Chapter 344

I was sitting outside when the back door opened behind me.

I glanced over my shoulder just as Irene stepped out.

She spotted me and smiled.

“Hey, Luna.”

“Hey,” I replied, shifting a little on the bench so she could sit. “You’re up late… I almost knocked on your door.”

“It’s not that late,” she said.

She dropped down beside me, stretching her legs out in front of her.

For a moment, we just sat there enjoying the quiet.

Then I nudged her shoulder lightly.

“So,” I said, glancing sideways at her. “How was your night?”

I paused, then added with a small grin, “And how’s Jeffery?”

That did it.

Irene’s cheeks turned pink almost instantly.

“My night was fine,” she said a little too quickly. “And Jeff is fine.”

I leaned back, studying her.

“You’re glowing… I wonder why.”

Her head snapped toward me.

“I am not.”

“You are.”

She groaned dramatically.

“Oh my God.”

I laughed.

“What? I’m just saying.”

“You’re the worst,” she said.

“That’s a lie.”

That earned a small laugh from her.

After a moment, I glanced toward the house.

“By the way… I didn’t see Helen this morning,” I said. “Did she leave already?”

Irene rolled her eyes immediately.

“Oh, I’m sure she left.”

I turned slightly toward her.

“What happened?”

She sighed and leaned back against the bench.

“We had one of our mother–daughter talks.”

I raised an eyebrow.

“That bad?”

“She came to tell me exactly how I should be living my life,” Irene said. “Again.”

“And I’m guessing you didn’t go along with it.”

“Not even a little,” Irene said.

She shook her head, a small smirk tugging at her lips now.

“I think she finally realized she wasn’t going to win this time.”

I watched her quietly.

“She probably left early because she was disappointed,” Irene added. “I mean, she told me to be more like Alexander… I simply took her advice.” She shrugged.

I wasn’t sure what being more like Alexander meant, but I had an idea of how Helen must have shot herself in the foot by making such a statement.

I nudged Irene’s arm gently.

“Hey… go easy on her.”

Irene looked over at me.

“She’s still your mom.”

“I know,” she said with a sigh. “Trust me, I know.”

Irene was still talking when my phone suddenly rang.

I glanced down at the screen.

Alexander.

I raised a finger toward Irene. “Hold on.”

She waved her hand like it was fine.

I answered and brought the phone to my ear.

“Hey.”

“Hey,” Alexander’s voice came through, softer than usual. “How are you doing?”

“I’m fine,” I said. “Just outside getting some air.”

Then I added, “Roman’s awake now, by the way.”

“Oh?”

“Yeah. Dr. Adams was right,” I said, leaning back against the bench. “The training session definitely

triggered something.”

“What kind of something?”

“For the first time, he remembered how he ended up half–dead in the woods,” I explained. “He said he was being chased by wolves who clearly wanted him dead… that they attacked him and left him there.”

I paused slightly.

“But that’s all he remembers. He still can’t recall anything before that. Not where he came from. Nothing.”

Alexander was quiet for a second.

“Well,” he said finally, “that’s still progress. No matter how little.”

“I guess,” I said with a small sigh. “At least we know the memories are still there somewhere.”

“Exactly.”

I could hear faint movement on his end of the line, like he was walking somewhere.

“I have one more meeting to get through,” he said. “So I’ll probably be back home later.”

“Alright,” I said. “See you later.”

“See you later.”

The call ended, and I lowered the phone.

Irene was looking at me now, curiosity written all over her face.

“I’ve been meaning to ask,” she said.

I glanced at her.

“Ask what?”

She tilted her head slightly.

“Who’s that guy… Roman?”

For a second, I thought about how to answer that.

Roman’s story wasn’t exactly a short one, and it still felt strange even to me when I thought about it. So

much about him was still a mystery.

But Irene deserved to know, especially since she hadn’t been around the pack house much these past fe

days.

So it made sense that she was asking now.

I shifted a little on the bench and looked at her.

“He was found at the border not long ago,” I said.

Irene frowned slightly.

“Found?”

“Yes,” I said. “By the patrol guards.”

Her expression immediately grew more serious.

“What happened to him?”

I let out a small breath.

“When they found him, he was lying near the edge of the territory. Just… there. Completely still.”

Irene’s brows knitted together.

“Still, as in unconscious?”

I shook my head slowly.

“They thought he was dead.”

Her eyes widened.

“Dead?”

“That’s what the guards said when they brought him in,” I replied. “He wasn’t moving. His pulse was barely

there.”

Irene leaned forward a little.

“What was wrong with him?”

“He was badly injured,” I said.

That was probably the biggest understatement I could make.

“He had deep cuts all over his body. Bite marks. Claw marks, even some that looked like they were from blade.” I paused slightly before adding.

Irene’s face tightened immediately.

For a moment, Irene didn’t say anything.

Her expression had softened now, sympathy clearly written all over her face.

“That’s horrible,” she said quietly.

“It is.”

“He stayed unconscious for a while. Dr. Adams did her best to stabilize him,” I went on. “When he finally

woke up, we started asking him questions.”

Irene tilted her head.

“And the only thing he could tell us was his name.”

“That’s it?”

“That’s it.”

I nodded.

“He remembered that his name was Roman… but nothing else.”

Irene blinked.

“No family? No pack?“.

“Nothing.”

Her face softened even more.

“That’s awful.”

“It really is.”

I remembered the confusion in Roman’s eyes the first time he woke up–the way he kept trying to answer

our questions and failing.

“You could tell he was trying to remember,” I said. “But every time he pushed for it, there was just…

nothing.”

“So he really doesn’t know where he came from?”

“No.”

“And he doesn’t know what happened to him?”

“Not until today. That’s what I was just explaining to your brother.”

Irene was quiet for a moment.

Then she sighed.

“I feel sorry for him.”

“So do I,” I said honestly.

Because no matter how strong Roman looked on the outside, waking up in a place where everyone else knew who they were while you had no idea about yourself… that couldn’t be easy.
