< Second Chance for the Mafia Prince
Safe Part II
“So, there are forty–four people protecting us at the zoo?” Darwin asked with a serious expression.
“Yes. Because my family is very rich and sometimes other people see wealthy people and think they can take what ours is. To keep robbers from stealing from us, we keep security.”
“Kaylee said the police officers were trying to prove her dad is a crook. Are you a crook?” Darwin asked bluntly.
“I’m not a crook but I would break all the rules in the world if it meant keeping you, Kaylee and Mitsos safe.” He looked up at Ernst, “and you too. You’re safe with us.”
Ernst swallowed the lump in his throat as he looked at January who looked ready to leap across a park bench to lunge at the officers. “Who keeps us from getting arrested from her rage?”
The group laughed as January, taking advantage of the way Glenn blocked the view of the kids from the officers, flipped the two men off. Ernst laughed at her actions while Thisbe copied her using both hands.
Glenn moved to stand up and rested a hand on Ernst’s shoulder, “we have a full security team here. Try to relax and enjoy the day. I would rather die than put my son in danger. There is nowhere safer than where we are right now. wouldn’t

risk him or Kaylee and now that falls to you and Ernst.”
“Thank you for reassuring us.”
“It’s my pleasure,” Glenn said with a smile, “which is the first of the pleasures –”
“Don’t finish that,” Thisbe covered his mouth and made apologetic eyes at Ernst, “I swear, Ernst, I’m the only one in our family who was born with any manners.”
“Let’s continue on, shall we?” Gulliver encouraged everyone to keep walking.
His grandfather cleared his throat, “yes, let’s keep moving.” He held up his phone, “also, I might have made a mistake and told your mother you’re all dropping like flies and she’s insisting that they are flying over. My bad.”
“Oh, damn it,” Glenn muttered, “she’s fine but Dad’s an ass.”
“What is wrong with your father?” Ernst asked curiously.
Glenn rubbed his chin, “he’s the kind of guy who sucks at emotions and likes number, logic and rationality to the point that he would quantify his own mother’s love in data points.”
“He’s not so bad,” Thisbe said with a giggle.

Gulliver nodded, “no, he’s worse but he’s our father and even if it takes him a power point laid out with gridlines, bar graphs, and pie charts, he has proven he loves us deeply. He and Glenn but heads because Glenn opted to leave the family business to start his own engineering firm in New York.”
“You’re an engineer?” Ernst asked Glenn.

“A masters, not a doctorate yet but since Gully got his, I’ve been working on it. It’s a lot of work though when you have a kid, you work full time, and you have family business to tend to.”
“Family business, right,” Ernst cleared his throat and looked to January as if remembering what they’d talked about.
“Yes. Family business. You have nothing to worry about, Ernst. We can keep you as sheltered and away from it as you want.” Glenn reassured him.
“Not when it’s following you.”
“They would still follow us if it weren’t for my business,” Grandfather piped up. “Money always brings surveillance and security risks. Always.”
Gulliver’s phone rang and he looked at the number and then answered it quickly. He spoke rapidly in Greek and January immediately noted the way Grandfather and Glenn both 3/6

stiffened and looked to him curiously.
“What is happening?” January asked Thisbe quietly.
She was stunned when Ernst answered instead, “Gulliver is telling whoever it is he’s talking to that they better get someone rounded up and locations on them now.”
“You speak Greek?” Glenn was momentarily distracted from eavesdropping on his brother to shoot Ernst a curious glance.
“My father was Greek. He died when I was six but to keep his memory alive, I learned the language.”
“We are a match made in heaven, Ernst,” Glenn squeezed his bicep and motioned for the kids to walk to the next enclosure.
The kids ran ahead and Gulliver stepped back in line with them, his voice terse and his jaw tight. “Davis made bail and guess where the first fucking place he drove to when he left jail.”
“What do you mean he made bail?” Glenn hissed, “he’s a flight risk.”
“They took his passports and froze his assets. He’s not to leave the country.”
“Where did he go?” January questioned hating the way her 4/6

voice trembled with rage and fear.
“Ziogas. He went to visit Ziogas.”
“Duchess?”
“Her father.” He made a frustrated hiss and looked at his father, “you know what should have been done. Instead, you gave an old man loyalty he didn’t deserve.”
“It is not too late.” Grandfather grunted.
January was stunned when Ernst cleared his throat and muttered under his breath.
“I bet I have something in my lab to help.”
Glenn slowly turned to Ernst and then looked down at his own waist, “if I wasn’t hot for you before, I sure as fuck am now.”
