Chapter 81
Gemma
Cassian changed into something simple–a black casual shirt made of fine fabric and well–fitted gray pants. Simple but expensive.
He must have just washed up. His hair was still a little damp. I could smell the woody scent. His scent.
He always looking so hot, I thought, even as I tried to
concentrate on my cards and not his face. “Are you crazy? Wake up!,” I told myself.
“What’s making you smile?” Sibille said. “You think you’re going to win this?”
I glanced at her and let out a small cough, hiding the smile that crept up before I even noticed it. Just as I was about to throw out a card, Cassian quickly stopped me. My hand froze even as I turned to look at him. He frowned a little bit before quickly muttering a few words. “The Ace of Spades.”
Following his orders, I tossed down the Ace of Spades.
Nathalia shot at me. “You still need a man’s help.”
Maybe if it wasn’t for this card, she would have won.

“Awwn… Sorry about that,” I said. “Maybe, next time try to have a man that’s got your back.”
Cassian, who was behind me, giggled, though it was a low one. He loved the fact that I really was putting his family members in their place.
Now, thanks to Cassian, Nathalia had to go with Plan B. At first, everyone thought it was just a coincidence, but Cassian was ready to make sure I win. He stayed right behind me, guiding my hands.
In no time, I started to win. It was a surprise to them all because they felt I wouldn’t want to listen to Cassian because I was so stubborn. The three of them kept losing round after round, and I literally was just getting started.
“Cassian, that’s fucking cheating! Spectators can’t talk! You’re out of line!” Claire grumbled, looking so angry and displeased.
Cassian just just shrugged.
“Gemma, why are you so serious about playing cards? We just won a few times, and now you’re letting Cassian help you. You’re worrying over a few thousand dollars. As Mrs. Blackwell, that’s pretty stingy.”
“Claire!” Cassian’s voice wasn’t loud, but his tone instantly made Claire shut up.

“Cassian, what’s up with you lately? Why are you always helping Gemma?”
It was like she was saying I had cast a spell on Cassian.
“Gemma and I are married, so why shouldn’t I help her?” Cassian glanced at the other three. No one dared to speak.
“Gemma is my wife, and this is her home. If the three of you are going to act like this, don’t bother coming back.”
Claire’s hand shook as she dealt the cards again. She was stunned but didn’t dare argue. Instead, she stole glances at Cassian, wondering why he was suddenly standing up
for me.
Cassian’s been acting strange lately. If he liked me, why was he so cold before? Did he just fall for me overnight? Or has he been in love with me all along and only now realized it?
“Lunch is ready, Mr. and Mrs. Blackwell,” the servants said e as they set lunch on the table.
The game was finally over, I rubbed my aching back. I realis hated playing cards–it was boring, confusing, and worst of all, I always lost money, but not this time.
During dinner, Claire glanced at me from across the table.I could practically see the idea forming in her head.
She waited until I stood up to grab something before speaking.

“Hey, could you get me a plate while you’re at it?” she said, all sweet and casual.
I knew exactly what she was doing–trying to boss me around.
I met her gaze and said calmly, “There are servants for that.”
Claire grinned, clearly enjoying herself. “I’m asking because you’re already headed that way. If you don’t want to help, I’ll just get a servant to do it.”
Sibille, still munching on her food, spoke up with a shrug. “Claire just wants you to grab a plate for her. Why are you annoyed?”
I didn’t say anything more. I simply walked into the kitchen. As I stepped back out, i noticed Claire had her leg sticking out from beneath the table, clearly hoping i’d trip and falll.
It wasn’t hard to see through her plan. .After everything the Blackwell family had put me through these past three years, I knew exactly what she was trying to do. She wanted to watch m fall flat on my face in front of everyone.
I slid quietly behind her. “Your legs should be under the table, I said with smirk. “You should maintain a graceful posture while eating. I’m surprised, Claire. I thought you were raised with these rules. Have you forgotten them while you were away at school, or did you never actually bother to learn them?”

Claire never expected I’d call her out in front of everyone. Her face turned red with frustration as she quickly pulled her leg back under the table, trying to hide her embarrassment.
Nathalia’s plan to get Cassian to help Claire find a job had failed. So, Nathalia and the others left after lunch.
The maid cleared the table. I was lounging on the couch, finally having some peace when Cassian walked over. I pulled out the gift box and handed it to him.
“Here, take it back.”
Cassian shot me a glance but remained silent.
I took a deep breath and chose not to look at him. “I didn’t know that gift was for Reyna. Claire was trying to provoke me, so I just said it was for me. I’m sorry. I never meant to take Reyna’s stuff.”
I placed the box on the table and slid it over to him.
“Who said this necklace is for Reyna?”
“I just assumed. Is it not?” I asked. If it’s not for Reyna, then it’s for someone else, i thought. Cassian would never get something like this for me.
“Whoever it’s for”

“Gemma, the necklace is for you.”
