Chapter 64

FAYE

We both turned to see who had called Alexander’s name, and Bella appeared.

Her eyes widened the second she spotted us, as if she’d just stumbled upon a scandal. Honestly, the look on her face was so dramatic she might as well have clutched her pearls and fainted. Instead, she froze midstep, staring like she was seeing a ghostor maybe like she wished she was seeing a ghost. Preferably mine.

I didn’t need anyone to explain her shock to me. Even I had to admit, this was a sight no one expected. Me, walking out of a building with Alexander. If I were in her shoes, I might’ve done a double take too.

But the way she looked at me like I was some insect crawling out of a rotten appleyeah, that told me her reaction wasn’t just surprise. It was jealousy. The pure, uncut kind that gnawed at your bones and made you wish someone else didn’t exist.

And the thing wasEver since she opened up to me herself about her relationship with Alexander, everything became too obvious.

And even before then, I’d noticed the way she lingered around him, all softvoiced and eagereyed. The way she thought herself more than what she was. The way she used every opportunity to remind me I didn’t belong. So her glare wasn’t new. It was justintensified now that she felt she had nothing to hid before me.

She finally decided to walk closer. She stopped inches in front of us, her gaze shifting between me and Alexander, but mostly, mostly settling on me.

Alexander stood there, waiting for her to spit out whatever words she’d come with.

I wanted to talk to you about something,” Bella said at last.

Her voiceugh. It wasn’t her usual sharp, bossy tone. No, this one was carefully softened, like honey dripping from a comb. Sweet enough to rot teeth. Sweet enough, apparently, for Alexander,

I almost gagged. She never spoke like that to anyone else. Only him.

Alexander’s brows lowered just slightly. “Can it wait?he asked. His tone was polite, but clipped, already half dismissive. I’m heading out right nowwith Faye.”

The last two words hit Bella like a slap to her pretty face.

Her eyes widened again, her mouth opening just a fraction. She blinked, and then it came: You’re going out withher?”

It wasn’t just the words, it was the expression on her face. The disrespect was obvious at this point.

My jaw clenched. Oh no, sweetheart. Not today.

Do you have a problem with that?I asked her directly, tilting my head and fixing her with a look that dared her to push me further. My voice came out steady, laced with just enough ice to make her shiver if she had half a brain.

And truth be told? If she’d opened her mouth and let one more ounce of disrespect fall from it, I wouldn’t have cared if Alexander was standing right there. I would’ve slapped the audacity clean off her face.

But Bella wasn’t stupidshe knew when to shut up.

Her jaw worked for a moment, teeth grinding behind her lips, but she didn’t answer me. Instead, she turned to Alexander, as if I’d ceased to exist. Good!

What I have to say is important,” she said quickly, her voice dropping even softer, almost desperate. It can’t wait.”

Alexander sighed. He wasn’t a man easily rattled, but the weight of his exhale told me he was already annoyed. Still, he inclined his head. Go on, then.”

But Bella didn’t take the opening. No, of course she didn’t. She flicked her eyes toward me- deliberately, and then back at him, her lashes fluttering. In private,” she said.

I felt the heat rising in my chest, but I didn’t need to respond to this very one. I simply turned on my heel and walked toward Alexander’s car. If she wanted her private little chat, fine. I wasn’t going to stand around like a prop in her pathetic play.

Leaning against the car, I crossed my arms and watched the scene unfold from a distance.

Bella wasted no time. She launched into her explanation with an unnecessary amount of hand gestures, her fingers flying like she was orchestrating some grand tragedy. I couldn’t hear the words, but her body language screamed pity me, believe me, protect me.

And then, the grand finale.

She stepped forward, all doeeyed and trembling lips, and wrapped her arms tightly around him. Hugged him as if she had a claim, as if she belonged there.

Then came a lingering kiss pressed boldly to his cheek, her lips dragging against his skin as

The worst part wasn’t even the kiss. No, it was the smirk she sent me over his shoulder.

Alexander had his back to me, oblivious. But Bella’s face was turned toward me, her eyes locking on mine, gleaming with triumph. A smirk tugged at her lips, mocking. As if she’d won something, and I was supposed to feel defeated.

I almost laughed.

I rolled my eyes. The whole thing was exhausting. She really thought she was in competition with me, as if her little stunts mattered in the grand scheme of things.

Did I care what she did with Alexander? No. Not really.

Okay. Maybe I cared a little. Maybe it burned just slightly to see her touch him like that, to see her push into the space I had never even considered mine. But it wasn’t the way she thought. It wasn’t jealousy of her. It was frustration at her arrogance. Frustration that she believed she could step over me and act like I was nothing.

She was fighting in a war I hadn’t even enlisted inmeanwhile, Alexander himself looked uncomfortable with her behavior. And yet she didn’t care, she was so desperate to prove she

was winning.

I shook my head, staring at my phonedoing nothinguntil her little display ended.

A few moments later, Alexander finally walked toward me. Let’s go,he said.
