Chapter 3Â
TabithaÂ
The last two days have been nothing shortÂ
of misery. Kyle’s parents have beenÂ
inconsolable. Their only son has died and theyÂ
feel that loss unlike anything I could haveÂ
imagined. Kyle’s mother, who has never been myÂ
biggest fan, has all but refused to even look atÂ
me since it happened. Mason had called themÂ
and told them the news since I wasÂ
unresponsive. The thoughts of speaking toÂ
people and seeing the looks on their faces whenÂ
they learn how he died are almost more than IÂ
can bear. The guilt of it all was gnawing away atÂ
me like a mouse with a piece of cheese. EveryÂ
second more of me gets chipped away and lostÂ
for good, never to return.Â
“Tabitha, the plans for the funeral need to beÂ
made. I know he’s at Whitman’s and they’veÂ
Chapter 3Â
offered to bring things here for us to take a lookÂ
- at. I know you’re not ready to go outside justÂ
yet.” My father–in–law Hampton says. EvenÂ
though his wife has never liked me, Hampton hasÂ
always been kind. There are times when IÂ
wondered if Kyle could have ever come from thisÂ
man. They were as different as night and day.Â
I look up at Hampton and give him a weakÂ
nod. I’ve not been able to talk much since theÂ
day it happened. I had screamed so much thatÂ
my voice had given out and I was trying to saveÂ
my strength for the funeral. There was a knockÂ
at the door and he went to open it. OutsideÂ
stood Mason and Brittany, but there wasÂ
someone behind them. I couldn’t see well, but IÂ
heard Hampton invite them in. It shocked me toÂ
see that it was Heather Marshall, a friend of mineÂ
from high school.Â
Standing next to her was a little boy, aroundÂ
five years old who looked like the spitting imageÂ

of Kyle. My heart stopped at that moment and I felt my hand go to my mouth. Mason led them all into the living room where Alexandra my mother-Â
in–law and I were seated. I looked at Brittany andÂ
noticed she couldn’t look me in the face. I turnedÂ
to Mason, and he had a blank look on him. TheyÂ
knew something. They knew something, and itÂ
was about to turn my world upside down.Â
“All of you know Heather, and this is her son,Â
Kyle. Tabitha, there are some things that I needÂ
to tell you about.” Mason says.Â
Everything within me is begging him to stayÂ
quiet. I don’t want to hear it, not after what I hadÂ
to witness two days ago. As if Kyle hadn’tÂ
already ripped my heart out enough, I’m going toÂ
have to hear the one thing no wife wants to hear.Â
“Kyle and Heather have been together forÂ
the last ten years.” Mason says.Â

Hampton looked as if he was about to hitÂ

something. He was so angry. Alexandra satÂ
stone still like it wasn’t a shock to her. All I couldÂ
do was close my eyes and will the tears that IÂ
knew were going to go away. Kyle and I had onlyÂ
been married for five years. That means he wasÂ
seeing Heather while we were still dating. I’veÂ
been living a lie for so long.Â
“That’s not all.” Heather says.Â
“A month ago, Kyle forged your signature onÂ
divorce papers. He then married Heather.Â
Everything will go to her. He changed everythingÂ
so that your name is on nothing.” Mason said. IÂ
look at Mason and see that this isn’t shocking toÂ
him. How is any of this even possible?Â
out.Â
“How long have all of you known?” I croakÂ
“Brittany and I have known the entire time.”Â
Mason says. He at least has the decency to lookÂ
ashamed.Â

“I’ve known as well. I was the one who toldÂ
him to start a relationship with her. I knew youÂ
wouldn’t be able to give him what he wanted.”Â
Alexandra says.Â
“Alex!” Hampton yells. I jumped in surprise.Â
“You knew about this and allowed it to go on?”Â
“Of course I did. You know Tabitha has neverÂ
been good enough for him! I was only protectingÂ
my boy!” she yells. She then turns to me and IÂ
see accusation in her eyes. “What did you do toÂ
make him kill himself? He never would have doneÂ
this with how much he loved Heather and theirÂ
child?”Â
All at once, it was like everything brokeÂ
inside of me. I couldn’t feel any more pain, hurt,Â
or sadness. I began to laugh. The more I tried toÂ
stop the harder I laughed. The room fell silentÂ
and everyone watched me as I had my nervousÂ
breakdown. I finally got control of myself and letÂ
