, success or not.

“Crap.” Chloe suddenly realized that Emily was still out there.

Chloe emerged from her spiritual space and saw that the Zombie Girl hadn’t touched Emily at all. Instead, she was howling furiously at the empty air, going absolutely berserk.

Then, as if she suddenly picked up on Chloe’s presence, she bared her teeth and charged straight at her.

Chloe saw the Zombie Girl take just one step forward, But in the blink of an eye, her figure flickered and reappeared right next to her. It was speed power. And her speed totally outclassed Chloe’s.

Chloe narrowed her eyes and darted back, putting a good 30 feet between them.

Just when things couldn’t get any worse, the big willow tree on the nearby hill suddenly moved. Specifically, the longest, highest branch at the very top started to stir.

The branch lashed out with brutal speed, cracking across Emily’s thigh. The blow ripped her flesh open, blood spraying everywhere.

Emily was a spirit–powered human, but her level was way too low, which was why she’d gotten knocked out by the Zombie Girl’s psychic attack. She hadn’t been out for long, and with the pain jolting through her body, she snapped awake almost immediately.

As soon as she opened her eyes, she saw a long willow branch glowing green, lashing down at her. She recoiled in shock, and the handcart beneath her wobbled and flipped over, dumping her onto the ground.

Emily ended up pinned under the cart, which shielded her from most of the branch’s assault. The cart was shattered in an instant, and Emily’s face went ghostly pale.

“Emily, get away from that branch,” Chloe shouted from a distance.

Hearing Chloe’s warning, Emily scrambled to get away, fumbling and tripping over herself in her panic. Only then did she realize that the branch was still part of the willow tree and its reach was limited, so it couldn’t get any farther than her calf.

Emily breathed a silent sigh of relief. Having no time to worry about the stabbing pain in her leg, she was already gearing up to launch a spirit–powered storm attack at the Zombie Girl.

“No, stop.” Chloe desperately tried to warn Emily, but she was powerless to stop her in time.

Emily’s spirit–powered attack hit the Zombie Girl’s mind, but it was like tossing a water droplet into the ocean. No reaction at all. Instead, the Zombie Girl zeroed in on her intensity.

In a fit of rage, the Zombie Girl stood stock–still and then twisted her neck with a sickening crack that echoed through the silent night. The whole thing was extra freaky.

“Emily, run,” Chloe yelled. At the same moment, she sprang up, launching herself to cut off the Zombie Girl’s attack on Emily.

Suddenly, the sound of a girl’s sobbing rang out inside their heads, like a demon singing a twisted lullaby, crying out in

agony.

The sound was low, but it haunted them, reverberating endlessly. It made their heads pound, their minds go blank, and it was so overwhelming that they just wanted to give up and end it right there.
