The second Elowen’s boots hit the obsidian courtyard, the air crackled like a damn lightning storm. Fae nobles whispered behind velvet gloves, dragon riders stared like they were trying to memorize her face, and a few cocky little shits looked her over like they were about to challenge her to a duel.
“They feel her power,” Rhygar rumbled inside my chest. “They feel me in her. That’s why they flinch.”
I didn’t need him to tell me. Every heartbeat in that courtyard screamed the same thing: They didn’t know what the hell she was, but they knew she mattered. I stepped up beside her and nodded to the twin guards at the great doors.
“Open them,” I growled. “We seek audience with the Dragonborn King.”
They hesitated…just a blink, just enough to piss me off…but then shoved the massive doors open. Inside, the Throne Hall of Skyfire greeted us with volcanic heat and vaulted ceilings woven with veins of glowing stone. Stormlight shimmered through open skylights, casting golden halos across the marble.
And there he was. King Kaelrion Drakemire.
The bastard didn’t rise. He leaned lazily in his throne of carved onyx and bone, one boot slung over the armrest, his dragonsteel crown tilted like he wore it out of obligation. His emerald gaze flicked over me, then Elowen…and settled on the army trailing behind her like a
royal fucking parade.
He arched a brow. “Vaelrix. You bring a circus into my court?”
My upper lip curled. “I bring warriors. Survivors. And the thrice chosen vessel of the gods.”
He stood. Slowly. His voice dropped, coiled with contempt.
“I don’t give a fuck if she was chosen by moonlight, starlight, or the asscrack of dawn. This is not my war.”
Gasps rippled through the hall as King Raedon Flameborn stepped forward, red tattoos glowing like magma under his skin.
“You arrogant prick,” Raedon snapped. “This is your war. Raelith is already spreading her rot to our lands. Or are your scouts not reporting the rot blooming under your cliffs?”
Queen Aevalyn of the Starborn Veil drifted like moon mist beside him, her voice cool and sharp. “The stars warned us. She’s real. She’s rising. And if you stand in the way of Elowen Skye Thorne, you stand in the way of the divine will.”
Kaelrion snarled and raised a hand toward the queen. “Your stars can shove it. I’ve lost hundreds of dragon riders to the realm of man. You want me to offer more to some prophecy touched half breed?”
The room erupted into shouts, offended nobles, growling guards, magic crackling. And Elowen… she didn’t move. Just stood there, quiet and burning with a steady fury that matched my own.

Then…THOOM.

A deafening roar echoed through the throne hall, shaking the very bones of the castle. The stone beneath us pulsed. A second later, a growl rolled through my spine like a god waking from slumber.
“Enough. You shame us, Kaelrion. You shame me.”
It was Thornakar, Kaelrion’s ancient bonded dragon. The dragon voice boomed through every damn mind in the castle like thunder ripping through stone.
Kaelrion staggered. His jaw clenched. “Don’t do this, old friend.”
“She is ours now. All of hers… are ours. Unless you wish to be the last king of a dying court.”
The silence afterward was so complete, you could’ve heard a fucking feather fall. Kaelrion dropped into his throne like it had burned him. Then waved a hand toward the steward.
“…Prepare the council chamber.”
Elowen turned to me, the ghost of a smirk playing on her delicious, full lips. “You dragons always this dramatic?”
I leaned down, smirking right back.“You’ve seen nothing yet, little wolf.”
Rhygar purred inside me like a cat with a fresh kill. “Our little wolf.”
“She’s ours now. You felt it too. When the time comes, we’ll burn worlds to keep her safe.”
Oh, we absolutely fucking would.
Elowen POV
Council Chamber
Dragonborn Court
The doors swung open with a rumble that could shake the stars loose from the sky.
The chamber was carved into volcanic stone, laced with glowing runes that pulsed like dragon hearts under the floor. A circular table sat in the center, obsidian and heavy, surrounded by high backed chairs carved with the emblems of wind, fire, sky, and ancient beasts, Magic saturated the air, hot, alive, and expectant.
My boots hit the stone with purpose, my silver star mark prickling under my left eye. My mates flanked me, Ashrian on my right, Bram and Daxon to the left, and Lachlan just behind, his energy coiled like a lightning strike waiting to land.
