Chapter 79Â

Emily was so mad at his words that she could’ve exploded. If it weren’t for the situation, she would’ve thrown hands rightÂ
then and there.Â
She snorted, “Relax. With a mug like yours, as if I’d ever be interested.”Â
Honestly, these two were something else. They’d been at each other’s throats since the first time they met, and even while running for their lives, they couldn’t stop bickering.Â
After Emily left, Chloe kept ambushing the mutant roots, always hitting fast and ducking into her spiritual space right afterÂ
each strike.Â
She’d pop up 30 feet away every time, and just kept looping the tactic.Â
After dozens of rounds, Chloe had the mutant roots‘ attack patterns down,Â
Probably because of its rank, the roots couldn’t extend much farther; they could only reach within 30 feet.Â
Which just happened to be the exact distance Chloe could blink using her spiritual space ability.Â
Whenever it struck, it was always that same single, dusty–gray root.Â
Still, every time Chloe and the root collided, it was like sparks flying, over in an instant.Â
After a few rounds, Chloe couldn’t help but think, ‘Damn, this mutant roots is practically at fourth level! It’s at least as strong as Zombie Girl, maybe even stronger. What the hell is up with this world?‘Â
The apocalypse had only been going on for a month, and ninety percent of the mutant creatures and zombies were still weaklings.Â
Running into a first–level mutant should’ve been rare, but she kept bumping into third–level threats again and again.Â
‘Did my time–traveling mess up the timeline or something? Is this some kind of butterfly effect?‘ Chloe wondered.Â
But there was no time to think. The mutant roots shot up in a flash, right in Chloe’s face.Â
Just as it was about to hit her kill spot, Chloe blinked into her spiritual space.Â
This root was totally OP. Inside its 30–foot range, it was basically invincibleÂ
Good thing Chloe had her spiritual space as a cheat code; otherwise, she’d already be pushing up daisies.Â
‘No way, I need something that can actually take these mutant roots down; otherwise, there’s no way I’m beating it, Chloe thought.Â
Chloe sank into deep thought inside her spiritual space.Â
“Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth,” Chloe muttered to herself. The mutant roots are Wood, so Metal beats Wood, right?”Â
Then it clicked. Frank got four powers: sensing, metal, strength, and steel.Â
With all those abilities, he could go on the offense or play defense whenever he wanted. He was basically the perfect teammate, like the universe made him for battle.Â
If her teammates hadn’t betrayed her in her previous life, Chloe might’ve teamed up with Frank without a second thought.Â
But she wondered, ‘Guess I’ll just keep watching for now!’Â

Chloe popped out of her spiritual space again, landing exactly 30 feet from the mutant roots, right at the edge of its attackÂ
range.Â
Her ice sword slammed into the mutant roots with a metallic clang, sparks flying all around.Â
The attack was over in a flash, and Chloe darted back, widening the gap between herself and the root.Â
Her ice sword shattered, and after so many clashes, tiny cracks were finally starting to show on the mutant roots.Â
Frank’s voice echoed from nearby. “You little freak! Don’t even think about touching my boss!”Â
Then, he shot forward like a cannonball at the mutant roots. Chloe barely had time to react.Â
“Watch out!” Chloe shouted.Â
But then, something totally mind–blowing happened. Frank rushed right into the mutant roots‘ attack range, and the mutant roots just ignored him completely.Â
Chloe’s eyes went wide. ‘Is this the power of elemental advantage or what?‘ she wondered.Â
‘Frank’s only a second–level powered human, and he’s actually shutting down mutant roots that’s nearly fourth level?‘ Chloe thought, stunned.Â
‘Holy crap, the whole elemental counter thing is actually legit!‘ Chloe thought, still reeling.Â
Frank was totally lost. “What the hell is going on?”Â
Suddenly, Chloe shouted, “Watch out!”Â
Chloe moved like lightning, conjuring another ice sword and stabbing it toward Frank’s back.Â
Clang!Â
The ice sword shattered, and fresh cracks appeared on the mutant roots where it had been struck.Â
Chloe grabbed Frank and yanked him back, her face looking downright awful.Â
“Don’t you dare get within 30 feet of that mutant roots,” she warned in a low, serious voice.Â
Frank clutched his chest, still reeling from his brush with death.Â
“My god, what kind of mutant is that? That’s terrifying? he blurted out.Â
Just moments ago, he thought he was a goner. That sudden, overwhelming pressure nearly made it impossible to breathe.Â
“That mutant roots are about to hit the fourth level,” Chloe said, her voice grim.Â
Emily and Frank both sucked in a sharp breath, instinctively stumbling back a few steps.Â
“F–fourth level?” Frank stammered, his voice trembling.Â
Frank swallowed hard. He could sense power levels, but if someone was way stronger than him, he honestly couldn’t tell atÂ
all.Â
Chloe nodded, her face grim.Â
“And even when it burns through its energy, all it has to do is pull its roots back in, and in a flash, it’s back at peak strength,” Chloe explained.Â

Before Emily and Frank could even start panicking, Chloe cut in. “I think that rock is helping the mutant roots refuel”Â
Emily and Frank looked at each other, totally confused, then their faces turned incredulous.Â
“Oh my god, this world is insane! Even rocks are mutating now? Man, I just want to go home to my wife,” Frank moaned,Â
almost in tears.Â
Chloe ignored the scared look on Frank’s face and started making a plan.Â
“Emily, hit it with your spirit–powered attacks from a distance, and don’t forget your crossbow, air and shoot whenever you get the chance,” Chloe said.Â
“Frank, use your metal powers to attack, or try smashing the ice layer on the ground,” she added.Â
Metal powers weren’t just about gold. They worked on anything solid and tough.Â
“Got it,” Frank replied.Â
Chloe took a quick breather, then went right back at the mutant roots.Â
No more playing around, everyone unleashed their best moves this time.Â
“Remember, keep those mutant roots busy and don’t let them get anywhere near the rock,” Chloe ordered.Â
If Chloe was right, that big rock had to be the legendary Cosmic Meteorite from her previous life, the kind that could influence everything nearby, causing creatures to mutate and grow at crazy speeds.Â
It could even heal wounded mutant plants.Â
Chloe had only ever heard rumors about treasures like this in her previous life; supposedly, only the major bases ever managed to get their hands on one.Â
Now that she’d actually found one, there was no way she was letting it go, no matter what it took.Â
“Got it,” Emily and Frank replied together.Â
Both of them were dead serious now.Â
After Chloe caught her breath, the three of them attacked at the same time.Â
Emily’s psychic storm was seriously OP. She could punch way above her weight class. As long as her target wasn’t spirit- powered, her attacks would deal some real damage.Â
The instant Emily launched her psychic assault, Chloe and Frank struck almost simultaneously.Â
A wild gust swept up a barrage of ice spikes and shattered rocks, tearing into the mutant roots.Â
Frank finally whipped out the sniper rifle he’d been hauling around, and with his metal powers guiding every shot, his aim was laser–sharp, and each bullet packed a serious punch.Â
Bang!Â
The bullet tore into the ancient mutant roots whipping wildly through the air, and for a split second, Chloe thought she heard a tiny screech.Â
Seeing the mutant roots trying to pull back, Chloe amped up her tornado, blocking its path back to the meteorite.Â
With no way to get back to the meteorite to heal up, the mutant roots just kept taking more and more damage.Â
Chloe, as the main fighter, finally uprooted the mutant roots, and the ice blades swirling within her tornado sliced the rock- hard, gray–brown root into pieces.Â
All three of them were completely exhausted. Chloe, having taken the brunt of the fight, was battered and barely able to stay on her feet, swaying unsteadily.Â
