“I’m stressed. I’m worried. There are a lot of changes happening all at once. I feel like a giant fool for not asking more questions back then and seeing more than what Davis was telling us.” He made a face, “he really has a thing for you?”

“That’s creepy as shit considering we know he put cameras in the house.”
“Gulliver said the same thing.”
“You’re really not getting back with him?”
“Dad, all I want to do is learn to coparent with him. If we can be friends and give Kaylee the security she needs with two parents who aren’t at each other’s throats, that will be amazing. However, I am not ready to jump back into a relationship with a man I don’t trust. I simply don’t trust him. Do I still feel something for him? Yes. I can’t deny it Dad. We always had great chemistry. If I were a younger, inexperienced girl like I was when I knew him before, I’d be in his bed and in his arms without a second thought. He’s slick and suave and him telling me how he hasn’t stopped loving me, has never dated, has never wanted to date and still says I’m his wife is a lot.” She admitted

quietly. “There is a part of me Dad who wants to take the risk and jump back in with him. It would be so easy to say I forgive him and move forward and just be a family, me, him, and Kaylee.” She wiped a tear off her cheek, “but I can’t forget. Seeing him in person is bringing that moment back to me. Standing in the hallway, outside his office, holding my pregnancy report in my hand and hearing him talk so coldly to Thisbe. It hurt so much, Dad. He fooled me completely and I couldn’t stop thinking, which was the real, Gulliver? Was it the man who spoiled me rotten and made me feel I was the best thing in the world? He acted like I was his everything. Or” she swallowed, “was it the incoming vovoi who was cold and callous and can be cruel with his words. Which version of him was the act and which is the real? I simply don’t trust my judgement.”
“Can I make an observation?”
“Of course,” she rested her chin on her palm as she leaned on her table. “I value your thoughts, Dad.”
“I think it’s possible for a man to be a bit of both. In his role, what he needs to do, I imagine he has to compartmentalize. He probably needs to do things to keep his family safe, to do the hard tasks which keep his family business moving and to accomplish what he needs to do, he needs to be hard, cold, callous as you described.”
“I guess.”
“But that’s probably the role he needs to put on for the rest of

the world. It’s the façade and sometimes that façade is going to leach into his everyday life. He can be a prick because he has to do it enough in his businesses that it’s bound to carry over.”
She listened to her father waiting for the words of wisdom she knew was coming.
“However, seeing him with you, with Kaylee, the way he treats his sister and the depths of his dedication to protecting his grandfather that there is a man in him which loves deeply. You can’t tell me that a cold, callous, bastard would agree to marry a woman just to catch her scheming to protect a man who was giving him a tough time. He gave up a part of his life to try to protect his grandfather. He risked everything, foolishly I agree, to try to keep his grandfather safe. A man who loves deeply will do anything for the people he loves.”
She bit her bottom lip.
“I think there are many facets to every human being, January. He’s quite possibly the most complex individual I’ve ever met. He has to be the boss. He has to be the protector and the bad guy. He has to toe the line for family business. He’s a CEO of a huge company. He deals with corporate espionage all the time and even from people his family considered friends. He runs his men with military precision. I’ve watched him give them signals with nothing more than a finger movement. It’s impressive.”
“You’re saying he’s the bad guy because he has to be the bad guy.”

“I’m saying that the person he has to be to the rest of the world, is not the same man he gets to be when he’s alone with his family. He loves deeply. I think he found love in you January and he’s a man desperate to have that again in his life. He laid eyes on Kaylee, and it was instant love. The same way as the day you were put in my hands, I fell hopelessly in love with my daughter and vowed to protect you with every bit of me, he did the same thing the minute he saw her. He is a man very capable of love. I don’t believe his love is fabricated or faked or phony.”
“You think I should go back to him.”
“Nope. I’m not saying that. I’m saying, you’re trying to pigeonhole him in one category or another and I think an enigmatic man like him isn’t someone you can do that with. He can love. He can be cold. He can care. He can destroy. Whether you give him another chance or not is your choice. I’ll support you either way. I agree with you testing waters and seeing if there is more out there for you but,” he gave her a smile, “don’t be so hellbent on protecting yourself, you cut off your nose to spite your face. What you want and need could be in someone else, but it could be right in front of you too. Don’t let bitterness cloud your heart, January. Open your heart and your mind and do what is best for you.”
She slid off her seat and moved into his embrace. “I love you, Dad.”

“Nope. I told Gulliver he should buy me the house on South Street. He said he would. Didn’t even balk.”
“He’s building a house,” Terrance pulled his head back to look at her in confusion.
“We’re going to live separately, Dad.”
“Interesting. Well, I want Kaylee at least a couple of nights a week and you need to sit down and talk to your mother without screaming.”
“I will.” She rested her head on his shoulder and sighed. “Can we just sit here for a bit first though?”
“Procrastination works for me. Like I said. Too much change is happening too fast. I’m happy to pretend nothing is changing for a few minutes.”
