Chapter 9
Over time, I stopped hearing any news about Duncan.
After getting married, I returned to the hospital and resumed my work as the director.
On a rainy day, I came out of the boxing gym.
As I walked past a mall, I saw Angela, someone I hadn’t seen in a long time.
A commotion caught my attention.
I saw her being tightly grabbed by security guards, her hand still clutching a dazzling diamond necklace, her face full of panic and embarrassment.
People nearby were giving her contemptuous looks. The woman tried to struggle, but the security guards held her even tighter.
I recognized her at a glance, even though she now looked disheveled and disfigured.
I heard people say she had developed a sex addiction.
She liked to go to bars and hire male escorts.
Since she had no money, she had to steal things to make a living.
A mocking smile appeared at the corner of my mouth.
Once, she wanted to destroy me.
Now, I would pay her back a hundredfold!
I strode forward.
“Well, well, isn’t this the pure and kind saintess? Long time no see. How did you end up doing such sneaky things?”
My voice wasn’t too loud or too soft, but it was enough for everyone around to hear clearly. Whispers arose from the crowd.
“Wow, I never thought this person used to be a saintess!”

“That’s nonsense. How could a ‘saint‘ steal anything? I mean, look how ugly she is–she’s more like an ugly witch….”

The girl’s face turned bright red as she covered the scars on her face with her hands.
“I’m not ugly, I’m not ugly…”
She mumbled.
“Valerie, stop talking nonsense. I didn’t steal anything!
“Don’t slander me.‘
I didn’t give her any chance to explain and continued with cold sarcasm.
“Still won’t admit it after being caught? You just wanted to steal this necklace to sell it for money, right? I never thought you’d become so poor that you’d throw away all your dignity.
“How about this–bark like a dog a few times and bow a few times, and I’ll help you pay for this necklace.”
Her eyes shifted, showing a hint of hesitation.
“What you’re saying, is it true?
“Don’t lie to me!”
I smiled and nodded.
The next second, she started barking like a dog.
I burst into laughter.
“What an obedient fool!”
A sense of satisfaction rose in my heart.
I continued laughing and turned to the security guard.
“You can take it from here. Don’t go easy on her.”
The security guard nodded in agreement. When the girl was dragged away, her steps were unsteady, her face full of anger.
“You actually lied to me!

“I’m going to kill you!
“Duncan won’t let you get away with this…”
I laughed.
“Him? He can barely save himself.”
Someone said the Hernandez family had gone bankrupt. Unable to pay their debts, Duncan’s father jumped into a river.
And facing millions in debt, Duncan couldn’t go on living either.
He hanged himself at home.
But the story between Zachary and me was just beginning.
We did many things we had promised as children–bungee jumping and skydiving together, chasing sunsets and watching sunrises together.
When dusk fell, we cuddled on the couch watching movies.
I yawned and snuggled deeper into his arms.
“I’m tired, Zachary.”
Zachary looked down and planted a gentle kiss on the top of my head.
“Then… let’s go to bed.”
From now on, we would live peacefully and never be separated again.
