“See you later,” she said with a small smile.
Alexander gave a quiet hum that might have been agreement before stepping away from the table.
Faye watched him disappear through the doorway before turning her attention back to Irene.
“I think I’ll head to my room,” she said, pushing her chair back and standing. “It’s been a long day.”
Irene nodded in understanding.
“Yeah,” she said, leaning back slightly in her seat. “Same here.”
Faye paused beside the table and looked at her with a gentle expression.
“If you need anything, just let me know.”
“I will,” Irene replied.
Faye gave a small nod before leaving the dining room.
The rest of the table slowly began to disperse not long after that. The day had clearly reached the point
where everyone was ready to retreat to quieter spaces.
Irene and Jeffrey eventually made their way to the hallway together.
By the time they reached the room, the house had grown noticeably quieter.
Irene stepped inside first and let out a small breath as the door closed behind them.
“I didn’t realize how tired I was,” she muttered, rubbing the back of her neck.

“It’s been a full day.”
Irene kicked off her shoes near the bed and stretched slightly.

“Come in,” she called.
The door opened slightly, and Helen stepped into view.
“I hope I’m not interrupting,” she said.

say.
“Do you mind if I borrow you for a moment?” she asked.

“For what?”

“Just a moment.”
Jeffrey, who had already picked up his phone, glanced between them before speaking.
“I can give you two some space,” he offered.

Helen stepped slightly aside to allow him room to pass.
Jeffrey slipped his phone into his hand and walked toward the door.
“Take your time,” he added casually before stepping out into the hallway.
The door closed quietly behind him.
The hallway was well lit, the soft lighting giving the space a calm and quiet atmosphere.
Jeffrey paused there for a moment, glancing down at his phone as he unlocked the screen.
He hadn’t actually decided who he was going to call yet.

He scrolled briefly through his contacts as he began walking down the hallway.

movement from somewhere downstairs.
Jeffrey was halfway down the hallway when a door ahead of him suddenly opened.
