January was sitting in Grandfather’s bedroom while a doctor was examining her lacerations and Thisbe held her hand.
Once she’d been undressed in the room, the realization she had glass shards inside her shirt, causing multiple cuts, had made Thisbe gasp and refuse to leave her. She’d helped the doctor with tweezers pulling tiny pieces of glass out of her flesh. There were also large bruises which were already apparent all over her torso and the doctor pointed out it was possibly from the seatbelt she’d been wearing.
Her body was aching and her neck hurt in a way that she knew the next day was likely going to be damn near intolerable.
Yet for all of it, while she sat there quietly letting the doctor stitch her forehead closed while Thisbe plucked glass from her body, all she could think of was Gulliver.
“He’s going to be okay,” Thisbe whispered.
“He didn’t even flinch.” She spoke through a clenched jaw. “He faked being unconscious or maybe he really was and he passed out after he knew I was hidden but I feel like he was faking it, Thisbe. They were not gentle. He said he had a broken arm. His arm had a chunk of glass,” she held her hands several inches apart, “jammed into his shoulder. Yet he didn’t even make a 4:44
single sound.”

“Mr. Raptis has an incredibly high pain tolerance.” The doctor said seriously. “I travel with the family and was brought in yesterday because we were thinking there could be injuries from the events of the night before. I have worked with him for many years. You know how I froze your forehead with the injection before I started these stitches? He would forgo the freezing and he wouldn’t even flinch.”
“He, Ford and Glenn used to test how much pain he could take when they were younger,” Thisbe agreed.
“Just because he has a tolerance to pain, doesn’t mean he’s not hurt, though. The injuries were real. There is a risk to having injuries.”
“I agree but he has a good incentive to be strong, January,” Thisbe used a tiny bottle of saline to rinse another laceration out. “I think I got them all.”
“I hate this.” January whispered as the doctor covered her sutures with a big plaster.
“Glenn is rallying the troops.” Thisbe spoke reassuringly. “We will get him back. They have eyes on him. Duchess actually has him in a safehouse.”
“Are you decent?” Glenn’s voice called from the doorway.
“No but come in anyway. My nips are covered,” January spoke bluntly.
“I see the pain killers are working already,” he made big eyes at heras he stepped into the room and then he winced. There’s44

“She also has symptoms of a minor traumatic brain injury and severe whiplash. My recommendations are that she should remain in bed resting,” the doctor said with a tone which told the room he already knew she wasn’t going to obey.
“I will rest when Gulliver is back with me. You can all tuck me right up next to him. That crazy bitch is going to rape him. I can’t let her get away with it, Glenn. I mean it. I’m coming with you.”
“I know. That’s why I’m here. I’m going to go say goodnight to Mitsos. We’re moving out in thirty minutes. If you want to say goodnight to Kaylee before we go then go do it.”
“What do I even tell her?”
“That you were in a car accident. That her dad was hurt and you’re going to go check on him and make sure he’s okay. That you need her to be brave and know that her daddy is coming home to her. You can lie to her and say the doctor said no kids yet, but you’ll take her to him the minute you’re allowed. She is a little girl, but she is going to be vovoi. You can’t keep her completely in the dark.”
“You want me to tell her that her father is hurt from a car
accident?”
“Yes. There’s not make–up enough in the world to hide that,” he waved his fingers around her face
“You can’t expect January to tell a seven–year–old little girl her father was run off the road by enemies and he’s hurt!”

“This is too much,” she stood up, swaying on her feet, while she clutched the small hand towel over her breasts. “I can’t do this.” Her eyes watered and she tried to move around Glenn.
Glenn grabbed her by the shoulders and gave her a shake earning a clicked tongue of reproach from the doctor. “Listen to me, January! You are the wife of the vovoi of the Raptis family. Pull your shit together. You can cry when we get that bitch in the ground and Gulliver is tucked into your bed. Right now, you have a responsibility to your family to give them updates and let them know you are handling shit like the boss I know you are. You are not going to let Kaylee grow up to be my mother who has her head buried so deep in the sand she doesn’t see anything happening around her.”
She wiped tears off her cheek and then nodded, “let me get dressed and I’ll go see Kaylee and my parents.”
“You have thirty minutes and then we ride. We know they’re in a safe house. We know Duchess has been screaming at her lawyer and demanding they get a doctor in and they’re trying to find someone to come treat Gulliver. The lawyer is on her grandfather’s payroll and has been told from the beginning the minute Duchess gets released from prison, he is to get the crew

realizes she’s the last one standing. We’ve wiped them all out. Her mother, her father, her uncles and aunts and her grandfather. All gone. There’s one left and her little band of merrymakers. We’re going to take them all out tonight, January. Go Kiss your daughter because frankly, someone like Duchess isn’t going down without a fight and someone could get hurt a lot worse than this.”
He turned on his foot and walked out, and January felt her spine stiffen with his words.
