Aria pov 

“Come with me.” Damien helped me stand. “I’ll drive carefully. We’ll be back before the doctors even notice you’re gone.” 

“That’s a terrible idea,” I said. 

“And yet you’re already putting on your shoes,” he observed with a smile. 

“Fine.” I grabbed my jacket. “But if Olivia kills us for this, I’m blaming you.” 

The drive to the lake house took hours. Dawn was breaking as we pulled up to the secluded property, all glass and stone and surrounded by pine trees. 

Richards met us at the door. “Ms. Monroe, you should be in the hospital.” 

“I’m fine.” I pushed past him. “Where’s Noah?” 

“Still sleeping. He was up late asking about you both.” Richards looked at Damien. “Sir, we’ve had no issues. No suspicious activity. The property is secure.” 

“Good.” Damien’s hand found the small of my back. “We just need to see him.” 

Noah’s room was painted in his favorite dinosaur theme–a concession from when this used to be Damien’s childhood refuge. Our son was curled up in the bed, stuffed T–Rex clutched to his chest, looking peaceful and safe. 

“He’s okay,” I whispered, tears pricking my eyes. “He’s really okay.” 

“Because of you.” Damien pulled me close. “Because you kept him safe. Because you were brave enough to face Marcus instead of running” 

“We kept him safe,” I corrected. “Together.” 

We stood there for a long time, just watching Noah sleep. The simple act of seeing him breathe, seeing him safe, felt like the greatest gift in the world. 

“Mama?” Noah’s sleepy voice made us both jump. “Daddy? You’re here!” 

He scrambled out of bed and launched himself at us. I caught him despite the pain in my ribs, holding him tight. 

“We’re here, baby.” I kissed his messy hair. “We’re all here.”

139 Chapter 139: Their trip 

“Did you catch the bad man?” Noah pulled back to look at us. “Uncle Richards said you were catching a bad man who took your sister.” 

Damien and I exchanged glances, we had agreed to be honest with Noah in 

age–appropriate ways. 

“Yes,” Damien said, crouching to Noah’s level. “We caught him. And Aunt Vivian is safe 

now.” 

“Good.” Noah hugged Damien fiercely. “Cause family protects each other. Even when they’re mad at each other. Right, Mama?” 

“Right, baby.” My throat was tight. “Even when they’re mad at each other.” 

“So Aunty is coming to family dinner now?” Noah asked hopefully. “Since you saved her?” 

I looked at Damien, who gave me a slight nod–your call. 

“I don’t know yet,” I said honestly. “Aunt Vivian and I need to talk first. But Noah? What you said is right. Family does protect each other. And that’s what we did.” 

“I’m proud of you.” Noah said it so seriously, so matter–of–factly, that I nearly burst into tears. “You were really brave.” 

“Thank you, sweetheart.” I hugged him again. “Now, do you want to make breakfast with Daddy while Mama rests her sore ribs?” 

“You got hurt?” Noah’s eyes went wide. 

“Just a little.” I showed him the tape under my shirt. “But the doctors fixed it. I’m okay 

now.” 

“I’ll protect you.” Noah grabbed his T–Rex. “Me and Rex will keep you safe.” 

“My heroes.” I smiled, ruffling his hair. “What would I do without you?” 

Later, while Noah and Damien made pancakes (more like Damien made pancakes while Noah helped by making a mess, I stood on the deck, looking out at the lake. The water was still, reflecting the sky, which was peaceful and quiet. 

Everything in our lives hadn’t been for months.“You should be resting” Olivia appeared beside me with coffee. “And before you ask–yes, I followed you from the hospital because someone needs to keep you from reopening those ribs.” 

“You’re the best friend ever,” I said, accepting the coffee gratefully.

“I know.” She leaned against the railing. “So. You saved your terrible sister. Declared your love for your reformed ex–husband. And survived being shot, what an eventful day.” 

“You could say that.” I sipped the coffee. “Liv, am I crazy for wanting to forgive Vivian? For wanting to help Marcus get treatment instead of just throwing him in prison 

forever?” 

“Probably.” Olivia smiled slightly. “But it’s the kind of crazy that makes you you. The kind that rebuilt your life from nothing and gave Damien a second chance when he didn’t deserve it. The kind that makes Noah so confident that family protects each 

other even when they’re mad.” 

“I’m tired of being angry,” I admitted. “Tired of revenge and hatred and all of it. I just want peace.” 

“Then choose peace.” Olivia squeezed my shoulder. “Forgive Vivian. Help Marcus if you can. Build your family and your life and let go of the past. You’ve earned that, Aria. 

You’ve more than earned it.” 

“What if they hurt us again?” 

“Then you deal with it then.” Olivia’s voice was firm. “But you can’t live in fear of what might happen. You have to choose trust, choose love, choose peace–and have faith that you’re strong enough to handle whatever comes.” 

“When did you get so wise?” I asked. 

“I’ve always been wise.” She grinned. “You’re just finally listening.” 

Inside, Noah’s laughter rang out, followed by Damien’s amused curse as something crashed. 

“Your boys need supervision,” Olivia observed. “Before they burn down the kitchen.” 

“They’re fine.” But I was already moving toward the door. “Probably.” 

We walked inside to find Noah covered in flour, Damien trying to clean pancake batter off, and the kitchen looking like a bomb had gone off. 

“We’re making your food!” Noah announced proudly. “It’s gonna be delicious!” 

“It’s going to be something,” Damien said dryly, but his eyes were soft as he looked at 

our son.

“I can see that.” I laughed, taking in the disaster. “Do you boys need help?” 

“Nope!” Noah shook his head. “We got this! You just sit and rest your hurt ribs.” 

“Okay then.” I settled at the kitchen table, watching my chaotic, messy, perfect little family attempt to cook. 

Later That Morning 

The hospital had called–Vivian was awake and asking for me. “You don’t have to do this now,” Damien said as we drove back. “You just survived being shot, you are entitled to 

rest.” 

“I need to do this.” I stared out the window. “Before I lose my nerve.” 

Vivian was in a private room, looking small and pale against the white sheets. When I entered, she started crying immediately. 

“Aria.” Her voice was hoarse. “You came, after everything–you came.” 

“I said I would.” I sat in the chair beside her bed, maintaining distance. “How are you feeling?” 

“Physically? Fine. Emotionally?” She laughed bitterly. “I’m a mess. Aria, I-” She stopped, struggling for words. “Marcus told me what he was going to do. That he was going to kill you unless you gave him Noah. And I” Her voice broke. “I was terrified. Terrified that I’d destroyed my sister for nothing, that you’d die hating me.” 

“I don’t hate you,” I said quietly. “I did, for a long time. But Vivian, hatred was eating me alive. Making me cruel. Making me into someone I didn’t recognize.” 

“So you forgive me?” Her voice was hopeful, desperate. 

“I’m working on it.” I met her eyes. “Forgiveness isn’t instant, Vivian. It’s a process. A choice I have to make every day. But I’m choosing it. For my sake, not yours.” 

“I don’t deserve it.” Tears streamed down her face. “I was so jealous of you my whole life. You were smarter, kinder, more talented. Everything came so naturally to you while I had to work twice as hard for half the recognition. And instead of being proud of my sister, I” She stopped. “I tried to destroy you.” 

“Why?” I leaned forward. “Help me understand, Vivian. What did you think destroying me would accomplish?” 

“I don’t know.” She wiped her eyes. “In the moment, it felt like justice. Like if I could

tear you down, I’d finally be enough. But all it did was make me into a monster. Someone even I don’t recognize.” 

“Then change,” I said simply. “Get help. Work through your jealousy and insecurity with a therapist. Become someone you can be proud of.” 

“And then?” She looked at me with red–rimmed eyes. “Then can we be sisters again?” 

I was quiet for a long moment. “I don’t know, Vivian. Maybe. Someday. But not now. Not for a long time. Right now, I need space. Time to heal, to build my family without worrying about you sabotaging it.” 

“I understand.” She nodded, more tears falling. “I’ll stay away. I’ll do the therapy, the community service, whatever the plea deal requires. And Aria?” Her voice cracked. “Thank you. For saving my life. For not letting Marcus kill me even though you had every reason to want me dead.” 

“I didn’t do it for you,” I said honestly. “I did it for me. For Noah. So I could look in the mirror and see someone who chose mercy over revenge.” 

“Still.” She reached for my hand tentatively, and I let her take it. “You saved me. And I’m going to spend the rest of my life trying to be worthy of that.” 

“Then start by leaving Ravenwood,” I said. “Get a fresh start somewhere else. Build a life that isn’t about competing with me or tearing me down. Just–be happy, Vivian. For yourself.” 

“I’ll try.” She squeezed my hand. “I really will try.” 

When I left her room, Damien was waiting in the hall. He pulled me into his arms without a word. “How do you feel?” he asked. 

“Lighter,” I admitted. “Like I set down a weight I’d been carrying for years.” 

“Good.” He kissed my forehead. “Because Aria? You deserve to feel light. You deserve peace and happiness and all the good things. And I’m going to make sure you get them.” 

“We’re going to make sure we both get them,” I corrected. “Together, as partners.” 

“As partners,” he agreed. As we walked toward the exit, I glanced back at Vivian’s room one last time.
