“First,” Gulliver motioned to Lottie, “I need you to come stand over here. Can you do that Lottie? Can you come over here with January?”

“And he was twenty–one.” Gulliver wasn’t taking his eyes off Davis now. “He was working at the docks with his older brother for my grandfather. His older brother Petros was almost thirty.”
“What did he do?” January whispered seriously as she watched Davis twitching his hand moving to his waist where she knew he had a sidearm. She looked to Lottie and jutted her chin in the direction of the weapon she knew was out back.
“Petros was part of a crew working for my grandfather unloading some shipments and they were a man short, so he brought his younger brother in. Davis, or Darius as he was, worked as a cook at a family restaurant making meager earnings and so the opportunity to make more money was exciting. He was thrilled to come make extra money working my grandfather.”
January looked at Davis beginning to get concerned about the way the man’s face was transforming from the pleading quality and irritation he’d taken when she’d been confronting him on his own to one of what she could only describe as pure hatred.

Petros thought, since my grandfather told him he was the boss of the crew, that it gave him right over me and I let that ride. I let it happen because I wanted them to get cocky, get comfortable. I took the ribbing. I took the pushing. I was a kid, but I knew I was better than that arrogant fucker.”
At the insult to his brother, Davis bristled and January swallowed nervously and pushed Lottie to the back room. Davis had a flush moving up his neck from under his shirt collar to his chin and his jaw was clenched so tight now January wondered if his molars weren’t cracking under the
tension.
This was a man who was on the cusp of an explosion and January was suddenly very worried about what the man was capable of.
