Mia immediately squeezed her legs together. “Of course I banged my knees! You know how crazy steep those steps at the church on Plum Hills are.” 

She wasn’t making that up. 

The church at Plum Hills was ancient, and its ninety–nine steps were practically a forty–five–degree incline. 

The stones for the steps were all local and left rough, with plenty of jagged edges. No wonder pilgrims always ended up cutting up their knees. 

So Mia’s story checked out. 

Aurelia didn’t suspect a thing and got busy tending to the wound on Mia’s other knee. 

Seeing Aurelia so focused, Mia breathed a silent sigh of relief to herself. 

At the same time, she mentally tore into that creep, cursing him out in her head. 

‘Of all the places to kiss, he just had to pick that spot. Seriously, who taught him that?‘ Mia grumbled to herself. 

‘He’s got all these tricks, and that mouth of his is just asking for trouble!‘ she thought, rolling her eyes. 

Images flashed through her mind, and her cheeks burned out of nowhere. 

‘That damn guy is an absolute beast in bed!‘ Mia thought, her heart pounding. 

The craziest time was definitely in the shower… 

Or maybe it was her Grandma’s soup working its magic. 

Either way, her legs still felt weak. 

“When you shower later, wrap your knees in plastic wrap so they don’t get wet,” Aurelia reminded her after finishing up the bandaging. She looked up and noticed Mia’s cheeks were flushed. 

Aurelia asked, puzzled, “Why are you blushing?” 

Mia shot back without missing a beat, “Guess I’m into you.” 

Luckily, Aurelia was used to Mia’s crazy talk and didn’t think much of it. She just reminded her, “Just make sure your wounds don’t get wet.” 

“Wanna sleep together tonight?” Mia teased, giving Aurelia a playful look. 

“Nope, not happening,” Aurelia shot back without missing a beat. 

Mia clutched her chest like her heart was shattered. “Wow, cold as ice, Aurelia!” 

Aurelia’s answer? She just shut the bedroom door right in Mia’s face. 

Once Aurelia was out of sight, Mia let out long, relieved breath. 

‘I managed to pull it off. She didn’t suspect a thing, Mia thought. 

Even though it was the weekend, Aurelia was up bright and early.

She was taking Ella in for her routine six–month follow–up after surgery.

Mia had promised she’d go with her, but when Aurelia knocked on her door that morning, she got nothing but silence. 

She figured Mia was probably just too wiped out from the past couple of days and couldn’t get up. 

So Aurelia didn’t bother waking her. She just drove over to pick up Ella and headed straight to the hospital. 

Ella joked, “Seriously, I could’ve gone to the checkup on my own. You finally get a break, you should be catching up on sleep at home. You’ve gotten so skinny from running around lately!” 

“I’m fine, really,” Aurelia said. 

Even if she was tired, it was the good kind, the kind that made her happy. 

Ella had been watching Aurelia closely, trying to gauge how she was really doing. 

Seeing that Aurelia was genuinely enjoying all the hustle and bustle, Ella finally relaxed. 

She’d been worried sick that Aurelia might never be able to move on. 

That was why she’d been trying to set Aurelia up on blind dates. 

After all, some people just needed time to heal, while others needed a new love to help them move on. 

And for some people, getting over it just means finding someone new. 

Of course, when Ella later found out how unreliable that blind date guy was, she was so pissed she chewed out the matchmaker. 

Even if Ella didn’t say it out loud, Aurelia knew exactly what she was worried about. 

“I’m busy these days, but honestly, it’s actually pretty satisfying,” Aurelia said. 

“And not every loss is really a loss,” she added. 

Hearing that, Ella finally relaxed. 

Once they got to the hospital, Aurelia helped Ella find a seat, then went off to handle the check–in. 

Since there were a lot of tests scheduled, Ella would have to be admitted to the hospital for the checkup. 

Just as Aurelia finished registration, a nurse came over. “Ms. Corin, Mr. Locke has arranged a VIP suite for you. You can take Ms. Corin straight upstairs to check in. No need to wait in line here.” 

Aurelia stiffened for a moment, 

“Mr. Locke?” she echoed, surprised. 

The nurse smiled at her. “Yes, Mr. Benjamin Locke.” 

Aurelia instantly relaxed. “Thank you.” 

For a split second, a clear image of a certain face popped into her mind. 

The feeling made Aurelia uncomfortable. 

But she quickly brushed off that weird thought and walked over to Ella with a light step.

When Ella found out Benjamin had set up the room, she told Aurelia she should thank him face–to–face. 

It was just polite. 

Before she left, Ella asked, “You broke up with Cassian, but you’re still in touch with Benjamin. Don’t you worry people will gossip?” 

Aurelia shot back, “Gossip about what? That I can’t move on? Or that I’m acting like I’m done with Cassian but still hanging on after the breakup?” 

Aurelia didn’t bother to answer directly. 

“If he’s friendly with everyone, does that mean I have to keep my distance from everyone too?” she said. “Why would I?” 

Just as Aurelia finished speaking, Benjamin’s voice rang out from the doorway. 

“Couldn’t have said it better myself,” he said. 

Aurelia and Ella both turned to look at the door. 

Abigail was wheeling Benjamin in, and both of them were smiling. 

Benjamin looked at Aurelia with open admiration. “Everyone is their own person in this world. It’s important to set boundaries and not get tangled up in other people’s business.” 

Benjamin shrugged, “He and I are different.” 

Aurelia stood up. “Mr. Locke, what are you doing here? Are you not feeling well?” 

“Just a routine checkup,” Benjamin replied. 

Abigail explained, “I was just downstairs picking up the test results and saw you in line, so I mentioned it to Mr. Locke.” 

So Benjamin went ahead and set up an exclusive room for Ella, just like that. 

Benjamin added, “I’ve already spoken to the hospital. The service here is top–notch, so you can focus on your work and not have to worry about a thing.” 

“Thank you, Benjamin,” Aurelia said. 

Ella added, “Hope it wasn’t too much trouble for you.” 

As Aurelia walked Benjamin back to his room, he brought up InquireMind’s upcoming IPO.

When Aurelia came back to take Ella for her checkup, she was drawn to the commotion over by the nurse station.

Alina was in the middle of a heated argument with one of the nurses. 

“What do you mean there are no rooms? Every time my daughter was admitted here before, there were always rooms available!” Alina was fuming.

Alina let out a cold laugh. “You really don’t know who you’re dealing with, do you? Hope you’re ready to answer for what you just said.” 

With that, she whipped out her phone and called Tessa. 

“Tessa, I’m at the hospital right now, and the nurse won’t let me into the VIP suite. Get Cassian and come over here,” Alina said, her voice sharp with annoyance. 

Cassian and Tessa were there in a flash. 

Aurelia hadn’t even gotten Ella to the lab for her bloodwork yet. 

Not even ten minutes had passed since Alina made the call. 

She could tell Cassian was seriously invested in anything that had to do with his future mother–in–law. 

The perks of a VIP suite weren’t just about the all–inclusive service. Even the design felt exclusive compared to a regular hospital room. 

The corridors were spacious and open. 

A private nurse personally escorted Aurelia and Ella to the lab for her checkup, and they had to pass right by the nurse station on their way. 

Tessa and her mom, Alina, caught sight of Aurelia as soon as she came into view. 

Both of them shot her a frosty look, their gazes lingering before they each scoffed under their breath. 

As Aurelia walked past, Alina deliberately raised her voice, “Sorry to trouble you, Cassian. You’re always so busy, but you still dropped everything just to help me out.” 

Cassian just nodded politely, “Of course.”
