I didn’t look back or slow down.

We were done the day Dewayne and I signed the marriage papers.

The wedding was big and dragged on till evening.

Sebastian tried to stir up trouble a few more times, but Dewayne’s men kept him firmly at bay, not even allowing him to set foot near the doorway.

Dewayne came out of the bathroom, towel-drying his hair.

When he saw me, he went all shy, eyes everywhere but me, ears turning red.

I couldn’t help giggling. The guy who usually acted like such a player actually had this sweet side.

I decided right then to have a little fun with him.

“Hey, Dewayne, nice abs.”

His ears flushed an even deeper shade of red. He stuck his chest out.

“W-Well, obviously. I’ve got one of the best bodies around.”

He yanked his towel up, grabbed a blanket, and flopped on the couch.

Noticing my puzzled look, he cleared his throat. “Look, this is just a business marriage. We’re not that far along, so keep your hands to yourself.

“Get some sleep. It has been a long day.”

I let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding. Whatever he meant, I wasn’t ready to sleep next to him, and now I didn’t have to fish for an excuse.

The next morning, I was up early.

Dewayne was already downstairs, waving me over with a grin.

“Babe, come catch the gossip.”

Dewayne flicked a look at the two bodyguards standing there.

“Yesterday, Mr. Frederick was scared Sebastian would crash the party, so he had us keep an eye on him all day. He

got completely drunk and caused a huge scene at your parents’ house. Mr. and Mrs. Morland told everyone about all the money they had given him over the years and all the things he had done. It made the whole crowd furious, and they all called him a heartless freeloader.

“Then Mr. Morland cut all ties and kicked him out for good. Clara had always believed he was the Morlands’ only son. When she learned he was just a foundling they had taken in, she lost it. They started screaming at each other right there on the street, then got into a full-on brawl, making a total scene.

“By now, the whole city is probably laughing their heads off about it.”

I listened to all this without feeling a thing.

Choices had prices.

After breakfast, Dewayne took me out to pick gifts for my parents.

I told him the staff could handle it, but he firmly shook his head. “No, I gotta do it myself, or it’ll look fake.”

In the mall, he wouldn’t shut up.

“Babe, will your dad like this?”

“How about this one for your mom?”

I rubbed my temples. I never knew he could talk this much.

When we finally pulled up to my parents’ gate, two people were wrestling on the front steps.

I frowned.

What the hell were Sebastian and Clara doing here?
