Trying for a Baby 1

Trying for a Baby 1

Chapter 1

At the height of James Bennett’s love for me, my archnemesis lured me into a building that was

about to collapse.

The building crumbled during a heavy rainstorm, and James, ignoring everyone’s warnings, dug with his bare hands through the rubble for a full day and night to pull me out.

His handsthe very hands that once danced across piano keys with elegancewere now scarred

and raw from digging through the debris.

Because of Susan Blackwood’s relentless schemes, I lost everything.

To give me a better life, James gave up the music career he cherished and threw himself into the

world of finance.

During our leanest days, we stretched a single pack of instant noodles across two meals.

When he earned our first ten million, James said he wanted to use it to give me a wedding fit for a

century.

I said I didn’t want it. But deep down, I had been waiting for it with bated breath.

Ten million, twenty million, fifty millioneven after James’s company went public, the wedding he had promised remained a dream.

But I knew James loved me. Even without the wedding, he loved me.

Until the night a doctor friend of mine revealed that the vitamins I’d been taking while trying to conceive were actually contraceptives.

That same night, James came home drunk from an event, and two rings slipped out of his pocket. I caught a glimpse of the engravingsmy rival’s initials.

I appeared at the entrance of the private room holding the rings just as the party inside was starting.

This gathering had been organized by James specifically to welcome Susan to Crescent Heights. Thinking of the century wedding he had promised for five years but never delivered, and the

The moment I entered, I heard Susan ask James, Mr. Bennett, you know I and your wife have never gotten along. Aren’t you worried she’ll be upset that you’re making me an executive in your company?”

She won’t be. She’s at home trying to conceive and managing the household. The company is completely in my hands. Even if she knew, what could she do? She no longer has any say in staffing decisions.”

James leaned in toward her, the room around them empty, and clinked glasses with a smile, I

picked up your welcome gift yesterday. The ring is beautifulso perfect for you”

His words cut off abruptly when he realized his pocket was empty.

At that moment, someone in the room whispered, alerting him, Mr. Bennett, Ms. Davis is

here”

Hearing that, James turned to look at me. The instant our eyes met, his expression stiffened.

He instinctively scanned the room, as if asking who had told me about the gathering, before he said, Honey, I thought you were resting at home. Why are you here?”

James took a few quick steps toward me, but as he was about to touch me, I stepped back.

His expression froze, and he stopped in place.

Behind him, Susan crossed her arms, a mocking smirk on her face.

Susan Blackwood and I had been enemies for years. She was the one who had tricked me into that

collapsing building years ago.

She had told me James was injured and waiting for me somewhere, so I had rushed to him without

hesitation. But he wasn’t there.

I had barely escaped the wreckage. Yet, Susan had walked free because there wasn’t enough evidence against her.

And now, the man I trusted most, the husband I loved, had spent a fortune hiring her as an executive, secretly thrown a celebration in her honor, and even made matching rings engraved

with their initials.

I forced a smile and placed the rings in James’s hand.

I came here specifically to give these to you,I said. The rings engraved with your initials and hers. Aren’t you going to explain?”
