Chapter 77Â
Chloe’s head felt like it was splitting apart, ready to burst. The pain was so intense that even her attacks slowed down a lot.Â
‘What should I do? There wasn’t enough time stored in the spiritual space for Emily to even last two seconds inside, and there’s no way I’d leave my friend behind. If only I could get her inside,‘ Chloe thought.Â
Suddenly, an idea struck Chloe. She thought, ‘I couldn’t put living things into the spiritual space. If I forced it, every second inside would burn through half an hour of stored time. But what about the Zombie Girl, who isn’t technically alive?‘Â
Hoping it might work, Chloe reached out and stored the Zombie Girl as soon as she touched her. Chloe was both shocked and thrilled. The Zombie Girl actually disappeared into the spiritual space.Â
Chloe’s consciousness slipped into the spiritual space. The Zombie Girl just stood there, looking lost and unusually calm.Â
“Huh? Where did that zombie go?” Emily glanced around warily, half–suspecting this was some new trick the Zombie Girl had up her sleeve.Â
“I stored her in the spiritual space. Let’s take a breather before we deal with those mutant willow branches,” Chloe said.Â
Chloe quickly checked Emily’s wounds. Luckily, they were just superficial. If those mutant willow branches had been any closer, her leg would be done for.Â
Good thing it was only the mutant plant that got her. If it had been the Zombie Girl, Emily would’ve already turned into another spirit–powered zombie.Â
“Emily, how many zombie cores do you have left?” Chloe asked.Â
Chloe only had one core left. The rest had already been sucked up by the spiritual space, nowhere near enough to restore her strength or heal her injuries.Â
Without saying a word, Emily took off her bag and dumped a pile of cores onto the ground. They were all level one and twoÂ
cores.Â
“These are all the ones you gave me before. Take them, they’re all yours,” Emily said.Â
Chloe didn’t waste any time. She grabbed the cores and started absorbing them right away. With her other hand, she pressed gently against Emily’s wounds, sending a wave of green healing energy through her.Â
Hours slipped by, and finally, both of them stood up again. Their minds felt sharp, and Emily’s leg was as good as new. On the ground was a pile of powdered cores. They’d burned through every last one.Â
“Emily, are you ready?” Chloe asked.Â
Emily nodded.Â
The two of them teamed up smoothly, quickly broke the mutant willow branches off the tree, and stashed them in the spiritual space.Â
“Chloe, is this a mutant cactus?” Emily asked, her face full of confusion as she stared at the potted cactus that had just appeared out of thin air.Â
“Yeah, this cactus was one of the very first plants to mutate. I’ve kept it in the spiritual space all this time, so it hasn’t leveled up yet,” Chloe explained.Â
This cactus had already shown signs of basic intelligence right after it mutated, which was incredibly rare. Plants or zombies that developed intelligence could become the most terrifying threats in the future.Â

“We already took care of the mutant willow branches. What’s the point of bringing it out now?” Emily asked, still confused.Â
Chloe didn’t relax just because the Zombie Girl and the mutant willow branches were caught. Instead, she was still on high alert, scanning the area for anything unusual. At the same time, she kept an eye on the cactus, watching what it would doÂ
next.Â
She noticed it was reaching out frantically in one direction, like there was some energy over there it desperately needed.Â
Chloe walked over to the roots of the big willow tree and finally said, “I think there’s something here that’s making these mutant creatures thrive.”Â
The closer Chloe got to the willow tree’s roots, the more excited the potted cactus in her hands became. Its black spines stood up like steel needles, practically itching to dive into the soil.Â
Just then, an electronic voice echoed in Chloe’s mind. “Spiritual space has detected a special mutant zombie with the potential to become a Zombie King. Do you want to turn it into your minion?”Â
Chloe froze mid–movement, her mind going blank for a moment. ‘Seriously? There’s actually a system in spiritual space. This is the first time I’ve ever heard a robotic voice in my head,‘ Chloe thought.Â
Then the robotic voice popped up in her head again. “Spiritual space has detected a special mutant zombie with the potential to become a Zombie King. Do you want to turn it into your minion?”Â
This time, Chloe didn’t hesitate at all. She shouted excitedly, “Yes. Yes. Yes!” She repeated it three times, just to make sure.Â
Emily looked at her, confused. “Chloe, what’s up with you?”Â
Chloe didn’t answer. Her excitement faded into frustration. Because the robotic voice in her head spoke up again, “To turn the special zombie into your minion, you need thirty mutant cores.”Â
Chloe’s eyes went wide, and she almost choked on her own spit. “W–what did you just say? Thirty? Mutant cores?”Â
“Yes. The Zombie Girl is special, with the potential to become a Zombie King. It takes a ton of mutant cores. She’s about to hit level four, and if she does, you’ll need sixty mutant cores,” the robotic voice replied.Â
Chloe swallowed hard. “So, every time the Zombie Girl levels up, the number of cores I need to turn her into my minion doubles?”Â
“No,” the robotic voice replied.Â
Chloe let out a slow breath, but the system’s next words made her choke on it.Â
“The Zombie Girl has gained intelligence and has a high chance of becoming a Zombie King.Â
“So, when she reaches level five, you’ll need five hundred cores of mutant zombie, and they have to be at least the same level as her current level,” the robotic voice said.Â
If the first part was already hard to swallow, the second part was just utterly insane,Â
It had only been a month since the apocalypse. There couldn’t be so many three–level zombies in the whole world.Â
Running into one was like winning the lottery, and now the system wanted thirty of them. Plus, the mutant cores had to be at least as high–level as the Zombie Girl herself.Â
‘Are you kidding me?‘ Chloe thought. ‘Forget it, maybe hunting down survivors for their cores is actually more doable.’Â
Just as Chloe was about to give up, the robotic voice chimed in again. “The spiritual space can keep the Zombie Girl stable for three months. Make sure you finish the task as soon as possible.”Â

Chloe’s eyes sparkled with excitement, and she straightened up as she heard this. She rubbed her chin with her thumb and index finger, deep in thought. ‘Three months. If nothing crazy happens, there should be a bunch of zombies leveling up by then, right?‘Â
This quest was damn near impossible, but the reward was way too good to pass up. After all, it was a three–level zombie that had intelligence, with a real chance of becoming a Zombie King.Â
And if the Zombie Girl really was the Phantom Zombie, number ten in the Top Ten Terrors List from her previous life, then Chloe would seriously hit the jackpot.Â
Legend had it that the Phantom Zombie only ranked tenth, not because she lacked power, but because she specialized in ambushes rather than direct combat.Â
Her speed was said to be the fastest in the world, like an elite assassin who appeared and disappeared without a trace, making her the most mysterious among the Top Ten Terrors List.Â
In terms of killing power, she could easily make the top three, but no one had ever seen her, so nobody knew if it was true.Â
Just thinking about it, Chloe felt her blood boiling with excitement. “Alright, three months it is.” She nearly shouted that last line, rubbing her hands together with excitement.Â
