Chapter 82 

At the mention of Riverside. Frank’s laid–back attitude disappeared, and his face fell. 

His whole family was in Riverside. After all this time since the apocalypse, there was little doubt about what had happened to his pregnant wife and seven–year–old daughter. 

But since he hadn’t seen them with his own eyes, a sliver of hope still lingered in his heart. Now, as he was about to fare the truth. Frank felt his heart tighten. 

“Let’s go.” Frank muttered. 

To avoid drawing attention to their spiritual space, they traveled light. Their team was small, just four people. 

But together, they were so powerful that they could wipe out any other powered human squad in an instant. 

They moved through the hordes of zombies like they weren’t even there. 

The roads were jam–packed with abandoned cars, and it wasn’t until nightfall that they finally reached Riverside. 

Emily was grinning, holding up a handful of freshly dug–up cores. 

“Chloe, I’ve got a whole backpack full of cores now. Will these help Zombie Girl?” Emily asked. 

Mindy and Frank came over, each with a backpack stuffed with cores. “Ours are packed, too. Here, you can have them.” Mindy said. 

Mindy was full of confidence now, nothing like the defeated person she’d been when everyone was guilt–tripping her. 

With her vampire family gone, it felt like a heavy burden had finally been lifted. She was sad, but honestly, she was also kind of relieved. 

Chloe gave a wry smile and shook her head. “You guys should use them first.” 

Most of these were just level–one cores, which weren’t of any use to Zombie Girl. 

Right now, Chloe was in a bind. Ever since she got the Cosmic Meteorite into her spiritual space, the system kept sending her notifications in her head. 

[Dear Host, do you want your spiritual space to absorb the meteorite? Your spiritual space will instantly level up to the second level,] the system prompted. 

Then it added, [Host, the Cosmic Meteorite is worth a hundred stage–four mutant cores. Do you want to activate the servant assimilation mode?] 

The Cosmic Meteorite was just too valuable, and Chloe hadn’t decided what to do with it yet. She decided to put it off until she had time to think it over, so she told the system no without hesitation. 

But the system kept bugging her every ten minutes, relentless as ever. 

It was driving Chloe crazy. 

Finally, after all that relentless nagging, Chloe couldn’t take it anymore and gave in. “Alright, activate the servant assimilation mode, transform Zombie Girl.” 

[Got it, Host. Do you want to use the rest of the meteorite to upgrade your spiritual space?] the system asked. 

It sounded like it was worried Chloe might say no, so it started listing off all the benefits of upgrading.

[Once your spiritual space hits the second level, it’ll get ten times bigger. You won’t have to worry about running out of room for all your supplies anymore,] the system said. 

Chloe was speechless. ‘Supplies? Seriously? That’s all the stuff I’ll actually need someday, she thought. 

[And you can stay inside for half an hour a day. 

[The three–level gets you mountains and hills, the four–level brings rivers, the level–five lets you raise chickens and ducks, and by the six–level, the soil is super fertile,] the system went on. 

Chloe’s eyes sparkled, her heart racing with excitement. 

“So, if I level up my spiritual space, I can even start raising livestock in there?” she asked. 

“Of course,” the system replied. 

After thinking for a moment, Chloe finally asked the question she’d always been curious about. “So, in my previous life, how high did Sophie get her spiritual space?” 

After all, in her previous life, Sophie was in possession of the spiritual space for ten years. 

[Sophie didn’t have your family’s bloodline, so she wasn’t really the true owner of the spiritual space,] the system replied. 

It paused for a moment, then continued: [Because you chose to give the spiritual space away, she was allowed to use it, but only that, just use it.] 

[So in her hands, it was just a moving warehouse. It couldn’t be upgraded,] it added. 

Back in her previous life, when Sophie finally unlocked the spiritual space, the apocalypse had already dragged on for ages, so she barely managed to stash away any supplies at all. 

Chloe was deep in thought, her feet flying as she sprinted ahead, handling everything at once. 

“You’ve always existed, but you never showed up in my previous life. Even after I was time–traveling, you kept quiet. So why are you suddenly appearing now?” Chloe asked. 

The system’s mechanical voice sounded downright proud. [If you were still as foolish as you were in your previous life, I wouldn’t have bothered showing up, ever,] it replied. 

Chloe choked on her words for a second. 

“One last thing. About how I got time–traveling,” she asked. 

[No idea,] the system replied. 

‘Seriously? Even the system has no clue about my time–traveling,‘ Chloe wondered, surprised. 

“Chloe, watch out!” Mindy shouted. 

A second–level mutant zombie suddenly appeared, snapping Chloe out of her thoughts. She dodged, but still ended up with a scrape on her arm. 

Without missing a beat, she swung her ice sword and sliced off the zombie’s head. 

Mindy, who was closest, saw the wound on Chloe’s arm and got anxious. 

“What do we do? You’re hurt!” Mindy blurted out. 

Everyone knew how fast the zombie virus could spread. Just a tiny scratch, and you’d turn into a zombie in no time.

“Chill out! Guns are banned, no way those are real. They’re probably just some fake guns they picked up somewhere, trying to scare us,” David scoffed. 

He barely finished speaking when, with a bang, a bloody hole burst open in David’s temple. He still wore that arrogant sneer as he collapsed lifelessly to the ground. 

“David!” Andy screamed, his voice shaking with fear. 

Andy’s legs gave out, and he wet himself in terror. 

Frank blew on the muzzle of his gun, then whistled mockingly at the villagers. 

“Who’s next?” he called out, swaggering with a cocky confidence that left Emily staring in disbelief. 

“Wow, Frank, your shooting’s on point!” Emily said. 

Frank straightened his back, grinning. “You bet.” 

With his precision ability, Frank’s aim was dead–on every time. His shots packed a punch and could take down any single target with ease. 

Whether it was range or explosive power, Frank’s shots packed ten times the punch of a regular bullet. 

That one shot sent the villagers working the outer wall running for their lives. Their unity was already shaky to begin with. 

They scattered in all directions, tails between their legs. 

Frank raised an eyebrow. “Guns aren’t much use against zombies or mutant freaks, but when it comes to killing people? They work way better than any ability.” 

“Too bad we don’t have many bullets left,” he added with a click of his tongue. 

After that, they found an empty villa and holed up there for a few hours to rest. 

Mindy and Frank took turns standing guard. 

At noon, the group left the village and set off toward Riverside. 

“Hey, where’s our car?” Frank suddenly called out. 

As they passed the spot where they’d parked the RV yesterday, Frank let out a surprised yelp. 

Emily shot him a look. “Use your sensing ability. Where’s the car?” she teased. 

Frank furrowed his brows. No matter how hard he tried to figure it out, he just couldn’t make sense of what was going on. 

Judging by the looks on Emily and Chloe’s faces, he knew the car was definitely still around. 

Wait, and now that he thought about it. The Zombie Girl was missing too, 

Weren’t they supposed to collect thirty three–level or higher mutant cores to upgrade the Zombie Girl? 

Suddenly, a chill ran down his spine as a wild possibility hit him. His eyes widened, and his mind was racing with all sorts of crazy thoughts. 

“Wait. Don’t tell me you actually have a spiritual space?” Frank blurted out, his voice shaking with disbelief. 

Emily slapped his hand away, rolling her eyes. “Stop freaking out already.”

Even Mindy, standing off to the side, was totally stunned. 

She couldn’t believe someone really had a spiritual space power, just like something out of a web novel. 

‘Man, I really hit the jackpot, Mindy thought to herself. 

“Alright, let’s pick up the pace. Let’s hope we reach Riverside before it gets dark,” Chloe urged.
