Chapter 62
Gemma
I stand outside the warehouse and take a breath. I thought about coming in disguise, but a disguise would only make it impossible. for me to get in.
Instead, I’m going to have to rely on the fact that people will recognize me to get inside and do what I need to do.
Maybe, for once, it will be good for people to think I’m useless for anything but counting inventory.
“Gemma,” one of the guards says as I approach the door. He takes a drag from a cigarette, then throws it down and grinds it out with his heel. “Thought you quit.”
“Yeah,” I say, rubbing the back of my neck with one hand and giving him an embarrassed’smile. “I just left one of my jackets here. Didn’t realize it before because it’s been a warm few
weeks.”
The guard grunts and stands aside, and I walk past into the cavernous indoor space.
While I’m glad it was that easy, part of me is also angry about it.
They assume I’m harmless because I have no wolf, and because Cassian never assigned me any kind of weapon or let me handle

anything more dangerous than knock–off designer purses.

But I’m not harmless. I’m more dangerous than any of them give me credit for.
Today, Cassian is going to feel the effects of what I can do, even if he has no idea who is responsible for it.
A little something inside me doesn’t want to do this. He’s made it clear that, for whatever reason, he suddenly wants me.
But I can’t forgive him for kicking my mom off the list for that medication, and I can’t forget the last three years of neglect.
I make my way inside. A few people working in between the warehouse’s towering metal shelves notice me and call out my name. I smile and wave at them but keep walking.
To get the data I need, I’m going to have to access the computer in Cassian’s office. I hope he’ll be out. Flying, meeting other crime bosses at The Pub, or doing some other criminal activity.
But when I climb the stairs to get to the short hallway where Cassian has his office–as well as a conference room, Liam’s office, and a few other rooms–I realize I’m out of luck.
Cassian is in there. I can see him through one of the office windows that take up half the wall.
Most of them have blinds over them, but one is open. He sits at

his desk, working on the exact computer I need to access.

I take a breath and mutter, “I guess I need to switch to plan B.”
Just as I’m about to knock on his door, I hear a voice coming from the conference room. I sneak closer and look.
Reyna is inside. She’s directing some kind of meeting. It sounds like she’s berating the engineers for something to do with hidden storage compartments for smuggled goods.
“It’s too obvious!” she says. “We have to come up with better hiding places!”
On the screen, I see schematics for one of the planes.
I’m no engineer, and I definitely don’t have Reyna’s Ivy League education, but I can see exactly where they’re going wrong.
There’s no time to interfere with that, though. Somehow, I have to get Cassian out of his office.
I think about just hiding in the shadows of the hallway and waiting for him to leave. But I know how he works. He could be in there for hours.
The hallway has no hiding spots. Sooner or later, Reyna’s meeting will end and I’ll be spotted.
I only have one choice.

So, I take a deep breath, go up to his door, and knock.
“Come in,” Cassian calls in his deep, sexy voice.
I take one more bracing breath, then push the door open.
“Hey, husband,” I say, strolling inside with my hands in my hoodie pockets like I own the place. “How’s it going?”

Cassian instantly tears his eyes from his computer screen. Then he gets up and walks toward me.
“You,” he says. “What are you doing here? Last I heard, all you were interested in was staying as far from me as possible.”
I bite my lip. When he gets close to me, I side step him, then move so I’m on the side of the room closer to the computer while he’s still close to the door.
“I just forgot this hoodie here,” I say, lying through my teeth. “Then…since I was here…I thought I’d see you.”
Cassian’s eyes darken, and he suddenly looks at me with desire.
“You wanted to see me? I haven’t heard that from you in a
while.”
I shrug, “Maybe I’m starting to miss you.”

I intend the words to be a lie, but when they come out of my mouth, I realize they aren’t.
I have missed him. Every time I see him it’s like being able to breathe again.
He comes up to me and puts his finger under my chin. I look into his midnight sky eyes.
Suddenly, I’m not sure if I want to do this hacking thing
anymore.
