For a moment, Janet said nothing. 

Then she laughed. 

It wasn’t loud. It wasn’t amused. 

It was dry–sharp at the edges, like something that had long since lost patience. 

Darren didn’t like it. 

“You ruined everything, Darren,” she said.

end of it.” 

Her gaze lifted to meet his again. 

“But you couldn’t let it end there. You never do.” 

Darren’s jaw tightened. 

“I finished what needed to be finished,” he said flatly. 

“No,” Janet replied. “You interfered.” 

Darren’s patience thinned. 

“Get to the point, Janet.” 

Janet held his gaze for a second longer, then leaned back slightly. 

“You triggered something,” she said. “Something far beyond you.” 

That was enough. 

Darren exhaled sharply, irritation slipping through now. 

“I didn’t come here for stories,” he said. “Stop speaking in riddles and answer the question.” 

His voice dropped, sharper now. 

“Is Roman alive?”

“Yes.” 

The word was simple. 

Calm.

Darren stared at her.

Janet shook her head.

“And all you ended up doing,” Janet added, “was push him closer to what he was always meant to become.”

“I’m not here to listen to superstition and speculation,” he said. “What is done is done.”

Even if Darren refused to acknowledge it.

“You can’t be referring to me,” Darren said. 

“I am,” Janet replied. 

She leaned forward slightly now, her gaze steady. 

“I cannot believe you’re still talking about that,” she added. 

Darren’s patience snapped just a little. “You think this is a joke?” he asked. 

“No,” Janet said. “I think you’re blind… and deaf.”

She held his gaze.

Whatever restraint Darren had been holding onto slipped. 

Darren stood up and took a slow step forward, his voice lowering even more. 

“Janet, Janet, Janet. You’re already in this,” he said. 

Janet shifted in her chair a little.

Darren stepped closer, just one step, closing the distance enough to make the moment unavoidable. 

“So don’t sit there and act like this is beneath you now,” he said. “Like you get to decide where this stops.
