Gulliver walked into the house without knocking, an easy
breezy smile on his face, arrogant with the belief they were back on level playing ground. He lied about their marriage. She hid a child.
January could read his posture and grimaced as she rose from her place on the sofa to glare at him.

“What a pity.” He made wide eyes at her and looked around the room searchingly.
January wondered what he was looking for and then he moved with the relaxed ease of someone in complete control and walked to a bookshelf in the corner of the room and lifted a photo which held January and Kaylee in it on the day Kaylee was born. He was wordless as he flipped it over, undid the back of the frame and pulled the photo out. He studied it carefully and then slid it into his inside his coat pocket. He looked around and found a more recent photo of Kaylee blowing out candles on her seventh birthday. He repeated his actions ignoring Analia’s

“She’s beautiful. Ford is correct though. She and Mitsos could be twins. We’ve been teasing Mitsos for years saying he is Thisbe’s little double from when she was a child. Analia gave a huff and looked at January, “I told you I could still smell it in here. Seven hundred dollars to clean this place out and it still smells of rodent.”
His low laugh was grating all over January’s skin. “Technically it’s not a rodent. It’s more like a weasel. It was quite cute. I’ve been watching Henry’s progress on the rehab center’s platform. He’s doing well.”
“You’re not here to talk about a fucking skunk.”
“I don’t recall you swearing as much as you have today, my love.” He turned to face her with a glint in his eye. “It would be quite sexy if your parents weren’t in the room. With elders in the room though, it’s unattractive.”

Yet, you have the nerve to judge me over a few misplaced fears and a misunderstanding which if I was ever allowed to explain, could have cleared up quite a bit. It means, I’m seven years of missing out on my child. I missed everything from first steps to first words and first day of school. Knowing how much my brother treasured all of those memories with his son, I’m already feeling saddened. “We didn’t,” January spoke up, her words catching in her throat and she rubbed her neck nervously. “I um, I told her she didn’t have a dad.”

“Well, that was very much off the mark. We can run with it if you want. I can play the man who donated in the clinic, but it is highly probable someone in my family will slip up at some point.” He looked past her shoulder towards the door, “speaking of people who slip up too much. Thisbe, are you feeling better?” He looked around the room, “my sister spent a good amount of time dry heaving into a bag in the back of the car when she realized what you’d done. Thisbe is feeling quite guilty that her inaction back then allowed you to abscond with her niece. It’s made her feel quite putrid.”
January looked at Thisbe and noted she did seem quite green around the gills and was walking slower than usual as she moved to enter the house. Her eyes were darting to ever photograph and memory around the space and taking it all in. Thisbe’s bottom lip quivered as she stared at a photo of Analise, January and Kaylee at the beach with the caption “three generations.”
Thisbe shot January an angry glance, “how could you hide her from us?”
