I can hear Reyna crying into the phone. “Please, Cassian. She’s in the hospital. She really needs that medicine and they won’t give it to her!”
I stand there watching him, and I can’t help the mocking smile that plays across my lips.
“You’ll never choose me,” I say. “Just go.”
Cassian looks at me and his knuckles turn white as he grips his phone. It looks like he might break it.
Then he exhales and says, “I’m on my way, Reyna. Don’t worry. Aunt Angela will be fine.”
He hands up, gives me a hesitant glance, then turns and walks away down the hall.
I stand there, trembling.
I don’t think I’ve shaken him off the trail of finding out I’m Moonlight. He’s not an idiot. But I’ve delayed him for now.

downstairs slowly and find Zina waiting for me.
“I just saw Cassian leave,” she says. “His driver pulled out like a

I give her a wry smile. “Reyna called. She needs him. Her mom was in an accident.”
Zina sighs as she looks at me. “Let me guess. You’ve changed your mind about going out.”
“Yeah. I’ve changed my mind. I want to go visit my mom and make sure she’s really getting those meds.”
“All right,” Zina says. “No worries. I’ll call Jace.”
She winks at me, then we both hail different cabs. She goes for her night out, and I head to Hope Moon Hospital.
I call ahead and learn that, yes, they’ve already given some of the experimental medication to my mom. She’s lucid. Almost normal.
I get there and go to the elevator. Out of the corner of my eye, I see someone pacing back and forth in the hall. They don’t go into any rooms, and something feels off about them.
But when I turn to look, the figure is gone.
I shrug it off, get on the elevator, and take it up to the mental health floor.
My mom is awake and waiting for me when I get there. She

smiles brightly and says, “Gemma! Where’s Cassian?”
I bite back an exasperated sigh and automatically say, “Working.”

My mom tilts her head. The gesture makes my heart ache. This really is a miracle drug. She’s so much like her normal self right
now.
“Sweetie, what’s with that face? Have you and Cassian been arguing?”
My entire body goes tense. I hate lying to my mother. I go sit on the bed next to her, then tuck a stray lock of her red hair behind her car. “No, Cassian and I are fine. You’re reading too much into it.”
My mom gives me a skeptical look. “Am I?”
“Yeah, Mom.” I force a laugh. “No worries.”
She studies me for a moment longer, then takes my hand. “You have to make sure you talk to each other. Don’t keep secrets from each other, and don’t let him lie to you!”
I know she’s just trying to save me from the pain she went through in her own marriage. My father was a lying, cheating piece of shit.
Even when he was cheating on her every day, he was able to

I know she doesn’t want that for me.

My mom sniffles, and I realize thinking of her own past is too much for her. I reach up and gently wipe the tears from her eyes with my fingers.
“Don’t cry, mom,” I say, even though I suddenly want to cry, myself. “I promise I’m happy.”
I feel a pang of bitterness in my heart, but I ignore it. I have to.
“It’s not just your father I hate,” my mom whispers quietly. “It’s myself, for not being able to give you a better life. For letting him stick us with his debts while those other two…”
She trails off, sobbing softly.
“Those other two” are Reyna and her mother, Angela. Dad managed to leave them the little money he had left while leaving my mom and I with enough debt that only my marriage to Cassian stopped us from being killed.
I stay until my mom falls asleep, stroking her hair. When she’s out, I leave her room and find Dr. Rojas.
“You got the medication!” he says brightly.
“I did,” I say, much more seriously than him. “And I need you to

do something for me. Don’t tell anyone about it. Not even my husband.”
If Cassian didn’t know I’d switched it around already, he’d figure it out soon. But this would buy me some time.
“Of course,” says the doctor. “I’d be happy to do that for you.”
I nod and leave the room. It’s been a long day, and very eventful. I’m still wearing that lace dress, like I might be going out somewhere.
But all I want now is cozy pajamas and maybe some ice cream. Then I want to rest.
My thoughts are disrupted when my phone rings. I pull it out of my pocket. My eyebrows go up when I see who’s calling.
It’s Cassian’s aunt, Sibille Blackwell. Claire’s mother.
What could the old witch possibly want with me?
