Chapter 180

Faye didn’t expect to see Alexander all dressed like he was about to close a billiondollar deal. The sight made her pause at the doorway.

He stood by the desk, focused on arranging some documents. The dark suit fit him perfectly -his hair brushed neatly back, though a few strands still refused to obey.

For a moment, she just stood there watching him, her own reflection a stark contrast- training outfit, boots dusty from the field, hair tied in a ponytail, faint marks still visible on her knuckles from sparring.

When he noticed her, a faint smile tugged at his lips. You’re staring again.”

I’m just surprised,Faye said, leaning one shoulder against the doorframe, feeling a little embarrassed. Didn’t know we had royalty visiting tonight.”

Alexander chuckled, straightening his cufflinks. I told you yesterday I had a business function this evening.”

You did?She frowned, trying to recall.

Yes,” he said easily, turning to face her fully. Or maybe it skipped your mind.”

Oh,she murmured, halfdistracted. Alright then.”

He gave her one of those lookshalf teasing, half approvingand she had to fight the urge to roll her eyes first.

So,” she said, pushing away from the doorway, you’re just going?”

Of course,” he replied, slipping on his watch. Can’t keep the businessmen waiting.”

Faye folded her arms. You’re going alone?”

Alexander’s brows arched slightly, a hint of amusement flickering in his eyes. Why? Are you offering to come with me?”

She scoffed and smirked. That’s not what I meant, and you know it.”

I’m just saying,” he continued, a smirk forming, if you want to accompany me, I could use the company. You’d look stunning in a dress tonight.”

Faye laughed a little. Alexander, she said, her voice turning serious now, you shouldn’t be going to such gatherings alone. Not with how things have been lately.”

He met her gaze, still smiling You worry too much.”

Someone has to.She moved closer to his desk, the scent of his cologne mixing with the faint lingering trace of paper and ink. It’s not just paranoia. You know there are still people out there who’d do anything to see you gone. You’ve made enemiesterrible ones.”

He sighed softly, glancing down to adjust his tie one last time. You make it sound like I’m walking into an ambush instead of a room full of rich, boring men talking about shares and

exports.”

That’s exactly the problem, she countered. You always assume it’s harmless until it’s not.”

He looked at her thenreally lookedand there was something behind that calm expression that softened, just slightly.

Are you saying I should bring my personal warrior along?he asked, a playful lilt in his tone.

Maybe,” she said, arching a brow. If you had one worth bringing.”

Ouch,he said, feigning offense. I do recall my personal warrior being quite skilled. Dangerous, even.”

Faye snorted. “That personal warrior of yours is useless right now without her wolf.”

The humor faded almost immediately. She hadn’t meant to sound that bitter, but the words came out before she could stop them.

Alexander’s jaw tightened slightly, his eyes flicking over her face. He crossed the distance between them and stopped just a step away.

Don’t say that again,he said quietly.

Faye blinked, It’s the truth.”

It’s not.His tone was firm. Wolf or no wolf, you are the strongest woman I’ve ever met. You just don’t see it right now because you’re measuring your worth against something else.”

Faye looked away, her throat tightening. Easy for you to say. You still have yours.”

”

That’s not what makes me who I am, Faye. And it’s not what makes you who you are either,he said.

She didn’t answer. She could feel his eyes on her, patient in that way that sometimes drove

her crazy.

Look,” she said finally, her voice low, you don’t have to make me feel better about it. I’m fine.

Alexander gave a small laugh under his breath. You always say that when you’re anything but fine.”

She shot him a glare, though a small smile tugged at her lips despite herself. You’re enjoying this way too much.”

Maybe a little.”

Mean,” she muttered, and he chuckled.

Still, she couldn’t shake the unease pressing against her chest.

You shouldn’t go alone,” she said again, softer this time. Please.”

Alexander studied her for a heartbeat, then nodded. I’m not going alone,” he said finally.

Her brows lifted slightly. “No?”

He shook his head. Cole’s coming with me.”

That eased herjust a little.

Good,” she said. At least he won’t let you wander into trouble without backup.”

He smiled faintly. You’re forgettingCole also tends to cause trouble.”

Then maybe you deserve each other, she shot back, a small grin appearing on her face.

He laughed a quiet, genuine laugh that reached his eyes.

At the gathering, Alexander blended into the gathering effortlessly, as usual.

Cole stood beside him, exchanging firm handshakes with a few investors. As far as the world knew, they were business partners representing the companyone of the most influential companies in the region. No one here needed to know that behind that front stood the Blood Crescent Pack and its Alpha.

It was supposed to be a simple event. Handshakes, polite words, deals in the making. Nothing complicated.

Until Patrick walked in.

Patrick looked composed, shoulders squared. But the moment his eyes caught Alexander’s figure across the room, everything in him went still.

His heart stopped for a secondthen began to hammer so loudly he swore someone nearby

could hear it.

It wasn’t possible.

Patrick’s gaze fixed on the man across the room. He laughed at something one of them said, his smile polite, his expression easy. There was no mistaking himAlexander. Alive.

Patrick nearly dropped his glass.

No. He couldn’t be. He couldn’t be alivehe stabbed Alexander himself.

Yet here he wasbreathing, standing, smiling.

Patrick’s blood ran cold.

Alexander turned his head slightly at that moment, as though sensing the weight of a stare from across the room. His gaze swept lazily over the crowdthen stopped. Their eyes met.

It was only a second, maybe two. But it stretchedheavy and electric.

Patrick couldn’t breathe.

Alexander didn’t flinch, didn’t startle. His expression remained perfectly composedcalm. But there it wasjust at the edge of his mouththe faintest trace of a smirk. One that said I see you. One that said You thought you buried me, didn’t you?

Patrick’s stomach twisted.

He turned his face away quickly, pretending to listen to someone beside him, but he could feel Alexander’s gaze still there, like the edge of a blade pressed against his skin. His palms were sweating now, the collar of his shirt suddenly too tight. He took a slow sip of wine to steady his hand, but it didn’t help. His fingers trembled against the glass.

It was impossible.

It had to be an illusiona trick of the light, a hallucination brought on by guilt he didn’t want to admit and sleepless nights. But nothat presence, that aura..

it was undeniably real.

He could hear his heartbeat in his ears. His thoughts raced. How? How could he be alive? Did someone find him? Heal him? Did the poison fail? None of those questions made sense.

Across the room, Alexander continued talking as if nothing had happened. He laughed lightly at another joke one of the men made. To any onlooker, he was the picture of easeconfident, selfassured, completely in control. But every now and then, his gaze flicked back toward Patrick, deliberate and sharp, the faint smirk never quite leaving his face.

It was enough to make Patrick feel like he was standing on trial before an unseen court.

Cole, oblivious to the tension, finally turned to Alexander as they wrapped up the conversation. You seem distracted,” he noted casually, swirling his drink.

Alexander glanced once more in Patrick’s direction before replying evenly, Just taking in the

crowd.”

Cole followed his gaze. Oh, look who’s here. Patrick. Alpha of North Ridge.”

He smiled faintly, raising his glass slightly toward Alpha Patrick across the room in silent acknowledgment. But Patrick didn’t respond. The man looked pale, sweating despite the airconditioned hall. His eyes darted toward Alexander, then away again like a cornered

animal.

Cole frowned. Is it just me, or is he acting strange?”

Alexander turned to him with a calm, almost lazy smile. “What do you mean?”

Cole chuckled. The man’s been staring at you like he’s seen a ghost.”

That earned a soft laugh from Alexanderlow and quiet. Maybe he has,” he said simply, before taking a sip of his drink.

Cole blinked, confused by the tone, but didn’t press. You two know each other well, don’t you? He’s been an ally of the pack for years.”

Alexander’s expression didn’t change. He was,” he replied, his tone smooth, measuredbut there was something beneath it, a quiet darkness. People change.”

Cole glanced at him but didn’t push further.

On the other hand, Patrick’s mind spiraled. He couldn’t focus on a single thing anyone said. Every time he dared glance up, he found Alexander still there, composed and breathin..a man who shouldn’t exist. The faint amusement in Alexander’s eyes was enough to make him feel physically sick.

Patrick wanted to leave, but his legs wouldn’t move. Every instinct screamed at him to run, but how could he? Not here. At least he was sure Alexander wouldn’t hurt him nownot in

front of humans.

Alexander shifted slightly, raising his glass in Patrick’s direction. It was a small, polite gestureone any observer would interpret as a professional acknowledgment. But Patrick understood perfectly. It wasn’t a greeting. It was a warning.

Cole leaned closer. You sure you’re not going to say hi? He looks like he’s waiting for you to.”

Alexander’s smile deepened slightly. Let him wait.”

Cole laughed, shaking his head.

Patrick finally excused himself from the group he’d been standing with, muttering something about needing air. He stumbled toward the exit, his composure cracking with every step. He could feel the weight of Alexander’s gaze following him.

Cole watched him go, brows raised. What’s wrong with him?”

Alexander didn’t answer. He set his glass down slowly, eyes still fixed on the spot where Patrick had disappeared. When he finally spoke, his voice was calm, low, almost detached.

Guilt has a way of doing that to a man.”

Cole frowned. Guilt?”
